Yavimaya Patriarch
{2}{G}{G}
Creature -- Elf Shaman
1/1

{T}: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.

Return a land you control to its owner's hand: Untap Yavimaya Patriarch.

***

I've made this as expensive as it is because at least for one turn, it's a one-sided Heartbeat of Spring. Even if you don't use it to its full extent by returning all of your [tapped] lands at once, it can be used to generate four mana very easily: tap a land for mana, tap this for mana, return that land to your hand to untap this, tap this for mana, replay the land and tap it for mana. I certainly think that merits the high mana cost. It might not be particularly useful as a mana accelerator then, but it would certainly still be good as a mana fixer.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

Current Wording:

Yavimaya Patriarch
{2}{G}{G}
Creature -- Elf Shaman
1/3

{T}: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.

Return a land you control to its owner's hand: Untap Yavimaya Patriarch.

The cost is high for a mana producer but you argument justifying it is sound. Could the CC be 3G in order to make it more attractive as a mana fixer?

It might be more usable at 2G but with 'return an untapped land you control to your hand' as a cost. That still makes it better than good old Druid but limits the mana acceleration part of his ability, making him a more dedicated mana fixer.

I think I prefer the 4CC version as you can get some wacky mana from him!

Boring or perfect?

(By the way, dandan, I'm still deliberating over changing his cost to {3}{G} -- maybe if I change the cost of his ability to "Return a forest you control...".)

No real problems, he seems about on a level with Explosive Vegetation in terms of fixing/acceleration, and he conveniently costs the same Very Happy. If you kept him at 2GG it might be nice to make him a 1/3 so he can also act like a pseudo-vigilant attacker/blocker when his mana isn't needed.

Well it's not boring, so it must be perfect.

I think that making it a 1/3 creature, as Nazdakka suggested, is just what was needed to perfect this card. That better justifies the double-green in his mana cost, so I think this is pretty much done. I'm going to start the 36 Hour Clock.

Here are some flavor text ideas:

In times of emergency, the Patriarchs will exhaust the land to defend it.
The oldest farmers know all the tricks.
Our duty is not to any tree, but to Yavimaya itself. -NAME, Yavimaya Patriarch

I like the last flavour text the most. I hope you don't mind if I try some variations of it.

"No single tree is hallowed, but the whole of Yavimaya is sacred."

"No tree is hallowed above the rest. For the good of Yavimaya, no sacrifice is too great."

I really like the second one:

I was just trying to provide a couple of different potential approaches. I'm glad that you liked one and decided to improve on it.
