RIW Hobbies is considering putting on a full power nine tournament in Michigan sometime this summer.  However, we'd have to make sure we got enough people as to avoid a gigantic financial disaster.  How many people would be willing to come to a power nine tourament in Michigan (10 Proxy), and if so is there a general consensus as to which weekend would be the best to hold this event?

Cheers,FFY

Essentially the question is: how close to Gencon is good?  The weekend before so East and West Coasters can hit everything in a big, long week of Magic?  Or a few weekends before so that Midwesterners can recharge between events?

While it's still pretty early, you can probably count on 15-20 Canadians making this event, and this is not counting the Quebecers who might make the trip. We would certainly appreciate any P9 events so close to us.

The problem is that we have to cover the initial cost of the power.

Anything we make more we would certainly give back in additional prizes.  But we have to get close to covering the initial prizes.

As long as we get enough interest and it looks like we can come close to covering the prize support;   we would have no problem running this event.

What I need from you guys is to tell me when to run it, and then helping to make sure we get the word out and get enough players.

One suggestion is that the store puts up some sort of minimum guaranteed prize support (like 1-2 pieces of P9), and have the full P9 prize contingent on a certain turn out. There have been some recent issues/disasters concerning prizes in T1 events, and while no one should by any means be singled out for blame when things do go wrong, we don't want anyone to experience any major losses.

Maybe you can tell us what sort of attendance + entry fee would be required by the store to reach the necessarily minimum for the P9 prize support to happen?

Also: this might be a tangental discussion, but I've often wondered what increasing the proxy count to 12 or even 15 would do for attendance.

I would have no problem with doing any of those things;

it is just a question of what is the ideal way of putting on a power nine tournament in Michigan over the summer where all we have to do is come close to break even?

Extra proxies is not a problem.

If we did it as a guarentee X pieces based upon Y attendence, it might be possible to do preregistration where if people register ahead of time it would be a substantiall less entry fee.  That way when we put up the thread on the Drain we can update it as we get attendence.  Like once we hit a specific number RIW could put up an edit that says the tourney is now guarenteed four pieces of power, and then as we get more players registered it would move up to five and six. until the full nine was reached.

Does that seem like an acceptable way of running a P9 tourney?

The extra proxies thing would be amazing.

As far as anything else, I will drag my lame ass out regardless, out of mad love for pam and riw, and power for that matter, but I dont have any sound advice.

you have to garuntee some crazy prize support or you will lose lots of attandee's. Put your balls out there a little and do something like "No matter what Lotus, Mox, Mox, Mox." At least this way there is still plenty of reason for people to come out. If you onyl garuntee 1 - 2 moxes, then you will only get 20 - 35 people.

I can't speak for all of the CO Crew, but Fuckin' Lou and I will definitely make it up to Michigan for a P9 event. It'd be ideal if ya'll had it the weekend before GenCon. It's a fucking awesome way to start GenCon and I'm sure it'll drag some Europeans to the states.

Just let us know when it is, and we'll bring the bong!

And I am pretty sure many of you will find comfortable places in our homes if you travel...

But if clown wants to stay with me he has to sleep in the crawlspace with the bodies gacy left there.

Well of course.

The whole point is for you to score, regardless of a power tourney. I look out for the people I love.
