I've got mushroom clouds in my hands

So I want to register a new domain name. I'm cross-checking magic card list and available domain names. I find a really cool one: manaleak.com. I think about it for a couple of days. I decided to reg it two minutes ago. What do I see? It's taken all of a sudden! Coincidence, you might say....

The facts.

1. I first checked the domain name in question last thursday (september 9th).
2. I checked it through http://www.domaindirect.com.
3. I just performed a WHOIS-query on the name which turned up like this:
Quote
  Domain Name: MANALEAK.COM
   Registrar: TUCOWS INC.
   Creation Date: 09-sep-2004

4. DomainDirect is a subdivision of Tucows.com.

I find it suspicious at best that a name that has been free for many, many years is now suddently registered by some random guy (Tu Nguyen) on the VERY SAME DAY I looked it up, thourgh the very same registrar service no less. Tu Nguyen. Tu. Cows. It's probably an alias they use for shady shit like this. Avoid them at all cost. Go somewhere else if you want to look for a domain name.

Fucking arseholes...

Insert random "pwn3d" picture here.

On a lighter note, that kind of sucks. I hope you find a good name.

Hey Bram,

the guy's last name is also pronounced "Win", so his name turns out to be:

TO WIN.

I think that's a bit of a coincidence too.

Dave.

Yes, according to directNIC the domain is available and can be registered.  I suggest you jump on it before some forum troll like Kerz gets it.

I know. Actually, that's why I initially checked. As a sort of joke, you know. #themanaleak....but then I decided to check the real thing and events unfolded as I mentioned above. themanaleak.com is a cute name for a running gag, but worthless in every other respect. It'll be an expensive joke, too, with DNS renewal costs and such.

So what do you think happened? It got registered, for the purpose of selling it to you? Can they possibly monitor and register everything that goes through?

The way I figure, they got a computer that looks at everything that's looked up through their service. If it meets certain requirements (english words, short enough, not registered) they wait and see if I reg it immediately and if I don't, they put it on some sort of reserve list.

The fact that I bothered to look it up, means that it may score stray hits and thus in valuable. They could have a deal with this Nguyen fellow (who owns an online card store, by the way) to sell to him every magic related name people show interest in through their service.

Or something. Either way, it's just too big of a coincidence. Anyway, I now registered: www.spellbook.nl
