Link to SCG deck databaseA couple months ago two players ran [card]Eternal Dragon[/card] in Landstill decks. Granted Landstill is an obsolete deck but I can't help but wonder why play this card? I suppose it could be a poor decision but 10th place is a good finish for someone running a card that seems so bad. As a 5/5 flier it seems [card]Exalted Angel[/card] is a lot better. Are players using the plains cycling or return to hand abilities to produce card draw with Standstill out? Maybe it's just a vestal card with options. Thanks, -mike Edited your 12 line URL - Bram

Eternal Dragon is there to fetch lands. It does the same thing as fetchlands do. That is why it is ran. Also, they can hardcast it and beat away....I think Eternal Dragon is good, because in Landstill, you run only 4 fetchland. Eternal Dragon acts as fetchland numero 5 and 6... hope that cleared some things up for ya...

Two things: - first off, Exalted Angel is 4/5, not 5/5 as dskippy0 said, . This makes it a whole turn faster as a clock when you need to do 20 damage; - second, short of Swords to Plowshares or something like Tormod's Crypt, Eternal Dragon is a win-condition that will keep coming back turn after turn. Having said that, however, I never did like the card in Landstill, and I agree that there are better options. Yes, his landcycling ability is useful, but I don't know if it's enough reason to be running it. Luiggi

In addition to the landcycling ability, which I think is it's primary function, it is yet another excellent sink for mana drain mana. There was a landstill deck that did quite well in a recent SCG running both eternal dragon and akroma's vengence. Both cards, are not typically T1 cards, but are playable in the right deck and meta. They both cycle as well, which is a boon if you are short on card draw and heavy on mana. The last benefit to running dragon is you get to kill people with a DR4GON, and say trogdor, or just shout DR4G0N when you cast it, that's pretty cool in itself.

The other use of Eternal Dragon vs. Exalted Angel is that you can get your Dragon back after using Nevinyrral's Disk/Akroma's Vengence.

Maybe he saw a decklist and didn't have Exalted. Eternal is a beater too, plus it cycles through Standstill. I dunno.

I used to question it too until I played that list. He's what separates the deck from being U/W Fish (that and Mana Drain into Disk). His recursion is soooo wonderful, he is very versatile.

http://www.thehardlessons.com/I will break into your house while you aren't home and disguise myself as a chair. Then I will leave before you get home, but there will be a place at your table where I was a chair and you will wonder why there isn't a chair there. Then later I will leave the chair disguise on your doorstep and you will realize what has happened and you will be afraid all the time. Helter Skelter mother fuckers!

It fetches lands and beats while coming back from Nevinnyral's Disking. What more could you want for the deck?

Landstill, like all other control decks, is very mana-thirsty deck. So the Landcycling ability is AMAZING. I have been in a scenerio like this:
I just drained something HUGE...I think it something like he tried to Mindtwist my hand, even after I drew 3 from standstill and 1 from LoA. Ya that is 11 mana or something....so I ended up draining that into dragons landcycling ability. Played the land, recurred dragon and then hardcasted it. The dragon won me the game.
My point is, the dragon is just a huge thing to sink your mana into, but the difference between sinking your mana into dragon or something else is, dragon helps you out a lot, no matter what. He fetches land, returns to your hand, AND beats. Plus he never really dies, unless you swords to plowshare him.
My $ 0.02 thanks =)

I think that by now we've covered all the major reasons for having EDragon in LandStill, right? I think we can give this thread a rest...

But before we do, let's point out that the dragon in question can only be recurred during the upkeep.
