I was thinking about some casual Goblin decks one day, including the Earthcraft/Goblin Warrens combo and cards like Skirk Fire Marshal, and came up with this:

Goblin Warlord
1RW
Creature -- Goblin Soldier
2/2
Goblins you control have vigilance.

Other possible card names:

Goblin Clanwarden
Goblin Lieutenant
Goblin Zealot

Another possibility is:

Card Name
1RW
Creature -- Goblin Soldier
2/2
Creatures you control have vigilance.

That would make it a mirror to another creature I've created:

Yavimaya Trailblazer
1RG
Creature -- Nomad Elf
2/2
Creatures you control have haste.

Good, solid creature albeit underwhelming compared to the cycle of Legions creature lords and the like.

Goblin Warchief was pretty overpowered as it was. This is fine.

I actually think this is too strong. They've recently reprinted Serra's Blessing. Paying an additional {R} to give it a 2/2 body seems like too much to me. I would much rather see this ability on a fat, overcosted angel.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

Creatures are the easiest permanent type to deal with, enchantments are the hardest. Black and Red can't deal with enchantments, but they can deal with creatures (especially white 2/2 creatures) very easily. An enchantment like Ivory Mask costs 2WW, but when you give it legs (True Believer) it only costs WW. I think the casting cost on Goblin Zealot is fine relative to Serra's Blessing.

My only qualm is, why would a Goblin be granting defensive abilities?  Vigilance is decidely white, in fact almost strictly white; doing a Gatherer search for vigilance shows that 48 of 68 cards to have or grant the ability are strictly white.  Add to that the fact that Goblins are horrible on defense and the card kinda loses flavor points.

Vigilance is something acquired through discipline, something notoriously lacking in a Zealot (much less a goblin!). I think the flavor of the card is all wrong, though the power level is fine.

This could easily be a soldier or something instead, but at that point you have to ask why it's red at all.

I think red can get soldiers and other trained types. Flailing Soldier, the Prophecy guys who wanted tapped lands, Suq Ata Lancer, and so on.

Yeah the power level's dandy, it's probably what Daru Warchief should have been Sad  Still really sad about my once-favored OnBC tribe getting shafted by their warchief.
Anyway.  Red's had its fair share of Soldiers, so you can kick the moniker and the extraneous creature type and still have a solid card.

I suppose I can't really come up with a good reason for making this a Goblin except that it would be cool, if not flavourful. And it would be good with Skirk Fire Marshal to attack then tap the Goblins during combat for a finishing blow.

It's true that Goblins and blocking don't often appear in the same sentence (unless the Goblin is Mogg Maniac), and that many Goblins have the drawback "~this~ can't block".

As for the word Zealot, this is what I found at http://www.dictionary.com:

- One who is zealous, especially excessively so.
- A fanatically committed person.
- A fervent and even militant proponent of something.

So, how about this:

Card Name
1WW
Creature -- Soldier
2/2
Creatures you control have vigilance.

That's fine. There's a lot of room for soe lengthy flavor text, and I know you're good at those, so I expect a humdinger!

Are you talking to me? I'm so not good at flavour text, so you can't be talking to me.

Change made.

I don't know if this is going to be a real card or not, but this card appears in the Ravnica spoiler at http://mtgsalvation.com:

Gate Hound
2W
Creature -- Hound
1/1
Creatures you control have vigilance as long as Gate Hound is enchanted.

Eventhough this is reputed to be a common, and my card would likely be an uncommon (like the Scourge Warchiefs), I think my card looks broken/overpowered/undercosted next to this. What do you think?

(I'm considering dropping the whole card idea...)

That Ravnica card is straight up unplayably bad, so don't worry about any comparisons.

Surely that 2 shouldn't be in the CC of Gate Hound?

Maybe a Tallowisp deck broke the future league and they had to modify creatures that gained abilities when enchanted.

Your card looks fine. In fact it is possibly a touch underpowered by 1WW standards.

That makes more sense, like Fledgling Osprey.

Your card looks fine. In fact it is possibly a touch underpowered by 1WW standards.

I don't know, this is not unlike Chieftain en-Dal or possibly Pianna, Nomad Captain. Although it's probably underpowered when compared to Descendant of Kiyomaro, Knight of Dawn, or Paladin en-Vec, for example.

So, anyone have any flavour text? I want to close this thread...
