Today I noticed the addition of the "Karma" feature involving Applaud/Smite ability next to every user name. Personally, I find it ennoying, pointless, and a popularity contest. Its almost like a stroking contest for bigger name TMD members.

It obviously does no harm, but it has nothing to do with magic, and fosters nothing but bad will. Am I the only one who feels this way?

So my question is: Do you like this new feature? Do you even care about? and last but not least... has there been a person you have smited 10+ times yet (Evenpence, Smennen, Forcefieldyou, etc?) I havent, but someone must of with the large # of smites.

I blame that Orlove dude. Looking at my own karma score, it's all a big conspiracy* to get rid of me, I tells ya! It won't work, dammit!

*Or maybe it has something to do with the date being April 1...

Ah yes, what a horrible feature this is. If only it was designed to last for a short period of time...

Ah, somebody smited the shit out of me!  AWESOME!!  (but if something bad happens to me, like I wake up with a hangover or Iwith Josh's sister again... I'm holding TMD responsible.)
I clicked on the feature one time, and one time only.

I smited Hi-Val.  I'm not sure why...

Doug is such a nice guy I just wanted to let him know I'm on to his tricks.  Smited Biatch.

I actually just can't justify why I did it.  I wish I could take it all back, but its too late for that now...

What a stupid feature.

Cheers

I kinda like the karma feature--it's fun to see how people behave when they're given something like this and not told what to do with it.

I get the feeling it would eventually crash the server due to an incredible amout of clicks.

I doubt it if it was a person clicking. What would crash it would be everyone spamming it with requests. Although I'm sure that if it was on a more permanent basis, they'd do something a bit more involved than just index.php?action=applaud. Any one of the millions of autorefresh scripts could mod people up/down into oblivion.

Oh, it only only allows any user to vote on any given person once every X hours. The default setting for X was 1, but I changed it to 0 to make things more interesting.

I think it's a great way for someone on TMD to get a "quality rep" that is more relevent than post #.  If people trash a person's replies on a consistent basis, that person might re-consider some of their posts.

That said, I think you might have to reset the numbers for the first few weeks until the urge to "go crazy" diminshes and people become bored spending clicks to give someone -40.

If I wanted to use it that way (which I don't), I'd set it to show karma totals (rather than positive/negative separately), and I'd set X to something like 100.

You'd also probably want to set it so that people can't change karma of a post more than once.

Oh, if we're getting into specialty mods/reprogramming the karma software, then I'd probably just give everyone one vote/day--if you want to applaud a good post that day, then you don't get to smite anything.

If I wanted to use it that way (which I don't),

So what was the point of it then, other than to see how many smites people could get?  Doesn't seem very informative, and giving someone 40 smites is pointless and elementary.......

I like the concept, still not understanding the motivation.
