25 people showed up to play for the Mox Ruby, which is down from last time.  Interestingly enough, tournaments throughout Wisconsin and Illinois have seen a rather large decline in attendance as of late.  Hopefully this trend will reverse itself soon enough.

Top 8 goes as follows:

1st: Dan Carp (DC Doubletap Gifts)
2nd: David Carhart (Oath)
3rd-4th: Mike Hritz (EBA)
3rd-4th: Tommy Kowolith (Kowal Gifts)
5th-8th: Jeremy Seroogy (5c "Spooky" Stax)
5th-8th: Chris Nighbor (5c Stax)
5th-8th: Jeff Rieck (Control Slaver)
5th-8th: Tim Rieck (Affinity)

Sadly, no GWS members at this, but Reflection made an appearance.  Since most tournament reports tend to get technical, I say nuts to that.  Time for commentary!

-Playing "speed" matches with Gifts versus Oath is one of the more amusing things you can do.  David Carhart and I sat down and played a few quick games and quickly drew a crowd with the obscene absurdity of the matchup.  I've never heard a response like the one David got when he pulled a Force off his Impulse to counter my Flame Fussilade for a game that didn't matter.

-Watching a teammate get t-boned on the way to getting food is a big frown.

-Props to the store staff for putting up with the near constant barrage of crap I put them through.  Seriously.

-I@n deGraff doing a dead-on JDizzle impression explaining how bad Uba Stax really is.  I feel somewhat proud that I had some remote and insignificant part in JDizzle reaching that conclusion.

-Slops to me for pussying out and not playing GWS' Man Plan deck.  Endress, feel free to steal my Goldfish at the next tournament, I don't deserve them.

Appleton's like a 5 hour drive for us.  Its not worth the drive when you can only take/find so much time to go to tournaments and there are multiple tournaments in the next month that are closer.  Milwaukee and Chicago are more centralized locations for the group that tends to show up and I suspect the Ancestral (S. Milwaukee-4/15), Jet (Milwaukee--Game Universe-5/6), and Sapphire (College of Dupage-5/14) tournaments will have 32+ people at each tournament.

The Ancestral tournament at Pastimes a few weeks ago that only got like 27 was just a bad day to have it on.  Sunday means people have school and work, plus the weather was absolute crap.

What's the usual turnout for Appleton anyways?

People are impersonating me and I wasn't there to hear?  I'll take your word for it that it was good, but I'd like to make sure that the impression is up to the level of ridiculousness with which I regularly express myself.  Man, the last rant I did along the lines of "this deck doesn't do anything" was one of my best.  <3  You should hear me rant on about some of the decks Brian Demars has played in other formats -- they do even less!! Razz

Also, Hydra, love the sig about Jerry Orbach. Law and Order is like my fav show ever! Anyone who's ever tried to IM me knows that my away message usually reads "Law and Order -- in HD!!" from the hours of 7 to 11 PM or so every night.

5 hour drives dont seem to bother the teams that are serious about Vintage!!   Razz

3 Tormod's Crypt
1 Duplicant
2 pithing needle
1 Triskelion
2 Ray Of Revelation
2 Swords To Plowshares
2 rack and ruin

Heres the list that I played.  I decided to cut the fastbond and the engineered explosives for this one and added in the 4th sphere of resistance and an in the eye of chaos.  All in all I was happy with how the deck performed.  I went 4-1 putting me at the top seat going into the top 8.  I ended up playing oath first round of top 8 and just wasn't drawing what I needed.  Both games he had 2nd turn oath with force backup and there was not much I could do to get out of it.  Overall this one only got 25 people, which is pretty small for them.  Last tourney we got in the high 30s.  Overall the tournaments at Chimera Hobby shop are always ran smooth with ex+ or better condition power.  None of it is beat to hell stuff like the ruby or ancestral were at pastimes.  I am working with him to set up a DOUBLE MOX in JUNE!!!  Just got to work out some minor details...

I played Shay-Tog-Lord Control Slaver.  Nothing really to showcase, just good cards..

Maindeck
    2  Flooded Strand
    4  Volcanic Island
    1  Library of Alexandria
    2  Underground Sea
    1  Tolarian Academy
    3  Island
    3  Polluted Delta

    1  Black Lotus
    1  Mana Crypt
    1  Mox Pearl
    1  Mox Jet
    1  Mox Emerald
    1  Sol Ring
    1  Mox Sapphire
    1  Mox Ruby
    4  Thirst for Knowledge
    1  Tinker
    1  Ancestral Recall
    1  Time Walk
    4  Mana Drain
    4  Brainstorm
    4  Force of Will
    1  Demonic Tutor
    1  Yawgmoth's Will
    1  Fact or Fiction
    2  Mindslaver
    1  Rack and Ruin
    1  Echoing Truth
    2  Tormod's Crypt

    2  Red Elemental Blast
    2  Ensnaring Bridge
    1  Pyroblast
    2  Fire/Ice
    3  Chalice of the Void
    3  Duress

Never having been to this side of the state for a tournament, I didn't really know what to expect.  I guessed that the Icky deck would be there, as well as IT.  Turns out that there was really none there.  Everyone must be sick of it.  This is a REAL QnD report.

Round 1: Mono red Gobbos, 2-1  I win games 2,3 with Tinker in my opening hand
Round 2: Spooky Stax, 1-0-1  I win a long back and forth game by draining a smoky then Willing
Round 3: 5c Stax, 0-2  I get super owned by Turn 1 drop-his-hand, sphere (forced), tinker/Titan
Round 4: 5c Stax, 2-0  Welder tricks
Round 5: ID with my brother
Top8: AngryPheldaGifts, 0-2  Angry + Gifts do their thing for -20 life game 1.  I go all in with LOA, AR, Walk, Force, Thirst, Sol Ring, and something  game 2, then fail to draw any islands.

GOod job with your list, Dan! It looks really interesting. Perhaps you would write an article on the deck?  Wink

Jerry Orbach FTW.   Kowal once PMed me expressing his support for my sig in a way that only Kowal can.  Also, I@n was indeed quite over the top with his impression, you would've been quite proud.

As far as the lack of lists is concerned, I could post them, but there's only two lists (now that Dan has posted his) that haven't already been posted here in some way, shape or form recently: the EBA list and the Affinity one.  All the rest were standard fare, which is why I dodn't post them.  If they are wanted I will, but I didn't see the wisdom in putting forth the effort to type up decklists you've all seen half a dozen times in the past 3 months.

The turnout for the two Mox tournaments at this venue before this one had high-30's for attendance.  I do realize 5 miles is a bit of a drive, but I did offer Endress and Fisher a place to crash if they wanted to come up the night before a tournament up here.  That's extended to Reb, Becker, Moxlotus and any of the other guys I know, but I only have space to house 1-2 guys comfortably.

I worry about staying with you.

Anyways, a 10 hour round trip is a long ways for just another mox tourney. I've been fortunate enough be within 3 hours of monthly tournaments held at 3 different stores (Ogre's in STL, random place in Blooomington IN, and Pastimes in Chicago). I think 25 people for a mox is a pretty fair turnout. Maybe attendance has slightly fallen because there are infi tourneys in the midwest right now.

Congrats to all that t8ed, except for Dan. jk
