Oh, I thought this was going to be a Doom 3 thread. Yeah, this is a bit odd.

This is a lot like that company 'Re-pet' from that movie. You know, the one with that guy. I think is was a Governator flick, but I'm not sure.
Stuff like this was just waiting to happen. It's just silly that people think they'll actually get their old bet back through cloning.

For some reason, that made me think of Pet Cemetary. Like what if you clone your dead cat/dog and it's all evil and tries to kill you?

Ric Flair Rule of Thumb #441: Never spend more on a pet than it costs to replace it. Since cats and dogs can be had at the pound for free, aside from food costs there is no reason to do anything else.

Ric,
Your idea makes sense in theory, but in practice isn't as easy to execute. I don't know about the rest of you, but I've become bonded to a pet, to the point where giving up on that pet would be terrible.
My little sister has a bright blue parakeet named Scoopy. He's around seven years old, and he's become a dear member of the family. We bought him for around $15. A year ago, Scoopy got very sick, and we spent around $1000 to get him back to health.
Could we have purchased another bird for far, far less? Of course. But, we could not have purchased another Scoopy for any price. Abandoning him would have been akin to abandoning a member of the family.
But maybe that's just us.

I am an avowed anti-pet person. It is something that is very easy to be if you are thinking rationally, but maybe there is some subtle nuance out there that I miss. Note that this is saying that it is both irrational to value pets and that that may be a good thing.
I just don't know...pets are very often just targets or recipients of our displaced emotions. They really don't know or care about the world, they just like being fed, sleeping, and pooping, that is it. For the vast, vast majority of pets they are only slightly more than inanimate objects that we anthropomorphize. There are exceptions, like Koko, that gorilla, but if we were honest about it, all almost pets are not that smart. Fido and Aibo are not that different really. It is only OUR reading meaning into their lives that makes them important to us. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing...it is just something I personally cannot understand.

Pets develop personalities, no matter how basic. It's the same as a two year old, which is another being that doesn't show a whole lot of intelligence and that we foist emotions onto. My cat is a little demon cat, but behaves exactly like a child would, with fascinating curiosity.
There's something people like about having a living creature that they can show love towards and never makes them feel bad or sad or has them sleep on the couch. I guess you've had to own a pet to understand it fully.

Scoopy has a personality, to be sure. We can look at him and tell if he's happy, angry, confused, or anything else. He darts around the house, talking to mirrors, landing on shoulders, and chewing up paper. Then he says, "Scoopy's a good boy." We're all pretty attatched to him.
