Hanging Judge
{W}
Creature -- Magistrate
1/1

{3}{W}, {T}, Discard a card: Remove target attacking creature from the game.

***

1. Yes, I realize this should be a spellshaper. I really don't like that creature type at all. It's flavour suicide, as far as I am concerned, and I refuse to have anything to do with it.

2. I also considered having this creature shape [card]Reciprocate[/card]. I wanted it to have a low mana cost, however, which a reciprocate-shaper couldn't really have in my opinion. I also felt that a one-mana-cost, repeatable removal ability -- even one that could only target creatures that damaged you -- would probably be too strong as an uncommon. I felt that [card]Chastise[/card]'s higher mana cost made it more appropriate for a shapable ability and allowed for a cheaper creature.

3. No, I am not considering giving this higher power and toughness and increasing its cost. I am desperately trying to break out of the white-creatures-cost-2-mana mold.

Afterthought: I never seem to get Chastise's ability quite right. At any rate, I think I'm going to leave this the way it is. I don't think it's strictly necessary for every spellshaper to exactly mimic an existing spell. This is slightly different from Chastise in that it removes the creature, rather than destroying it, and it doesn't gain you any life.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

This is cheaper to play, but more expensive to use. I think you could get rid of the discard cost, since it's not like the Avenger ever saw play in his day (Mageta and Rebels saw to that).

I decided to give it the reciprocate ability instead. If that ends up pushing it to rare, so be it. I can always create other spellshaper-like creatures.

As a random side note, if you want an 'en' or 'em' dash instead of two hyphens in the type line, hold down the alt key and type '0150' or '0151'. That will give you 'Creature – Magistrate' or 'Creature — Magistrate' instead of 'Creature -- Magistrate', which looks just that much better (plus, it's what they use on Gatherer).

Yup – the dash definitely looks better than the two hyphens. I believe the one I selected (alt + 0150) is the emdash. I didn't even realize there was more than one form of dash, let alone that they had different names. Thank you, Godder. I learned something today.

I'm not sure the name fits all that great.  You risk connotations of a hung jury, don't raise the proper imagery, and the name doesn't really roll off the tongue to begin with, which is a shame because a creature this cool needs something.  If you want to keep the theme, what about something with a Sheriff in it?

The idea of a hung jury didn't even cross my mind. Haven't you ever heard the term "Hanging Judge" before? It's something you hear in western movies all the time. A judge who has a tendency to hand out the stiffest possible sentence for a crime is called a "hanging judge" because if you are found guilty of a capital offense in his courtroom, you'll definitely be hanged.
