Sanctioned Tournements with Top 8

I just wanted to know if the Top 8 of a sanctioned tournement is supposed to go into the DCI as part of the regular tournement? I was pretty sure it wasn't but just noticed that one went in and wanted to check.

Yup, it is. Every match you play in the T8 is simply another round. So if you've played 6 rounds of swiss and then T8, the Quarter is your 7th round, semi's your 8th and the finals the 9th round.

The DCI doesn't actually have strict rules for how tournaments are to be run in terms of the exact number of rounds, that I know of.  Most everyone runs modified swiss with the number rounds determined as the nearest power of two bigger than the number of participants (that might be a DCI minimum, but I don't know for sure), but you don't have to.  Adding an extra round is perfectly acceptable (often done in straight swiss tournaments to make tiebreakers less of a factor), and having a T8 is also perfectly acceptable.  An FNM back home has a cut to T8, while the others I've played in are just straight swiss.  Hell, you could run single-elimination tournaments if you really wanted to (as drafts often are).
