After this past Waterbury(despite that stupid UK Scoring Error again), there is no doubt in my mind that I want to continue Waterbury for quite a while.
Why…well…it had to do with a lot of things. The main one, of course, is you!

Yeah, time and time again, the integrity, positive attitude, selflessness, and comrodary of the Type 1 community keeps raising my spirit to a level I have never had playing Magic before.
From the Ashok donations, to the unexpected huge attendance for Type 4 and Magic Trivia, to understanding during the UK Error, to the many people who donated extra prizes, made cookies, volunteered to help, etc. TYPE 1 PLAYERS ARE WICKED AWESOME.
That being said, I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for being such a special community and for your continued support and participation at Waterbury. I often refer to it as a “grassroots� tournament, since it really grew out of nothing with all your support.
Now…as for all the specifics of this tourney report, I plan on doing it topically. I will just start writing paragraphs about all the people and things that went on during the weekend, and eventually I will (hopefully) have said all I want to say.
Setup the night before: One of the people that is most critical to the setup of Waterbury is one who very few of you actually know. He rarely plays type 1, and knows very few type 1 players. That being the case though, he always helps me set up tables/chairs the night before Waterbury and usually sells soda/chips/pizza during the day. His name is Scott Hughes, he is a great friend, and I felt the least I owed him was to thank him publicly for all his help.(Well that and I’m gonna buy him dinner!) We eventually met up with the great Jacob Orlove and drove back to my place for the night. Theresa finished up the Mox Cookies letting me sleep. She is an angel.
Theresa: You know that bolt of energy that never stops moving, the one that looks like a blond haired woman behind the Registration Table. Her name is Theresa. She devotes more time and energy to helping me put together and run Waterbury than anyone in the world and I am endlessly in her debt. In addition, the moral support she gives me is immeasurable.
Jacob Orlove, Aaron Rubenslein, Seth Levy, Derek McAtovey, Mike Spencer, Chris Kitzmiller, Jason LeDuc, Simon Cooper: This combination of hired staff, volunteer staff, and hired judges were AWESOME. One of the main problems with running Waterburys in the past was how I couldn’t handle everything that came up in a day by myself. All these people were a tremendous help. I can’t thank them enough and if you see any of these guys at a tournament, give them a pat on the back. With their help we were able to improve the tracking of penalties, increase the number of deck checks, sell pizza at multiple times in the day, run multiple events at once, and all in all run more smoothly(despite the UK error). I plan on hiring a few more in the future so that I could provide an even better tournament experience for all and going to find even more ways to compensate all these very professional staff members.
Liz del Cano, Sara Yarrington, Ashok Chitturi, Crazy Carl: These fine ladies and gents came forward with some very appreciated donations of prizes to add to the prize structure simply of their own volition. Liz donated some really awesome proxy cards with attractive scantly clad women on them. Sara made some of the yummiest cookies I have ever tasted. She put mana symbols on them and offered them up to the staff and feature match participants. Ashok donated some cool foil cards for round by round raffles, and Crazy Carl, VERY VERY selflessly donated an entire type 4 stack to be given away as the prize for the type 4 championships. Thanks goes out to all these fine people.
The Main Event(TMD OPEN 7): The event got off to a somewhat late start as a result of the horrible weather. It was announced that there were 186 players, but after some late entrants showed up, the total number was actually 191. Things were going well until round 2.
The UK Scoring System: Having happened at a Waterbury before(but at the time, not knowing what caused it), the pairings for round 2 went up and everyone noticed that they had a weird point value next to their name. The reason has to do with a bizarre feature of DCI Reporter which I just figured out happens out if you declick DCI Sanctioned Tournament, but still leave clicked DCI Point System. Apparently the UK point system is based on games and not match wins. As such, the tournament had to be redone on the computer. This meant that all 191 players names and team affiliations had to be reentered, all round 1 pairings had to be manually reentered, all round 1 results had to be manually reentered, all round 2 pairings had to be manually reentered, all round 2 results had to be manually reentered, before starting round 3. Some random pairing was done to avoid pairings based only on similar game records was handled and all data was diligently reentered during the round and after a shorter stint of time(30 minutes) the tournament was full updated and up and running again. Seth Levy, in particular, was pivotal in this quick turnaround(which normally could have taken up to 2 hours). The other staff, which handled all other issues, were also incredible.

Top 16 Coverage: One of the shortcomings of Waterbury is the limited amount of coverage during the top 16. With increased staff support at the next event, my hope is that there will be two matches receiving coverage match each round of the single elimination, as well as 4,3,2, and 1 judges respectively attending to the top 16 through final rounds.
Team Competition: Many of you know that I announced prior to the event that I would have full time help from Aaron Rubenslein and Jacob Orlove. I was looking for one more person, since Chris Hatcher had promised Travis LaPlante he would play on his team. For those who don’t know, Travis came back from Las Vegas, where he was living, in order to take Waterbury by storm, and lead a team to victory. Those were his exact words 3 weeks before the event started. Man, did he deliver. Chris Hatcher, Nate Pease, and Travis took home the team competition hands down with all three of their members making the top 16. Way to go TEAM OFF TWICE. It just goes to show…you can’t Beat OFF TWICE.
BYES: The byes for the event seemed to be a big hit. I expected fewer players to buy them and more to win them from vendors who included the bye as part of their prize structure. Maybe this will convince future TOs to offer them in advance and take the cost off the winner.
Type 4 Champs: This thing go many more people than I expected. Just under 50 people for the first ever Type 4 Champs is nothing to shake a stick at. Having never done this before, some things which weren’t expected cause slight difficulties, but we remedied them to the best of our ability. Among these:
1.) We really fell short on the number of stacks we could use. I was telling people earlier in the day that this would not be a problem. This was considering I only expected about 25 people or so would be up for this at around 10:30 pm. We were able to get enough stacks so that we had 7 tables of 7-8 people each. I would have liked to do tables of 6, and will plan more accordingly in the future.
2.) We had some small stacks, which when split among 7-8 people left small decks. As such, decking became an issue. I decided to make it such that a player could not be decked, he would simply keep playing with the cards at his disposal. This did not completely make cards like millstone useless, because it still limited the number of cards a player could draw into and use.
3.) Organization of tables. Next time, circular tables would be better.
4.) Number of people from each table. The winner from each table was sent to the final table. In retrospect, two from each table should have advanced.
5.) Other I may not be thinking of.
In the end it came down to Andy Probasco and Andy Farias. They agreed to a split in the end, and in the spirit of type 4, are sharing the stack. Special thanks again to Crazy Carl for your terrific donation of the prize structure. Much fun was had by all.
Magic Scattegories: Because we were running late, and since the whole world signed up for type 4, we didn’t end up doing Magic Scattegories. These prizes among others, which were supposed to be given out, as such did not find homes that night.
Other prizes: There are some things that got kind of brushed over. There wasn’t enough interest in play of the day, the oddest card/deck choice, and, as said, the Magic Scattegories didn’t get off the ground this time. However, I promised to give away prizes, and as such, I am holding to my word. I randomly picked player names just now and plan on sending prizes that were supposed to be given out to the following people:

Free Mana Drains: The attendance was a bit better than the previous one. I took a little bit of the extra money and used it to recount my loss from the last one. I still had a little bit of profit for myself + an extra $200 or so. I was going to bump up the prize support, but to me, it is already quite top heavy. I love to spread around the wealth as much as I can. As such, I decided I would simply throw two free Mana Drain Rafflees. Well, not completely free. The entry cost for the first was actually very simple. Look around the room and either pick up a piece of trash, fix a tablecloth, or put a table plaque back in its place. All were happy to oblige. The only problem was later I realized I might have been sending the wrong message. I hope that people recognized that as “lets keep this place clean� as opposed to “lets make a mess so Ray gives away more stuff.� As an interesting anecdote, when I gave away the second drain, I advertised that I was raffling off an Italian Mana Drain. When the winner came forward, not only did I not have an Italian Drain, but I only had signed ones left. Accordingly the person got an English Signed Drain…much more than he imagined. I felt happy for him, since the look on his face was well worth it.

I don’t know who can be classified the MVP of Waterbury. On one hand, Travis LaPlante won the main event and his team placed all three members in the top 16 to win the team competition. On the other hand Eli Kassis both top 4ed the main event and won the day 2 event. What do you guys think?
Highlander: This was a nail biter. With two players entering, Jacob Orlove defeated Simon Cooper in a best of 5 finals. This begs the question: Where the hell are all the highlander players? We should at least get 8. C’mon people…I expect ya’ll to represent next time.
Texas Holdem: Some things had time swaps and we started the Texas Holdem at 3:00 pm. We had 20 something players and narrowed 3 tables down to one. In the end it was Shawn Ampula from the Binghamton group who took it down. Some people, however, drove down and arrived at 4:00 pm just to play in the Hold’em tourney. I felt bad because they didn’t know about the time swap, and as such got together a 9 person table. This was split between two winners, Jeff(meth.) from Michigan and a female player whose name I don’t recall.
Sept 94: Believed to be the big event of day 2, the attendance for this was dismal. Was it because so many people were still playing in the Second Chance Toruney? Maybe the threat of Balance decks scared everyone away. Whatever the reason, this certainly was a fun event for all who participated. I saw Goblin Kings with Gauntlet of Might, and Chaos Orb flipping made me laugh. Perhaps the next of these “timeline events� will have better luck. We will just have to wait and see. As for the winner, I don’t recall. The top 4 was Jesse Pinchot, Ray Fucillo, Ben Medd, and Jeff Pusner. I know the two that won, split, and I gave them their prizes. “What is the only card to have the same flavor text all the way from Alpha to 9th edition?� and
“Besides Mistform Ultimus, what is the only creature of type Bunny?�
Boosters were awarded to each team with the winning team getting the most, including an Italian Legends Booster.
The Ashok Collection: Many of you have undoubtedly read this:

That being the case, seeing the amount of stuff donated in response to the horribly wicked act that was done to Ashok was absolutely awesome. In case you don’t know, some prick took a full set of power and 4 Bazaars right out of a binder in Ashok’s hotel room. This person deserves to rot in hell. I asked people to search their hearts and donate something to help Ashok, master trader that he is, who will likely turn it all back into the stuff he lost. I myself have known that shitty feeling that results from having such a large amount of stuff missing, and so I led by example donating a BB Taiga, Italian Legends Booster Pack, Asian Sliver Queen, and some other stuff. By the end, people had donated 2 Bazaars, a Mana Drain, tons of cash and lots and lots of type 2 and 1.5 cards. Everyone did not have to give a fortune, but everyone seemed to give what they could afford. Having known Ashok for a long time, I know him to be a very selfless, giving person and I am certain it is these positive qualities, being known well by others, that caused others to be so generous.
Changes from after TMD Open 6: Remember how stressed I was with running Waterbury after the last event. A lot of things have changed: more staff, more preparation ahead of time, more financial stability, and more love for the Type 1 community. I can say assuredly I am back and refreshed. I am looking forward to running Waterbury in the future and, as always, making it better than ever.
As for other things, and I am sure there are some, they will be added in later. Let me finish off for now by saying this was a great Waterbury and I can’t wait for the next one.
