Tournament Report
Tobias Egelhof
Hanau, 22.04.2006 - Vintage
Horden Tendrils

For reference, the other reports I wrote:

We made minor changes from the last version of Horden Tendrils, that placed me second in last Karlsruhe's tournament. We finally removed the last Infernal Contracts and replaced them with a Demonic Consultation and Imperial Seal. The list now played a lot smoother and much more consistent. Consultation also has good synergy with Force of Will and of course with the rest of the deck.

Here is the list:

Tobias Egelhof
"Horden Tendrils - Combo-Sau!"

4 Chromatic Sphere
1 Black Lotus
1 Lotus Petal
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Lion's Eye Diamond
1 Chrome Mox
1 Mox Diamond
1 Mana Vault
1 Memory Jar
4 Force of Will
4 Brainstorm
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Timetwister
1 Tinker
1 Mind's Desire
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Hurkyl's Recall
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Brain Freeze
4 Cabal Ritual
4 Dark Ritual
3 Tendrils of Agony
1 Necropotence
1 Yawgmoth's Bargain
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Imperial Seal
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Demonic Consultation
1 Tolarian Academy
4 Polluted Delta
1 Underground Sea
1 Island
1 Swamp
60

Sideboard
2 Snuff Out
3 Defense Grid
2 Rebuild
1 Hurkyl's Recall
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Echoing Truth
1 Rushing River
1 Brain Freeze
1 Darksteel Colossus
1 Island
1 Swamp
15

The sideboard was changed a bit, as we felt Duress to be unnecessary having Forces main. So we increased the bounce potpourry and added Snuff Out, which could help against Meddling Mage and Dragon.

Tournament started with 32 people, 6 rounds of swiss.

1st round
Thomas Minning
UG something

I win both games almost exactly the same way: play a late (turn 3-4) Yawgmoth's Bargain with 13 life, draw some cards and then Imperial Seal for Will. He did not do much to stop me.

Games 2:0:0
Matches 1:0:0

2nd round
Tilmann Barth
UGW Oath with Null Rods and Extracts

Third turn I force a Null Rod and he extracts me, taking Will. Sixth turn I go off, play some mana and Memory Jar, sac. The new cards are Lotus, LED, Twister (and some stuff). I play Twister, saccing LED for black mana. I get Lotus again, which meets Tilman's Force of Will, but I still have enough: Ritual, Ritual, Seal, Sphere, Tendrils.
Second game I Twister second turn, which gets Forced. He gets Null Rod out and forces my Tutor. Finally he gets Oath with Orchard out and oathes up Plat, which kills me.
Third game Tilamnn mulligans to 6 and doesn't seem to be happy. I fan open my cards and AM happy! I kill first turn, hoping he has no Force - he doesn't.
My hand was: Mox Jet, Ritual, Demonic Tutor,Chain of Vapor, Yawgmoth's Will and 2 more cards I don't remember.

Games 4:1:0
Matches 2:0:0

At that point I get tired of writing down all the plays, so my report may become a bit less detailed now.

3rd turn
Peter Sieb
UB Tendrils

I know Peter and his Tendrils build quite well from the last tournament, were I won against him.
He wins the die roll and starts with first turn Necropotence, I have no Force. He sets 10 cards aside but fails to kill me next turn, takes some more cards and finally manages to win.
Second game I hold a hand with 2 Forces but not much else. I hope to stop him after he spent some ressources. He starts with Duress, which I force. He contracts, which I let resolve. He plays a lot of mana, vampirics and plays Memory Jar, I force, he forces back. With much mana open he breaks the Jar but fails to find something to kill me, besides Will, which - of course - I force 8)
Meanwhile he is at six life and has no cards left. After some turns I cast Tendrils for 6.
Last game Peter begins. Somehow he just manages to cast Tendrils as the fifth spell, so its 10 life up for him and down for me. I don't remember how exactly it happened, but I managed to resolve a draw-7, followed by much mana and casting the last card in my hand - Mind's Desire for 13. Revealing 13 cards from my deck is always fun. Together with 2 Forces there is Imperial Seal and Chromatic Sphere.

Games 6:2:0
Matches 3:0:0

4th turn
Oliver Salten
UR Stax

We both agree that winning the die roll wins the match. I win the roll and accept his defeat Smile
Nevertheless, we play the match for fun...
First game he mulligans to 5, commenting his 6-card hand as being "not broken enough". His first round is Mox Ruby, Chalice 0, Academy, Trinisphere. Ok, that was broken Wink
I board my Workshop stuff (lands and artifact bounce) and elect to start game 2.
I have first turn Necropotence and take 11 cards, keeping Force, Rebuild a blue card and something to kill. He casts Sphere of Resistance, which I force, but he has another one. That forces me to take another turn to play a land, take 4 more cards off Necropotence and Ritual, Rebuild on his EOT. In my third turn I win.
Third game Oliver starts and gets out Chalice 0, Welder and later Tangle Wire and Pyrostatic Pillar. It takes me some turns to prepare my winning turn (being at 10 life), where I Rebuild (10 life) in my upkeep, topdeck Lotus, play Lotus (8 life), Mana Vault (6 life), Dark Ritual (4 life), Yawgmoth's Will (2 life),  Tendrils (12 life), replay the mana and cast the second Tendrils I am already holding. The turn before he even Capped me, but since I had everything in my hand it didn't hurt me - how lucky 8)

Games 8:3:0
Matches 4:0:0

5th round
Christian Hangel
Mono-R Time Bandits

Christian was with Time Vaults to make the best of them until the errata became effective. His list was not too bad against combo, and he can kill quite fast also. To demonstrate my superiority I win the die roll...
First game I mulligan to 6 and kill second turn after Vampiric for Lotus. His first turn play was Lodestone Myr, so I guess he could have killed me second turn also.
Second game Christian mulligans to 5 and starts with Lotus, Time Vault and Pyrostatic Pillar. That makes it a bit more tricky for me to win, but not impossible. Second turn I play 4 Moxen, some more spells until I am at 2 life (spellcount 8) and Tendrils for 18. Next turn I play the second Tendrils and win.

Games 10:3:0
Matches 5:0:0

So now I am one game away from that Library, but my last opponent is an unknown evil...

6th round
Philip Stirm
UB Dark Mask

Philip is new to our region, coming from Hamburg. I guess he is a good player, and how true that was...
First game he duresses me twice, but as my Ancestral Recall resolves I feel he has no Force and cast Yawgmoth's Bargain and win the same turn. It takes me some work to get Force backup for my Tendrils, since he has a fetchland open and possibly Stifle, but in the end I get everything done with 2 life left.
Second game is much worse. Philip manages to get out Arcane Lab and a Confidant, after duressing and countering my threats.
Third game is not different, he also gets Arcane Lab out and finishes me with Confidant. At the point he cast the Lab I had 2 cards in hand: Force and Tinker. Somehow I thought I could bounce the Lab later and therefore keep Tinker, but Philip showed me my mistake and made none himself. Good game!
After the match he tells me he sideboarded Masks and Dreadnoughts out and played Mono-U(B) after boarding. A very good decision.

So Philip wins the Library and I place second in a very entertaining and challenging tournament. I am very satisfied with the latest list of Horden Tendrils and it seems to be the strongest one so far. We still debate about the 4 disruption slots (Forces or Duress), but the rest seems to be fixed now. I will probably write a primer on it soon, if I find time.

My teammate Rych placed 4th and was so happy that he didn't stop telling me how bad he played and how lucky he was and how much fun he had during the whole way home. The next day also Smile

Congratulations for a good Performance again. Indeed i was ready to go off next turn and a Time Vault was waiting to kill you, too sad you had to go off the one turn too early Wink.
But i never saw a singel chalice against you. It was quite a funny Tournament and i expected everything but not that many Stax Decks.

greetings Chris
