<BR4M> awesome news
<BR4M> We've an event called 'Domino Day' in The Netherlands. It's basically a TV broadcast of a large scale domino construction
<BR4M> it sucks major balls
<BR4M> apparently, some bird managed to fly into the hanger during preparations
<BR4M> and knocked over 23,000 domino stones
<BR4M> and they shot it
<BR4M> and now at least 7 environmental organisations are up in arms
<BR4M> they've promised a 5,000 euro prize for the person who will knock over domino stones before the broadcast
<BR4M> it's great that stuff like this still makes the evening news
<BR4M> there's elaborate preparations to be found in the web
<BR4M> people are planning all sorts of splintercell-like stuff
<BR4M> leaf blowers, 1500 W bass tones, throwing bouncy balls through open windows...
<BR4M> the TV company has increased security
<BR4M> DEFCON 3!
<BR4M> the guy who shot the bird has recieved a death threat
<BR4M> that's current-day Holland for ya

I can just see someone coming through a vent only to drop a marble into the mix all james bond style.  This seems like a job for Macgyver.

Well, I'll admit that the first thing I thought when I heard the news was "why the hell did they shoot the fucking bird?". That kind of bird is protected you know, so I guess the shooter will get some court action going on. Anyway, the environmental organisations take it waaaaaay to seriously. So props to them for making it funny.

The broadcast in Friday right? I'll try to watch it this time, cause it made me curious.

Are we sure this isn't some sort of genius publicity stunt?  I mean, if I lived in Dutchie-land I'd probably watch it, too, just to see if someone screwed it up on camera.

We have/ had the same thing in Germany (I don't know if they still do it). I'm pretty sure this was no publicity stunt, just because the effort involved is SOO FRICKIN' huge. Over here, at least, last time I saw it they had enough work set out for them just putting up 1,4 million domino pieces. Volunteers setting up the fields weren't allowed to wear shoes for fear of heavy tread, worked 12-14 hours a day and still got pressed by time. It was never sure they'd make it till broadcast time. Some volunteers break out in tears when their particular field doesn't fall perfectly, for heavens sake. They exhaust themselves to no end.

I don't think they'd actually make themselves work harder just for that publicity. Although you never know, and I could believe it, I think it'd be too heartbreaking an act to actually stage it. Every year, they try to set up a new record... all ruined by a birdie? No way, SO JUST SHOOT THE DAMN THING!!! ...sorry, got carried away there.

Who carries a gun when setting up those domino pieces, ffs?

Let's hope someone screws up the whole thing not by stopping the cascade, but by making them fall all at once. How would you do it?

That's pretty much exacty what I was thinking.

Hasn't some bored engineer come up with a good device for setting dominoes? It seems like such a waste of time otherwise.

It exists. It's available in a $20 domino box for children. But you can only do straight lines with it. Certainly not the contraptions they make for domino day.

I'm a bored engineer, and I'm going to be devoting a lot of time to thinking of a way to blow them all over at once, rather than laying them Smile

Seriously, these environmental organisations are taking it a little too far with the bounty and the death threat, but I gotta say shooting that bird is pretty friggin' lame. It's not like it *wanted* to ruin their pathetic little game. If a sparrow flies into the building during a GP, do we shoot it? No. These guys just did because the made the assessment that if they captured it, like they should have, it (or they...) would likely have done more damage before it was caught. So the killed it, thereby explicitly valueing their silly event (or worse: avoiding extra work for their silly event) higher than the life of an innocent creature. Fuck that. Really.

Well, they actually tried to catch it before unleashing the Major with Painless upon the "Dominoter". But it didn't work, so the bird was killed. Just to put all of this in perspective, the Netherlands is a country where people do this to earn money.

As for wrecking all the stones in one time, I'd say one of these trucks could do the trick. They are used for seismic research, by smashing a heavy weight against the ground, to be able to measure the vibrations in the ground. I think that would be an effective way to do the trick. Either the truck or a huge pile of explosives. Hmm... explosives Smile

YES!

I need that truck. And not just for ruining Domino Day, either.

Reminder for Bram : There probably is a label on the huge weight stating something like this :

Please be so kind to remove any human beings below the massive weight before thrashing it into the ground. Considered a mild safety hazard.

Just to let you know Wink

Europe needs something to do with its time. Might I suggest a nice middle eastern war?
