Boy, do I love playing against slaver, or should I say, "Boy, do I love playing against slaver."? In Newington, at Andy Stocks Tournament, <Cough>

I made the deck decision by playing WTF with my buddy, Tariq.

What The F***, it's not worse then Fish

Hitmen:
4 Cloud Of Faeries
4 Spiketail Hatchling
4 Grim Lavamancer
2 River Boa -MVP, single handedly beating dragon with this
1 Mox Monkey (I like to eat lots of Jewelery)

Stall:
4 Standstill
4 Curiosity

Broken:
1 Ancestrall Recall
1 Timewalk
2 Fire/Ice  (Save my butt lots of times)
2 Crucible of Worlds

Disruption:
4 Force of Will
1 Misdirection
1 Daze
2 Null Rod

Mana Sources/Base:
4 Volcanic Island
3 Tropical Island
1 Island
2 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
4 Mishra's Factory
1 Library of Alexandria
4 Wasteland
1 Stripmine
1 Mox Sapphire

Sideboard:
3 Artifact Mutation-- GOD
3 R.E.B
2 B.E.B.
2 Fire/Ice
2 Energy Flux
1 Rack and Ruin
2 Maze Of Ith

First Match: I played against GAT, it was the New GAT at Virginia with Night's Whisper and Mana Drain, the good version, although he landed one dryad because first turn Mancer, EATS little Dryads ALIVE!!! and Boa kept doing what he is good at, chumping away but once I got a Standstill, it was done.

Board:- 4 Curiosity                   +  3 R.E.B.
           -1 Daze                         + 2 Maze Of Ith

Game Two: R.E.B.ing a Recall is always a good, Je ne sais quoi? into a Cloud, Standstill, beats and got advantage and kept it all game.

Second Match: My first Slaver match-up. Boy oh boy, Why is Null Rod God, and why was Fire/Ice created?  I'll tell you why, just to beat a little deck called Slaver. Beats and burning welders led to a victory.

Board: 4 Curiosity                     +3 Artifact Mutation
          -4 Spiketail Hatchling       + 2 B.E.B.
          -1 Daze                          + 2 R.E.B.
          -1Crucible                       + 1 Fire/Ice
                                                + 2 Energy Flux
Game Two:
My opponent went, first turn, land, Welder, which of course, is a Force target and then he decides to go Lotus, Suq-Ata Firewalker, damn that card. I dropped an Energy Flux, which happened to kill an Angel, because he forgot to pay the upkeep cost, which, didn't matter, but, since it was a Tour, I had to do it. Although my stuggle, winning that game was futile, even those became short because of Boa, it wasn't enough to pull it out.

Game Three:
Since I decided not scoop game two, this game went to a tie, even though I had the upperhand due to a Null Rod, Who plays those bad cards? the only thing he landed was a Pentavus, and if I had one more turn, he would of died.

Now being 2-0-1 I thought I had a good chance of making top 8 if i won the next two matches of a 5 round Tornament.

Third Match: Not sure what this deck was called but it was pretty old school with Serindib Efreet, Bolts, Mox Monkeys, and other good Jank

First game:
he went pretty broken dropping a quick Efreet and monkeys burning away my chumps must have been a 5th or 6th turn win with both of us playing quick turns.

Board:
             -2 null rod       +2 B.E.B
             -2 Crucible      +3 R.E.B
             -4 Curiousity   +2 Fire/Ice
                                   +2 Maze of Ith

Game 2:
Firing his early threats then countering the times he tried to burn mine then R.E.Bing his Efreet lead to a win.

Game 3:
I droped a first turn Standstill not a normal thing to do but none the less effective making him break it gave me the upper hand which is a bad thing to do when play aganist Gay/r  or WTF
the upper hand was mine the rest of the game me letting a grim be burned while holding a seconed in hand let to another win.

My record stood at a strong 3-0-1 Still thinking there was only 5 rounds of play

              Forth Match Yet another Slaver
Game One: He dropped a Colossus with Tinkerand I was screwed, so I scooped

Board: 4 Curiosity                     +3 Artifact Mutation
          -4 Spiketail Hatchling       + 2 B.E.B.
          -1 Daze                          + 2 R.E.B.
          -1Crucible                       + 1 Fire/Ice
                                                + 2 Energy Flux
Game Two:
He was attacking with a third turn Platinum Angel then a Blood Moon hit and I was screwed.

Fifth Match
Once again another slaver match up this is my 3rd slaver my 4th welder match up not like im complaining or anything but wheres all the 4cc or mirror match ups.

Game 1:
I do the fish thing burning Welders with a first turn grim dropping cloud then spike into a third turn standstill. He broke it drawing into 2 Fire/Ice and i decide to waste 1 to burn much like landstill would. No real threats were dropped that my deck couldn't handle at least this game.

Board: 4 Curiosity                     +3 Artifact Mutation
          -4 Spiketail Hatchling       +2 B.E.B.
          -1 Daze                          +2 R.E.B.
          -2Crucible                       +1 Fire/Ice
                                                +2 Maze of Ith

Taking out Crucibles hurt but im not giving them the chance of welding it in for null rod.

Game 2:
2 turn he goes tinker while im holding a Force + Pitchable , Mutation and Time Walk in hand. I allow it to reslove to my dissmay he drops a 11/11 Trample beatstick called Darksteel Colossus on me. Right then i thought i lost but he passed allowing to time walk then drawing into Fire/Ice. I let him go mutating it on his turn taking 11 damage. i swung with all my weenies then on his upkeep Iceing Colossus then swinging for 11. I was Amazed at this we shook hands and he complemented me on my good play.

1 match to go with a record of 3-1-1 My Oppent had 9 points and it was immpossible for him to make it in but we played it out for respect for the other players

          Sixth Match
Read any other slaver match up won both games were completly 1 sided beating him very quickly.

I luckily squeezed my way into top 8 making 8th place.

                                       Top 8

Match One:Dragon-At least it wasn't slaver, but I wish it was.
                                          Quarter-Finals

Game One:

First game he combo'ed out third turn with back-up, nothing else to say about that.

Board:  - 4 Curioisty                      +2 R.E.B.
                                                    +2 Fire/Ice, saved my ass

Game Two:
First turn I went Lavamancer. He intuition for Sliver Queen, Xantid and Dragon, I gave him the Dragon, I do have some experience playing with Dragon because I used to play it myself. so I know how to beat it, so I gave him the Dragon. Then I dropped a Sapphire, Cloud and dropped a Standstill and passed. He broke it by playing Duress, broke Standstill, then I recalled myself and he took Force, not noticing the R.E.B. in hand  and then he Animate Dead'ed Sliver Queen. He passed and I attempted to R.E.B. his Siliver Queen but it met his Force. Then I dropped a Crucible and passed, praying that he didn't have an Animtae spell in hand or a lucky topdeck. He played a Bazzar, drew and pitched a Dragon, Squee, Fetchland then passsed. I Wasted his Bazzar and dropped a Boa with a Tropical open, just in case.  At the end of my turn he made 2 Slivers. He then Attacked and I chumped with my Boa, that green saved me. This went on for a while, me dropping a Factory and a Spiketail and Standstill. He broke Standstill with an Animate spell which was countered, while I fired his tokens. He was down to three tokens producing one per turn from me Wasting his land. Also, his live total was at 7, from Steady beats from a Spiketail. I then dropped a Grim, then next turn, I attacked for 4 . I had to Sacrifice my Spiketail to Counter a Spell. He swung, I blocked, with Lavamancer burning a token. Then, he scooped. I was lucky that game because I forgot to board in B.E.B.'s

Board: - 1 Daze                                                      +2 B.E.B.
            -1 Fire/Ice

Game Three:
He drew no Animate Spells, and with steady beats, and a nothing like a Standstill to Seal The Deal.

Match Two:    Semi-Finals
Game One:
As broken as my WTF build can get, it got ugly for the guy playing BBS, with Belcher as his kill.

Board: -1 Crucible                               +3 R.E.B.'s, such a sweet card.
           - 4 Spiketail                             + 3 Artifact Mutation
           -1 Daze

Game Two:
I kept a slow hand, he kept, he countered my early me early threats, and dropped Back to Basics, which raped my land, and since I only ran one island, it didn't do me any good, plus, he stripped it but it was game for me. And a bonus, he dropped a propaganda on me so, I was out of luck.

Game Three:
First turn Lavamancer landed. Then, second turn, land, Faeries, Null Rod with Force  Backup. He dropped another land and he got land screwed so, I was lucky to make it this far.

I felt Lady Luck helping me out, so, the guy's friend, that was running a variant of Mean Deck Titan, and he offered me, $150 and the ruby, for the Lotus, which I was going to take, but, he decided not to so, we played it out.

Match Three:             FINALS!
Game One:
He won the roll and went first. He went BROKEN first turn on me, he went Lotus, land, Sol Ring. He then went, Intuiton, for three A.K.'s, I gave him one and A.K'ed for three, then went Time Walk. Then next turn, he went Mana Vault, A.K. for four, then thirsted and pitched a Library of Alexandria and a Mana Drain, then dropped a Mana Crypt and Tinkered for Titan, he passed to me and I dropped a Grim but he forced it and I scooped.

My friend was watching him board and he boarded in 4 Fire/Ice, 3  R.E.B's, and my friend was very surprised because he didn't side in Blood Moons which would of eaten my land ALIVE!

Board:  4 Curiosity                     +3 Artifact Mutation
          -2 Spiketail Hatchling       + 2 B.E.B.
          -1 Daze                          + 2 R.E.B.
          -2 Crucible                      + 2 Fire/Ice

Game Two:
I have no idea how I won this game but, he was drawing massive cards and he had me in a slaver lock for three turns which slowed my offensive,
and I had a Cloud in play, he made me cast a Standstill, and he R.E.B.'ed the Standstill which was the worst thing he could of done he should of killed my Cloud. He drew a Titan and dropped it and then I casted a Boa, and I got him down to two with all the fetches he popped and slow beats I delt him. He mindslaved me and did nothing and there was nothing else he could do so, we went on to game three.

Game Three:
He went first, dropped a fetch. and said that he had an upkeep action, he fetched and Recalled himself but I Misdirected it to myself, and once I knew that happened, I knew it was game, I drew a Rack and Ruin, Artifact Mutation and a land.  Everything he played I had an answer too, I let a Welder hit and I fired it and I dropped a Boa and with steady beats and my two standstills that I dropped and massive cards that I drew, I knew, that Lady Luck was truly with me and my friend was watching him play and he said that the guy made many mistakes but the guy seemed nice and he had a pretty pimped out deck.

My friend, Tariq, and I made many many trades and we were both happy with what happened and also, our friend Ryan was playing at the PTQ, but he got screwed by a kid playing Blue/Green Control and if he didn't, he would of made it in the top 8. Hey Jon, can you top that?, the sealed box of Italian Legends is sweet, but, sorry man, Lotus is better, best of luck to you at College, keep in touch, and dave, wish you could of come too.

The END! Thanks Andy, <Cough> and everyone else for organizing the event and I hope to here from you for another tournament or any other event you might have. See everyone at Waterbury, so, good luck to everyone, and, thanks again.

Removed like, around two hundred exclamation points.

Final attendance was 54.  The only major mishap this time was that the judge (Chris Alexander) counted wrong, and I had to inform him that we were doing six rounds, not five.

This event was also much less centered on OTE buying and selling than the previous one.  Mykeatog, Leather, and a bunch of the other common sights weren't even in attendance.

That Belcher deck sounds interesting.  Was it running Mana Severance or anything or did it just try to raw dog the kill?

Congratulations!  That's alot of welders.

In hindsight, how would you have altered your maindeck/sideboard for the tourny?

yes the belcher deck was running mana severance from what he told me it was adapted to t1 from extended

in hindsight i would have took out the rack and ruin and energy flux out  for either more null rods or oxidize to be more on the mana curve

Looking back how was the 1 Daze, 2 Null Rod main? DId you ever want more? And how about the 2 Crucibles and 2 Boas? Should Boas go up?

I talked briefly with Doug before the tourny.  He said he liked the 2 boas just fine.  He said it seemed to fit as a two of.  After this tourny I hope he might realize the count should go up.  I personally love the card but there seems to be a little decline of islands lately with all the Workshop decks.  So maybe 2 is the magical number.

Congrats on the win, to bad I was playing in the PTQ.

What  About 2 Maindeck Oxidizes? Versus Workshop Aggro their a threat to take out a fattie or some of the like. Also I think 4 Trops 4 Volcs and 1 Island is good cutting the Library. I also think if you run Daze It Should be 2. I'd really like to here how the 1 Daze was. And as well as running the 2 Rods and 2 Crucibles which I think 1 might be the right number.

to me 1 is never the right number for anything that is not restricted it that means your hoping to draw that card at the exact time you want to use it which is highly improbable.

I personally hated fish for the longest time and i still do i find it a cheap way to win but with wtf. A couple of slight changes from fish in the main and the board make it so chaep it becomes funny to me i originally ran 3 boa and 1 fire/ice in the main with 2 in the board but the night before my friend convinced me to change the numbers around also boa to me is not a good early game drop boa is a finsher like from mortal combat he seals the deal and stalls while clouds, mancer, and spiketail diminsh the other players life points. 2 Crucibles was a good number i never saw 2 in a match and when i dropped it i won even against dragon which should have combo'ed before it could have taken any affect. The main deck i found 1 card that i found useful but somthing better could replace it that whould help in the more difficult match ups.

Congrats Doug,

Your a cool guy, and you deserve a win like this. Your deck was a very big step from Dragon, however. Wink I believe you took down my TNT deck with it last week, my only loss until the finals Sad . And it was all because of Artifact Mutation, which might be the best SB card right now for aggro/control decks to use.

Congrats again and a word of advice, take an extra English class your Senior year. Razz

Hopefully I'll see you around Christmas when I take a week of leave during Tech-School.

Congratulations on the win, especially with that deck. :)

I noticed that you sided out curiosity nearly every game. What was the logic behind that move?

Also, have you tested brainstorm/good creatures instead of standstill/cloud?

My logic behind curiosity is that this deck is aggro control so most of the time my thinking was out curiosity for mutation which has both factors of control and aggro

as for standstill over brainstorm i played the deck like a fish player should dropping an early standstill and giving small beats with the first turn drop or man lands then get card advantage and then controling the rest of the game

I played MD Titan, with a little of my own spice.

I got mana scrwed in everygame I played.  I was not running Black, and I was running 28 mana sources.

It just wasn't my day......

On a lighter note, congrats on the win!!
