First, I'd like to state that The Mana Drain is the sole reason for me returning to magic recently. I love the site and think it is extremely well run. However, I hate the fact that I'm limited to where I can post. I know that you can't allow everyone to start topics as the amount of shit allowed into every forum would increase. I was wondering if it is possible to allow people to reply anywhere. I see this as a much better way for people to get introduced. Why start a threat on Hulk, for example, in the Open Forum? There are plenty of topics in the closed forums and you're a lot less likely to get decent responses too.

This has been a problem in the past, and today it annoyed me again. I saw Zherbus's Tourney announcement in the Tourney Forum. Now it seems that the tourney might be cancelled. I know I can PM him, but I would of liked to post saying not only had I planned on going, but I would most likely attend every tourney after that as well. I'm from the Boston area and that is a convinient drive for me. Things like this seem to come up a lot for me.

Now that my ranting is done, is there anyway we could impliment this?

It was done before but we had to restrict access to keep the quality level up and the signal to noise ratio high.

I have to agree that sometimes it is unfair that we can't post replies in the tourny forum.

That tends to fill up tournament announcement threads with garbage posts.

I totally see where you guys are coming from with not being allowed to post in certain places due to garbage.  That makes complete sense but also take into consideration that you can post there.  Overall it makes sense and there are still a bunch of crap post/replies in the other forums.

No, like seriously this was a huge problem on the old boards.  It practically killed the tournament forum because of the huge amount of crap posts making it hard to find any of the useful information in there before we restricted access.  And there were way, way fewer people back then.

I came in right after you restricted things on the old boards, and I remember seeing some posts that were almost impossible to comprehend.

There is just no way that tourney threads would be readable with infinite numbers of "I'll be going" "I won't be going" posts. Besides, who needs to know what the public attendance is looking like except the TO? If you PM them and enough other people do, they can post a number of confirmed attendees to draw others. I don't see any gain to letting people post chaff.

We're talking about announcements here right?
IMO there's nothing wrong with a little trashtalk/attendence talk in announcement. I creates a nice tension for the actual tournament and should not be bothering anyone.

The major part of the people reading the announcements will be going there, or still have to decide on going there or not. Even a little trashtalk can provide them with information they needed to decide whether to go or not. I don't think anyone really should be bothered by these posts, since the most important information will still be at the top of the page, in the first post, and this can always be edited if more information shows up later.

---

I'm not saying that the tournament forum should be open to anyone, I'm just disagreeing with the above people that "I might make it", "Oh Cool, Finally I get my revenge" post do not belong in the tournament forum.

Type 1 is a lot about fun, and for me, and probably for other people too, a little trastalk increases the amount of fun a tournament has provided/will provide.

----

More on the subject.

I don't think it's a bad idea at all, however I have never been moderater on this site, and I can thus not say anything about the work involved. But if it would be feasible to open some of the forums for replies this would mean there would be a lot less of thiese kind of "mirror" post in the public forums.

These "mirror" post IMO are more trashing up the site than it was before when more forums where open for everyone. The type 1 forum loses most part of it's function because all topic posted there are being discussed in the open forums where more people have acces too.

The only real "advantage" of the Type 1 forum is that topic don't leave the page if there hasn't been a reply for a day.

That stuff is basically impossible to moderate, so the only way to keep it from escalating is to keep people out of that forum.

Maybe a basic user tourney forum could be created, yet stricly monitored for crap posts.  This would be kept in check by the recent decrease in toleration of stupid posts.

If you want to post a report, you can post in one of the open forums and if you want to post about an upcoming tourney, you can use this forum.
