[Report] Myriad Games Vintage February 19th, 2005 w/T8 Decks

The Myriad Games Vintage Tournament announcement for February 19th, 2005 can be found here.

Thank you to everyone who attended our fourth Vintage tournament here at Myriad Games. We had 33 players and a great event!

Oliver Beaumont and Zherbus split 1st and 2nd to take home a [card]Mox Pearl[/card] and [card]Mana Drain[/card] respectively.
Domenic Minicucci and Jeff Bourbeau split a [card]Berserk[/card] and [card]Underground Sea[/card] for 3rd and 4th.
Daniel Perovich took home the Bonus Preregistration Dual Land: [card]Underground Sea[/card].
5th through 8th place each received an impressive Champions of Kamigawa playmat.
Other door prizes included Foil cards, Unhinged cards, and awesome 6-foot long Magic The Gathering Banners
(one to a random player (Ben Wells) and one to the Most Original Deck Title - "TuxShirto Sligh").

The Myriad Games T-Shirt Challenge was a big success. I played 16 games and gave away 6 Myriad Games T-Shirts. Thanks to everyone who participated. For those of you who did not win this time around, you can try again next time. For those who did win a T-Shirt, you can play next time for another bonus prize.

Were 4 Auriok Salvagers, by any chance, missing from the Digging for Treasure Build?  I only count 56 cards and Trinket Mages NEVER hang out in decks without Salvagers. (although the reverse is true).

This and the SCG Tourney lists are the wierdest I've seen in a long time.  Who says we don't innovate in T1? Die welder Die!

There's a reason Zherb did so well, most of it is skill, but the field sucking helps too.

Yeah, there was a lot of randomness there, unfortunately I didn't get any bye rounds.

Here's how it went in a nutshell:

Round1: Control Slaver

Round3: Control Slaver
Round4: Meandeck Tendrils

T4: THEN Sligh

So it took until the T4 for me to hit something relatively 'easy', but even still I think Sligh was a good call expecting a field of Slaver.

To be fair the field wasn't complete trash. There were a few tendrils decks and slaver and also whirling dirvish! The lesson that can be learned from this tournament, I believe, is that Cosmic Larva is simply unbelievable. 3 mana for a 7/6, it really is mindboggling that no one has used him before. He's from the stars!

Cosmic larva is sooooo good, it's amazing t3ch.  But seriously, this deck was a good control deck, and as long as you have a good control deck, it doesnt matter how ridiculous your win condition is (although cosmic larva is completely un-ridiculous) it just matters that you are able to prevent your opponent from doing what they need to do.  It doesnt hurt to have a good player behind the deck either.

Just added the Salvagers to "Digging for Treasure". Sorry for the temporary omission - missed that line when I was posting them. Regarding the decks played, I was glad to see a lot of fun and innovative decks. Most everyone seemed to have a great time, and to me that's the measure of a successful tournament.
