I stumbled across an old idea I had for a color changing creature. Here it is:

Vibrant Chameleon ???)

Whenever Vibrant Chameleon becomes a new color, put a+1/+1 counter on it.

???: Change Vibrant Chameleon's color to another color of your choice.

I'm not sure what the costs on something like this should be though. Can anyone help?

Current:

Vibrant Chameleon (1UG)

Whenever Vibrant Chameleon becomes a new color, put a+1/+1 counter on it.

4: Change Vibrant Chameleon's color to another color of your choice.

2/3

I know this won't happen in a tournament, but if my opponent has Chaos Orb in his hand while I'm controlling his turn from a Mindslaver, who flips the card if I force him to play it and activate it?

There's not a lot of effects that change something's color to one of your choice, but most of them are Blue/Green.  Most notably, Spiritmonger and Wild Mongre, but there are lots of Blue ones from Invasion and U has lots of those Alter Reality effects too.  Since this is a creature that grows from changing colors, though, I think having double-G in the casting cost is prudent.  Something like

1UGG

Creature - Chameleon

Whenever -this- changes color, put a +1/+1 counter on it.
GG: -this- becomes the color of your choice. (This effect doesn't end AEOT).

AEOT clause seems in color for a chameleon, yes?  It would also be fitting if, when it blocked a creature, it became that creature's color.  It wouldn't be a seasy to pump but it would have that chameleon flavor of blending with surrounding items.

It might be neat to have it change color when a certain event happens, like whenever a spell is countered, or a creature comes into play, instead of just an activation cost, since the way it is now with a acitvation cost, it won't be used for the color changingness. Making it change color when something happens allows you to make a deck around it, as well as makes cards like thoughtlace possibly combo well with it.

The pump seems a bit too cheap.  I would almost say make the +1/+1 not counters but an until EOT buff instead.

Well I suppose one could shorten it to

Cost: -this- gets +1/+1 and becomes the color of your choice UEOT.

....but that looks an awful lot like something else. :P  What if it changes color according to the spell your opponent casts?

Whenever an opponent casts a spell, -this- becomes the colors of that spell UEOT.
Whenever -this- changes color, put a +1/+1 counter on it.

Now it's more like a weird version of Mr Babycakes.

Do this, and it is an awesome version of wild mongrel:

Whenever an opponent casts a spell, -this- becomes the colors of that spell UEOT.
Whenever -this- changes color, it gets +1/+1 UEOT

Or maybe have it be any spell? The problem with that is it would have to be a 1/1 for four or something similarly unappetizing. With my above wording, I could see him as a 2/2 for two.

Golgari Guildmage gives counters, and it's only a hybrid card with another useful ability. I think counters are fine. What do you think of the new current version?
