I hadn’t had a chance to play at Dreamers the whole summer, and it was fun to finally get back into the monthly tournament series. While I hadn’t hit many tournaments, I was still playing type 1 for fun with my buddies, and my Oath of Auriok deck had undergone some transformation. Seeing the success of Fish and Stax, I was realizing my prior deck was going to have a tough time with the mana and Salvager-effects denial game (strips, null rods, and chalices) So, I lowered my mana curve even more. Another interesting change was to maindeck two pyroblasts to protect casting the oaths, kill Fish creatures, and fight the Gifts decks. No deck without blue is a problem for an oath deck, so it wasn’t a difficult decision.
What I had left was what would look like on paper, a hodge-podge of Vintage cards (31 one of’s!) slammed into an Oath framework. Take away the creatures and forces, and the average casting cost is 1.52. Outside mana, it runs 4 artifacts, 15 blue, 2 red, 2 white, 6 green, and 6 black spells. And, Salvagers is no longer my primary win condition. After the tournament, my Angels and Colossus both had twice as kills as my Salvagers. Scooping had as many wins as Salvagers. Call it Oath of Auriok, Five Color Oath, Oath Salvagers…whatever…I’m calling it Oath Fried Rice. A five color oath deck that throws in a little of everything that doesn’t look like it mixes well, but ends up surpisingly good. It’s also a relatively cheap and competitive 10-proxy deck. Try it out… it’s an extremely fun deck to play, and heck, I split for 1st at this 32 person tournament. On to the report. And for fun, the kill credits are scored.

Match 1 - 5/3 Workshop Aggro with Brainstorms Game 1 – A long game that was never in my favor. I never drew an oath, and the juggernauts and trisk pounded me down. Game 2 – Turn 1 orchard-mox-oath. He scooped shortly thereafter. Game 3 – Nothing exciting happened for a while. He was a bit mana deficient but when he got to four, he started dropping juggernauts. I got an oath out, but he responded with an Eon Hub (wow!) I think I eventually balanced to clear the board, and with a hurkyl’s recall in hand, I mystical’d for Time Walk. Time was called. I was able to time walk and on his EOT, hurkyl’s recall his board. I oath’d up a Salvagers with Lotus and Furnace, and I furnaced through about 10 cards before hitting the Pyrite. Matches 1-0 Games 2-1 Scoop 1, Salvager 1
Angel/Spirit Oath with Auriok Salvagers sideboard and sexy lady proxy spirit tokens Game 1 – he mulligans down to 5. I think I tinker-Colossus for the win with counter back-up. Maindeck pyroblasts catch him off guard in this game. When I first saw his spirit tokens, which were skimpy models glued to a magic card, I immediately turned them upside down. No distractions for me. Game 2 – he mulligans, and then accidently draws 7 – forced mulligan to 5, and then has to mulligan to 4. Tinker-Colossus wins the day. Tough luck for him, but I’ll take the match win. Matches 2-0 Games 4-1 Scoop 1, Salvager 1, Colossus 2
UG Madness I'm actually playing my nephew here, and he he knows his odds are slim. Game 1 – I get out an oath, but he top decks a null rod. I first oath up Salvagers, and his Mongrel and Rootwalla are beating me down. Then, I oath up Colossus, and he swings for the win. Game 2 – Sideboarding - salvagers and toys out, Angels in. I get an early oath, and out come two angels. He has nothing to stop them and they swing for the win. Matches 3-0 Games 6-1 Scoop 1, Salvager 1, Colossus 3, Angels 1
Meandeck Gifts Game 1 – Even though I have an turn two oath hand with demonic and force-blue card, he opens with Lotus-mox-brainstorm (maybe should have countered the brainstorm) into land and probably drain, and goes ridiculous a couple turns later. Game 2 – I open with mox, mox, crypt, balance which resolves. He cries. Turns later, I follow with demonic, vampiric, yawgs…and amazingly I still can’t win because I only have 2 Salvagers in the deck and he has pithing needle in play (a second one, because I destroyed the first one) and a coffin purge in the graveyard. My big sideboarding mistake was not sideboarding in my second pyrite. Anyway, all my top tournament mistakes were fortunately confined to this one game. Despite my incompetence, I’m still setup to win on my oath upkeep, but I the realize I have three life left and a mana crypt….and yes, I roll a called “even on the six side die. Matches 3-1 Games 6-3 Scoop 1, Salvager 1, Colossus 3, Angels 1
UB Fish Interesting deck. Maybe he’ll write a report, because he top 8’d. Game 1 – He plays an early rootwater thief. I play oath. He swings and removes Colossus. I oath and the top card is Salvagers. Argh!!! He then surprisingly does not rootwater thief me, probably thinking I have a Lotus, Lion’s, and 2 Pyrites, but I only have 1 Pyrite! I oath-deck myself, Krosan Reclamation Black Lotus to the library, and combo out. Game 2 – Salvagers and toys go out, angels come in. Oath comes out early, and angels swing for the win. Not much he can do once the Angels hit to board. Matches 4-1 Games 8-3 Scoop 1, Salvager 2, Colossus 3, Angels 2
Uba Stax For those UBA players interested, this player’s streak with this deck is amazing. I think he played the last power tourney and the annual tournament of champions with this deck and has been undefeated. ID Matches 4-1-1 Games 8-3 Scoop 1, Salvager 2, Colossus 3, Angels 2
Quarterfinals - UR Fish Game 1 – lose the die roll, but get out 1st turn oath. Scoop. I was surprised he didn’t at least see what oath deck I was playing. Game 2 – Salvagers and toys go out, angels come in. Duress followed by ancestral-regrowth-ancestral, and eventually oath. The card advantage is too much for him to overcome. Angels swing in again. Matches 5-1-1 Games 10-3 Scoop 2, Salvager 2, Colossus 3, Angels 3
Semifinals - UB Fish Same guy I played round 5. Game 1 – I get a turn 2 Tinker-Colossus. He scoops…well, let’s count that as a Colossus win. Game 2 – Similar to my earlier game 2 against him…early oath, angels, and not much he can do to stop them. I learn he plays diabolic edits, but he never drew them or any of his duresses in all four games. Matches 6-1-1 Games 12-3 Scoop 2, Salvager 2, Colossus 4, Angels 4
Finals - Meandeck Oath Pretty standard meandeck oath. He won 2-1 over the UBA Stax deck. I think I had a good matchup against him, but I hate playing the token war, I’m tired, and the prize drop from 1st to 2nd is significant (1st – Time Walk, 2nd $50 store credit). We ID and split the prizes.
If people want a primer – fun with decking yourself and Krosan Reclamation, sideboarding strategies, why I don't like mana drain in this deck, that's for another day.
