Inspirsed by the talk of Risk in the T1 forum, we have this poll. Please list which risk continent you usually try to obtain during the course of the game. (Y'know, while not crushing people)

I like australia because it has only one entry point. After that I cut to the upper right and go into North America. I find that Australia is easy to defend and in many cases can sweep the world. Taking North America is a backup plan to get more resources.

I'll second David's game plan. Taking Australia and holding it for a couple of turns will provide a substential amount of soldiers, which I then use to capture North America. From then, going and holding South America is easily doable. Then storming all around the continent is simple since you should receive 12 or so units more than each opponent each turn.
<3 Europe.
I never get to attack France though since the opponent who controls it usually surrenders.

I voted S. America because it's such a great place to prevent others from owning continents. I haven't played Risk in a looong time because (like Monopoly) it takes hours to play out a game with more than two people, but when I did, SA isn't that hard to hold and especially halts African ownership. Europe and Asia are both win-more areas, IMO, so preventing ownership of NA and Africa is a big step in the midgame.
Australia is of course a very good place, too.

I never get to attack France though since the opponent who controls it usually surrenders. Damn, way to get there before anyone else does. I'll be person #3 to vote for Australia if feasible. If someone else gets Australia early, though, or if everyone else is squabbling over it, try to grab North America while they do.

South or North America. Pretty easy to defend with a good number of new troops / turn. And a good fallout to other continents (which isn't the case with Australia)

As much as I love Australia, I have this horrible luck of losing the die roll to go first. And fighting people in Australia in the beginning of the game rarely works out well unless it's like 3 on 1.
SA is intresting, some prick usually puts enough armies in one country to be annoying at first, but then it's easy to hold. I usually go with SA or flatout start in Africa. Europe and Asia are hardly threats to it unless they feel like dying a lot. (Though if Europe becomes mostly occupied, then... um... turn in a risk set and smash or your gonna die) So then it's just you locked in combat with your mortal enemy SA. xD

If I can, I always, always take Australia. Then I slowly move out of it, starting with Siam, and then India and China ASAP. And then building and building until I can further branch out.
Has anyone tried the future Risk game? It's different, but the 5 turn variant can be a lot of fun.

It depends on the people I'm playing with. I really like a challenge, so I usually go after Asia, or if I'm playing with a little bit better people I'll try to grab Europe.
Grabbing Australia is a defensive play, and most people view it as safest since its easier to defend and not get noticed, but in my opinion it's a death trap. I launch an offensive as quick as possible, and Australia just isn't the place to do that from with any degree of success.

I've never lost a game of risk.
Every time I play, I go for North America first. Why? Cause everybody fights over Aussieland. NA only has 3 entry points, and nets an additional 5 dudes every round, meaning if you set it up as a stronghold early, you can usually claim it wholly by round 3, and defend it rather easily, without many people getting down your throat cause they're already fighting over those Wily Filipinos.

Australia is definitely the best continent - IF you get dealt one of the pieces. If you don't, or if you can see that you will lose the battle for Australia, then North America is definitely the way to go. No one holds Asia and stockpiling guys on the land bridge is really stupid. Europe also is rarely held. So South America is your main enemy. North America and Australia are the most efficient strongholds, which in Risk adds up to a lot of extra pieces.
Has anyone played risk 2100? That game is really good. It is very complicated but the extra toughness (power?) of the commandos makes for some really interesting new twists on the attack/defense balance.

Australia is terrible. All you can attack from there is Asia.
North America is awesome if no one else has a clue. I won a bunch of risk games in a row by just focusing everything on getting North America. However, once people start to catch on to that strategy, and especially if there are more than ~4 players, South America is the place to be. From there, you can move into Africa or North America, depending on which is easier to take. Once you have two continents, that's just game.

It's just, Australia or South America are generally the only keepable continents when I play with the friends. Mostly because myself and one of my other friends will do whatever is needed to break up any other continent if at all possible (usually because one of us has Australia and the other has South America).

Asia and Europe are awful, and generally are in the category of 'If you take it, you've already won'. Too many entry points. Africa's slightly annoying as well, but it's not impossible to defend since if you do it forward of the borders of the continent, you break up Asia, South America, and Europe.
Personally, I'll take Australia. 2 extra guys a turn is in fact enough if you play with a max army/territory of 12.

I'm for Australia. If you take it, someone is well on their way to taking North America, and when I play with my friends, capturing NA always grabs attention, meaning that everyone is going to be dedicating serious mans to stopping you. While they kill each other, Aussie land and Africa are where I like to start.

I like to take Africa or Australia and then slowly take countries in Asia to build up cash. Nobody ever does that, banking up on random countries = inevitability. That is, if I cant take North America right away.
