Can [card]Equinox[/card] be used to counter a [card]Bend or Break[/card]? I'm not sure because there is no guarantee that it is going to destroy a land you control.

I know this won't happen in a tournament, but if my opponent has Chaos Orb in his hand while I'm controlling his turn from a Mindslaver, who flips the card if I force him to play it and activate it?

The "would destroy" wording on Equinox refers to the action of a spell that would occur if the spell were to resolve.  For example, if you target your opponent with Lightning Bolt, if it resolves, your opponent will take 3 damage.  Thus, Equinox only counters spells that target lands you control with a destroy effect, or one that destroys all lands you control.  It can't counter something that might destroy a land.  It has to be a sure thing if the spell resolves.  It can't be used to counter something like Balance, that would require you to sacrifice lands.  It can be used to counter Armageddon, because that would indeed destroy a land you control.  It could not be used to counter Desolation Angel that's had her kicker cost paid.  That would be an indirect effect and not counterable by Equinox.
