I was watching one game in which a stax player had completely locked his opponent out of the game (Crucible/Strip, Trinishpere, 3x Sphere of Resistance, and Chalice of the Voids set to 0, 1, 2, and 3 -- and the other player was playing combo).  This was during game 3 of the top table's match, and the stax player was simply unable to find a win condition.  Finally, he topdecked Tinker, played it -- and Chalice of the Void on 3 promptly countered it.

My question is this:  If he had sacrificed the Chalice with 3 counters (to pay Tinker's additional cost), would the Tinker have resolved?  Or had Chalice's ability already been triggered at that point?

Not only is it on gatherer in the info on Chalice of the void:

Quote
Gatherer : Dec 1, 2004 - Chalice of the Void has to be in play at the end of playing a spell for the ability to trigger. If you sacrifice Chalice of the Void as a cost to play a spell, its ability can't trigger.

A search of Tinker + Chalice on the Rules forum yields not 1, not 2 but 3 topics that give the answer to your question. Using the standard things (gatherer + search) before asking a question is tech...

Sorry about that.  I'd mistakenly thought that it couldn't be so easy.

Right on.

However, if it were a Sphere of Resistence that you were sacrificing it would be different.  Because unlike Chalce which has to trigger after the spell is played, Sphere actually adds to the cost of playing Tinker.  Therefore, you would have to pay four for the Tinker, even if you sacrifice the Sphere.

It just kind of seemed to be on topic, and a similar situation with different result, so I threw it out there.

Very nice of you to add, but that is also covered in the afore-mentioned topics Smile
