Basically thinking in terms of limited on this as in a standard environment the only creatures he will be blocking are probably red.  Also, does every card have to have flavor text?

This needs some slight rewording:

Sacrifice Fanatical Bodyguard: Remove from the game target creature being blocked by Fanatical Bodyguard. That creature's controller gains life equal to its toughness.

well I guess you are right because exile is an instant and gains you life and costs the same.  I think this can safely not have the life gain clause.

You could also increase its toughness. By giving it better combat survivability, you make it more relevant that this has an oprtional ability, where Defiant Vanguard's ability is required.
