After reading that last Rosewater article, I was curious to know why the average TMDer plays this game.

So, take the quiz and let us know where you fit, according to MaRo.

Timmy/Spike & Spike/Timmy

Timmy/Spike is torn. He wants to win, yet he also wants to have fun. To solve this dilemma, he searches among the viable decks for the one that seems like it will be the most fun to play. Timmy/Spike is the guy who goes out of his way to play a dragon in his deck. Not one that shouldn't be played, mind you. But if there's a dragon that makes sense, Timmy/Spike is all over it.

Cool.

Back in the day, I got Spike/Johnny & Johnny/Spike.  This time I got Spike.  I wonder if he added more analytical questions to the survey this time (he talked about them in the personality breakdown, which I don't remember being in the personality breakdown originally), because that's where I get my fun with Magic.

Your Type Is: Spike / Johnny.

Johnny/Spike wants to win. He just wants to win with style. Johnny/Spike is the rogue deck builder. He's the guy that comes up with the crazy decks that just might work. But Johnny/Spike takes the next step; he actually plays it. Johnny/Spike is out to prove that he can win while having the limitation of also being innovative while he does so.

Hmmn. Not what I would have picked.  I think it is because the card choices are all type 2 and I don't pay attention to a lot of them.  They should redo this with vintage cards.

I'm a total Spike. Of the various categories of Spike, I think innovator fits best.

I'm a spike.  I believe I'm nuts and bolts because I truly think doing your best means perfecting your play..  That and I'm a terrible innovator.  Though I am also a bit of a Tuner.

Johhny/Spike.  I like coming up with creative, innovative deck ideas, but when it comes down to it, I'm not going to play something I know is sub-optimal (except for budget concerns).

Unsurprisingly, I'm pure Spike. As for a subgroup, "Tuner" fits me best.

I was Johnny/Spike in the first, but now I turned into Spike. Tuners fit best for sub-group.

I was a Johnny/Spike for the first one, but I guess I'm Spike now. Nuts & Bolts probably fits best.

I'm a Spike, with a few characteristics of both Innovator and Tuner. I think the best way to describe the common theme is my strong focus on deckbulding.

I'm a Timmy/Spike, which explains why I keep trying to build a tournament-viable deck with Exalted Angel. (God, I miss 4cC...) It also explains why I like T4 so much. Very Happy

As for subgroups, I think Social/Diversity Timmy and Tuner with a little Analyst Spike fit me best, although it's only an approximation.

The last time I took this test, I came up as a Johnny/Spike.  At the time, I had aspirations of playing Vintage Magic and I was striving to perfect my play.  This time around, I came up as a Johnny/Timmy.  I still like tinkering with the cards in unusual ways, but I think that my focus has shifted dramatically from winning to having fun.  I haven't felt driven to compete lately as I once did.  I expect that will probably change again in the future, but for the time being, my Spike side is laying low. I may have been closer to pure Johnny, except I couldn't help but pick Stitch in Time as a card that I love to play.  Rosewater made it a point to emphasize that it was a showcase Timmy card.

I am a Pure Spike. Though I think I fit all the subgroups a little. As I tinker with decks, try and come up with my own, and well winning is cool.

But then again it could just be all the type 1 getting to me on how I see cards.

I wanted to pick non-Spike cards, but there just weren't any I could justify choosing at all. For the record, my picks were Confidant, Helix, Leyline, Loam, and Cloak. I think part of the problem is that I just don't have any format to play the other cards in--all of those are good in either Vintage or Skittles, but the rest are basically never ones I am going to cast.

I also tried playing around with the various choices in the second question, but of the six or seven I was deciding between, none put me as anything but pure spike.

My choices were bob, helix, char, cutpurse, loam. I actually only really like bob and helix off the entire list, but I had to pick five.

I clocked in at Spike, with a subgroup of Most likely Nuts & Bolts/ Tuner.

The 5 cards I chose were Char, LftL, Cutpurse, Bob, Helix.

Is it just me or does a 2 question test really seem like not enough for this?

I actually had to explain to someone why Mana Drain was better than Counterspell. That was depressing...

Then they asked why Black Lotus was better than Gilded Lotus. I walked away.

Intuitively, it seems to me that by picking five items out of large lists, they can actually extract a lot of information from those questions.  Since each of the cards and responses is going to be weighted differently among the three psychographs, you're really providing ten datapoints on a 3-axis spectrum (think bond-type-triangle, for any of you chemists) from which they can average out your final position on that triangle.

I tested as a spike but I consider myself a Spike/Johnny.  I love winning and playing good cards, but I also love the interactions in the game, card synergies make deck building fun for me.  I like to think of the game as a contest to see who can make cards change zones the most.
