What does the 401 mean in the title? 401 is Rhode Island's (USA) area code

401 is a gaming store in downtown Toronto. Wu,
I've got a deck I'll be bringing that you will love to play against. Just make sure you put aside a few hours.

Never will I attend that venue again until the TOs start taking their T1 tournaments seriously. I'm not driving to Toronto and paying for parking when the tournament is not properly advertised and gets no support. It's almost as if they don't care if anyone shows up or not, and if that's the case, there's no reason why anyone should.

i guess montreal and waterbury are where we need to go to play Smile. sanctioned play i useless now.

Untouchables always has excellent sanctioned tourneys. The prize support is excellent, it is well advertised, and well organized. We had 17 players last time, and about 10 notable players from the area didn't even show up. That venue has the potential to support a 35 man tourney.

Last time, first prize was $150, for a 17-man tourney. I'm sorry, but it doesn't get any better than that.

it gets much better, most people who play at untouchables are those who never play type1, its not a very competative metagame. there are good players dont get me wrong, but larger venues such as montreal have 40-60 people consistantly. i like large tourneys, its the way they should be.

Well obviously there are better tournaments, I don't understand your point. From a feasibility standpoint, Untouchables provides the best t1 tournaments for those in and around the GTA. Not everyone can drive to Montreal to play magic.

Furthermore, the prize:participants ratio is far better at Untouchables than in Montreal. For a 40+ player tourney in Montreal you get $150 for 1st and pretty much shit for the rest of the T8. At Untouchables, with 17 players they gave away the same prize for 1st.

If a 17 man tourney gives $150 in support, I think I need to move there. (Even if that is in funny Canadian money. Very Happy )

I had a seventeen man Hadley that gave a mox and a blue dual for support.

My prizes don't change no matter how much money I lose.  Shazam!

Rich, my point is that untouchables is basically landstill, sui, fish, maybe dragon, and scrubby extended decks t1-efied. its far from a competative metagame.

I would love if someone ran a tourney like Wayne's DG tourneys every month, those who ran it would make their money back and more easily. i dont care about prize support as much as i care about a solid T1 tourny. If people care as much as those in the NE US did about type1 we would be so set, but here stores couldn't care less about type1.

i wont be there this weekend because of waterbury, but i do enjoy untouchables, its the last resort for T1 in the GTA.

You can only *build* a competitive metagame if players start supporting the venue. At the last 17 player tourney, we had Landstill, Slavery, Dragon, Keeper, UG Fish, random control, mask-naught, and the usual scrubby decks. That's pretty diverse for a small tourney, so I don't see what anyone could possibly be complaining about. Where *else* are you going to go and play T1 in Toronto? If your answer is that you would rather not show up, then good luck contributing to the growth of T1 in the GTA.

There's no reason to complain. We have an excellent venue with excellent prize support. There's no reason not to show up.

excellent prize support would be power tourneys to me. i do try and show to untouchables, but when i show to 401 with noone there and crap like that it just makes me wonder why i drive the 45min.

i would go this weekend, but there is a "non sanctioned" T1 power tourney in the US which i want to play in. good prized make driving worth it to me.

what it comes down to is "is the GTA T1 scene healthy?" the answer is NO and we need to find ways to improve it, not try and justify what we have now.

Well can you agree that a $150 prize for 1st place in a 17 man tourney qualifies as "excellent prize support" ?

That's your prerogative. The reason venues in Toronto can't afford to have these kinds of prizes is because there is generally a poor showing.

Well, supporting the venues would be a start, wouldn't it? Not every city can boast tourneys with 100+ participants. I'm sure Untouchables would provide the better prizes if more people started showing up.

one of the reasons people dont show up in droves is because of the paradox that in type1 you need full power to compete. proxies are a great way to fix this, but we need to take it seriously, sanctioned play isnt important as long as those who run the tourney enforce at the same level as sanctioned.

This conversation is quite stale. Leon at Haitry Ts has been offering power for prizes commensurate with entry fees. He awrds points and you can cash in by choosing from his binder. Reanimator, Specialk and others have been taking advantage of it because a lot of the good players just do not show up. So the workshops and Bazaars become theirs. All for pretty low entry fees.
