Movie of the Year

Phantom is very meh.  The vocalists are nothing special, and the guy who plays the Phantom is particularly unimpressive.  I'd never seen The Phantom before, but was intimately familiar with the music.


Moulin Rouge succeeded due to its spectacular setting, costume design, cinematography, and absurdity.

Chicago succeeded due to its overpowering musical performances, and the overall stylization of the original stage version.  It worked because the vocalists worked, and the stage designs really fit to what the original stage production wanted.

The Phantom really failed to land either as a movie or as a musical adaptation.  Nothing was particularly amazing.

The random paces of Coffee and Cigarettes were a little offputting.  And the union of each scene wasn't all that great.  Those things aside, I really enjoyed the rest of it.  Each different set of actors were interesting in a different way.  You don't often see movies that develop >10 characters well.  Bill Murray made me like the movie.  His scene was worth anythingi the others offered that was less than spectacular.

I enjoyed Closer.  It's true that I try to like movies more than they may deserve.. but it was still good.
