I'm sure its obvious to everyone that the popularity of Type 1 has been increasing rapidly over the past 2 years, but with this increase in popularity comes an increase of card prices. 2 Years ago I could easily buy a piece of power for $100 maybe a little more. Now its hard to find one for anything other than $200. The same increase has been seen with something a bit more necessary for decks: Dual Lands. Dual lands are necessary for any type one deck that wants to win. This is a given. The prices for dual lands is on the rise, and will most likely continue if more people start to play Type 1. Again 2 years ago duals could be bought $40 for 4 no its around $60. Now right now this price isn't totally unreachable, but if it continues to rise what will it eventually hit? $100? Thats a bit much for somebody just getting into magic to pay. The problem is that there are no new Type 1 cards coming into the market, but there are always new players. Will the new players just have to settle for crappy decks? Will Type 1 become an elitist group of players with money? One things for sure, Type 1 will no longer be available to any and all.

The reason I write this is to see if anybody else reflects these fears and if anybody can forsee a solution.

While the entry cost to Type 1 can be quite prohibitive, it balances out against the other formats over time when you realize that the cards do not rotate out, and there are only a handful of cards from each set that you need get playsets of.  For example, if someone is a diligent Standard player, they spend large sums each year to get the staple cards of the format.  Many of these cards (ex Akroma's Vengeance) simply will not retain their value when they rotate out Standard.

This is more or less why there are proxy tournies...

If things get really bad, the only sanctioned tourney every year will be GenCon. Maybe even the Europeans will get on the bandwagon.

Bring on the proxies. :)

Even if (blue) duals get up to $100 for a playset, that's not a hugely unresonable price--especially since it's so unlikely to go down. You can just keep playing with them forever, or sell them eventually for what'll almost certainly be more than what you paid for them.

Plus, there's still plenty of duals out there in the hands of people who don't really know what they're worth.

This does make unlimited proxies look even better, though. Everyone should at least support more than 5.
