EDIT: My tourney report is added to end of post.

Austin and his Mox and the Dimir Guildmage (TECH!) that got him there.

One of these is Andy Griswold with a  "Game Face" and the other is Zhalfirin.

Aune Vs Ochoa in semi-finals. Two men enter, one man leaves.

Austin vs Eirik: This is when Austin kicked Eirik in the nuts.

Austin Martinez (age 12) piloting SlapJack 2K6 wins against 20ish person tourney!

Top 8 was as follows:

Webster - Bob Tendrils
Vegetta2711- Grim Bob Tendrils
LotusHead- The Gilded Claw
Jeremy Fuentes- Ichorid
Eirik Aune- Gifts Tendrils
Austin Martinez- SlapJack 2K6
Andy Griswold- Repeal/Reclaim Oath
Stan Gin- Monored UbaStax?

Web pwned Stan
Vegetta 2711 pwned Andy
Austin pwned Lotushead
Eirik pwned Jeremy (or one conceeded. I am not sure which)

Top 4
Austin pwned Vegetta2711
Eirik pwned Web

Finals:

Game 1: Austins draws the nuts enough hand to kick Eirik in the nuts with Meddling Mages, Trinket Mages and so forth.

Game 2: Eirik kicks Austin in the nuts via storm count of 20.

Game 3: Austin wins an early counterwar over Eirik's Fact or Fiction, fighting through 2 REB. (yes, that's Drain, Force, Drain keeping Time Walk left in hand). Austin topdecks lands for about 5 turns and Eirik resolves brainstorm after brainstorm. Auston eventually gets a Brainstorm and sees Salvager, Trinket Mage, Salvager. Austin combos off with Lotus, Conjuer's Bauble to draw deck, Meddling Mages naming a bunch of stuff and DIMIR GUILDMAGE for the win. The card works like this: Target opponent discards hand, then draws a card, then discards that card (while Austin has his library in his hand). Draw a card, discard a card, rinse repeat.

Go Austin!

My report to follow soon. (3-0-2, undefeated first three rounds, Draw into top 8).

My report:

The Gilded Claw: Piloted by Jeff Neilson

Round 1: Miguel Chio

Game 1: I kick Miguel in the Nuts with Nutz Draws and fatty beaters. ok. Turn 1 Crucible of Worlds, Vampiric for Strip Mine. I see Bob, Underground Seas, maybe Duress and Brainstorm.

Game 2: He leads with Swamp, Druess something good, Black Lotus, Cabal Therapy something else, Mesmeric Fiend a threat. Wastes and Crucibles appear as well, making my maindeck Bob Blocker (Mishra's Factory) kinda worthless. Doh! More Fiends, Bob's and Withered Wretches join the field, alla kicking me in the nuts.

Game 3: I Chalice for 2 turn 1. He has Force but no blue spell to pitch. After 3 turns or so, he realizes just how bad Chalice for 2 kicks him in the nuts.

Round 2: Webster playing Bob Tendrils

Game 1: I go first and keep a hand of Shop Shop Ingot Memnarch, Gilded Lotus, Trike maybe and Memory Jar. Good stuff. I lead with Shop, Ingot go. He Duresses me and sees that I have the nutz hand. I topdeck threat after threat and get a Welder and Trike on the field on the same turn (I think). He TimeTwisters into Dark Ritual and Duress x3, leaving him with no gas and me with beaters.

Game 2: I get early Sphere of Resistance out against him. Eventualy Sphere x2. He Tinkers for Colossus, which is >>> my lonely Mishra's Factory. I get my Mana Crypt out, and hope to ramp up to 8 mana so I can cast Duplicant. After taking 11 damage to the nuts, I topdeck Wasteland and dupe Colossus, then kick Webster in the nutz for 13 damage, winning the game.
Total games played:
Me: 10 Webster: 1
Total Matches:
Me: 5 Webster: 0

Round 3: Pyromasta playing Monored UbaStax
Game 1: He mulls to five and I don't.
Game 2: He keeps his original grip of 7 including juicy cards like Barbarian Ring, Goblin Welder, Chalice of the Void, Bazaar of Baghdad and such. I mull to a grip of 6 including LEYLINE OF THE VOID. I get an early Tinker, but because I suck at Magic sometimes, I go for Sundering Titan to take out his mountain and give a quick clock. I forgot that he had an active Welder on the field (I did too, and had another in hand, soon to join). He takes 14 to the nuts and we start playing Welder games when his Viashino Heretic hits the field. We play more Welder Tricks and I do eventually take 8 to the nuts. As two Barbarian Rings and 0 cards in the grave are his only real mana sources, he is forced to get beat by Welders that turn sideways to get in there, to kick Pyromasta in the Nutz.

Round 4: Vegetta2711
ID. Hey, I meet a "Name" player!

We play for fun, he wins game 1, I win game 2 and 3 (I think).

Round 5: Eirik Aune
ID. Team Vacaville has 2 players that are 2-2. Both need to win to MAYBE get in. Andy will get in if he wins, but Austin is still MAYBE. Andy and Christiaan Royers would have drawn. Christiaan conceeded to Andy because A) Andy wasn't going to conceed period. and B) Andy had better tie breakers (The best of the MAYBE get ins...). Christian would not move on regardless, but it was his decisian that decided if Andy would move on. Props to Christiaan. (Andy got pwned and won a pack of Magic Cards. Want em? )

Top 8: I face Austin Martinez piloting SlapJack 2k6
I tried to convince him to just straight up conceed to me, because I was confident enough in The Gilded Claw versus the pool of Top 8 decks, and he said he'd think about it. When it came down to it, he said "Maybe. But lets play it out kinda, and see".
I keep a hand that I shouldn't have (Mox, Waste, Ancestral Recall, Crucible, Vampiric Tutor and 2 useless cards without Shop Mana).
Game 1: He kicks me in the nuts with beats.
Game 2: He kicks me in the nuts by comboing off turn 3 after Forcing my decent turn 1 Chalice of 0 play.
He decides to not conceed to me and wants to win a mox.

Go Austin!

I told him later that if he wasn't interested in conceeding to me, even though I paid his way (He forgot to tell me that he had no money), bought his lunch, and lent him 100% of the cards in the deck, that he should SAY so. "Beat me, Bitch! I ain't conceeding to no one!" That would have influenced mulliganning decisions on my part. I told him that if he wins the Mox (or at least doesn't Scrubby McSuck like he did last tourney (Sirocco at Sorcery Speed anyone?) that I would be happy for him and SlapJack 2k6. Just don't scrub forgoddsakes!

Then Austin beats Vegetta 2711 and Eirik Aune for the win!

Lastly, for those interested, I finally figured out how to make a MySpace Music Profile.  LotusHead is actually my "Band".

Enjoy!

This tournament report KICKS ASS.  Pictures = KICK ASS.

I love people who post pictures, write out decklists, give matchup finals (like, this person pwned this person), and everything else this report has just for the benefit of people like me who enjoy reading them.  KICK ASS JOB.

I'm really sad to see Stax doing so poorly.  It's been that way since last Waterbury and the trend hasn't bucked.  I'm considering playing something different, although I haven't decided what yet.  It seems that I can't rely upon Workshop to give me busted hands anymore because everyone and their brother is running maindeck artifact bounce, and there's no solution to that outside of REB which they can just counter.  LaPlante voiced the same concern.  *SUPER-SIGH*  Anyway, the Orb of Dreams tech is sick.  Props to Stan Gin for also representing my Day 1 Richmond MD list -1 Cap +1 Resist Orb.  Maybe Resist Orbs were the reason he didn't win too.  Smile

We need more tournament reports like this one.  WELL DONE.

On the Norcat VIntage site in my sig, someone was kind enough to lemme know how to post pics (you need them "Hosted" somewhere, say on MySpace, then click on the Image Button, and insert the full URL for the hosted pic (right click on the pic in your "myspace" photos section, and copy and paste the URL inbetween the Image Quotes thingies. If it works, then it will show when you "Preview".

Austin versus Vegetta2711. Note Yawgmoth's Bargain and Yawgmoth's Will on Vegetta's side of the table. Austin got Pwned for storm of about 30 on turn 2.

(Uh, Austin never got a turn 1 with his 4 land, 1 Bauble, 1 Trinket Mage, 1 random card hand.)  Austin's sided in CHALICE OF THE VOIDS pwned Vegetta2711 games 2 and 3.  Chalices have been used in SlapJack builds as early as DAY 1 of Salvagers as seen in this report: http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=22217.0 Bomberman was a Canadian derivative of SlapJack, I believe.

I have been having fun with The Gilded Claw, but SlapJack 2K6 was thrown together about 2 weeks ago (maybe 3). Given that all 3 decks (Andy's Oath, Austin's SlapJack 2K6 and The Gilded Claw are all mine, deckchoices are limited.  I just hadn't played SlapJack 2K6 enough to know what it can and can't do. I work 65+ hours per week.

Lastly:
Austin's Mini Report:
Round 1: Austin gets pwned by Vegetta2711 from a late game Game 3 TimeTwister topdeck.

Round 2: Austin gets kicked in the nuts by teammate Andy Griswold's Oath Deck. Andy and Austin would have drawn to each other, but they both lost round 1.  Andy lost to Ichorid.dec from a hardcast Golgari Grave Troll. That got 11 counters on it.  AND Andy had Tormod's Crypt IN PLAY, PLUS 2 Force of Wills and 2 other blue cards.  Andy didn't read Grave Troll. Andy took it out on Austin.

Round 3: BYE! Austin is 1-2. Whoop de doo!

Round 4: Austin turns shit sideways and smashes Luis Scott-Vargas in the nuts 2-0.  Louis is a top player out here and Austin had to specifically hit Loius in his oversized lucksack to win. Beating Luis 2-0 SlapJack style gave Austin a boost of confidence.  He was now 2-2.

Round 5: Austin gets paired UP versrus Stan Gin who gets kicked in the nuts by beaters like Trinket Mage, Meddling Mage, Dark Confidant and Salvagers. 2-0.

Austin makes top 8.

Quarter Finals: Versus me: Austin kicks me in the nuts both games. Actually 3 games.

Semi Finals: Austin kicks Vegetta2711 in the nuts.

Finals: Austin kicks Eirik in the nuts on game three.

QND Tourney Report, this is pretty hazy, so if anyone wants to add details, feel free.

RD1 - Salvagers Slapjack 2K6, kind of like the Canuck kind (Austin)
Game 1: I go off turn 3 w/ Bargain and fuck up by going down to 1 life which turns off CoB. Sad face. I was too narrow minded in looking for Yawg's Will, I should've instead just tapped out and went down to 1 off city of brass and cast Mind's Desire for 8. Instead I pass the turn and die to trinket mage and guildmage beatings.

Game 2: Something somthing make homer cast will.

Game 3: Fighting through some counters and a Crypt on the other side, I stall out and just keep praying I hit something off Dark Confidant draws. He keeps looking for Salvagers to combo off. The turn before he would go off, I find Timetwister. Down comes TT, up comes Tutor into Tendrils. Kick to nuts FTW!

Round 2 - CS (Sean)
Game 1: I duress him and take his only relevant card. I combo out on turn 3 with tutors + Will.

Game 2: Down comes Tormod's Crypt backed by counters. Meanwhile I set-up a turn 3 Desire for 6-7 off a Imperial Seal -> Lotus and a few random moxen in hand. I end up hitting like 4 mana sources, grim tutor, bob and brainstorm. I'm one short of Tendrils mana (Storm already @ 10) for the game winner, so I just set-up a win next turn. He draws nothing relevant, I do a fun tutor chain, cast Hurkyll's to build up enough storm and cast Tendrils for 20.

Round 3 - Gifts (Eirik)
Game 1: He mulls to 6 and I play turn 1 Bob. He burning Wishes for a Duress and sees that my hand is basically all buisness and takes Bargain. I soon overwhelm his remaining counterwall (Like 1 FoW. Woo), Cast Timetwister and resolve Grim Tutor into Yawg's Will. Pain ensues.

Game 2: He mulls to 6 and passes the turn. Ouch. I play turn 1 Duress and Bob off ritual. He draws land and gets his own bob out. I keep beating down to press my temporary mana and card advantage. I drop a second bob a few turns later. I end up forcing through Will eventually and win the prize.

Round 4 - Gilded Claw (Jeff, Lotushead)
We I.D. - we play a few games for kicks. I win game 1 after getting capped for Tendrils and two of my bobs (I figurerd I lost, I was playing for fun) through a series of tutors for the final bob, Time walk, then drawing chain of vapor and H. Recall.

The last turn, which was sort of funny, went something like this.
Jeff: Yay, finally hit 4 mana! Juggernaut! Go.
Me: EOT, chain of vapor one of my two confidants (We're both at two life)
Me: Upkeep, Brainstorm, put land on top. Main phase cast H. Recall targeting you, swing for the win!

Games 2 & 3 he smashes me with Chalice + Wasteland + Trinisphere beatings. Some combination of the two anyway.

Round 5 I.D.

Top 8: Oath (Andy)
Game 1: Out comes turn 1 Bob and I then resolve a turn 2 Tinker into Memory Jar. Turn 3 comes and I cast dubs ritual, sac jar and that's all she wrote.

Game 2: I play two bobs within the first two turns and attempt to beatdown. After getting him to eight, he resolves Oath, Crypt and Bob damage is slowly killing me. I swing and knock him down to 8 and bounce his Oath w/ CoV. My hand is full of good stuff that'll let me combo out as soon as Andy replays Oath.

He instead plays Arcane Lab and passes the turn. I fall to 6 from more bob pain and knock Andy down to 4. I tutor for H. Recall in an attempt to bounce my own Crypt, since I have a bunch of high cost spells in hand so Brainstorm doesn't look as attractive. He counters H. Recall though. So on the last turn, I lose the Crypt roll, drop to 3 and reveal...

Lotus Petal
Duress

Neat. Swing for 4, win.

For note, I did beat Austin and Erirk in the swiss. Wink Though yeah, other than the demolishing game 1, I got fucking kolded in the rematch.

My Top 4 match went something like this.
Game 1: Pissed off that I couldn't get a 4 way split (heh, thx for nothing d00ds) and actually make it to work on time, I channel my frustration and anger into my deck. As a result.. .it gives me something retarded like Gemstone Mine, Ritual, Lotus, Mox, Bargain, Dark Confidant and Brainstorm. I ended up casting Dark Confidant and Time Walk. Next turn I end up casting Bargain, throw down like 10 cards, cast Yawg's Will and then Tendrils with like 15-16 storm (I could've gone up higher, but I wanted to end the game sometime this year).
Game 2 was ouch for me. I keep a questionable hand which really wasn't great other than Bobs. Then Austin was like, ;hi, i play chalice and meddling mage. your deck doesn't like those cards. kthxdie'.
Game 3 was actually intresting, I played turn 1 Xantid Swarm, turn 2 Tinker -> DSC, turn 3 swing for 11.

Sadly for me Austin played Trinket Mage off Island, Ancient Tomb and grabbed Aether Spellbomb. The turn I swung for 11, I was hoping I'd draw into any mana source to allow me to Grim Tutor for and cast Duress (I had a land and mox out w/ cabal ritual in hand), Duress or Time Walk also would've been winnars. Sadly I can't draw a mana source or one of said broken cards and DSC goes bye bye. There goes my gambit.I lose shortly after, since I can't set anything up with two near depleted Gemstone Mine.

So close and yet so far. I'll edit in a full QnD report later.

Props:
Austin, for being the only one to take a game from me the entire tourney and then winning the thing. Congrats!
Albert (Pyromasta) for loaning me literally the entire deck
Bob, he's soooo good in Grim decks.
Shane, for playing out his last 3 matches and ending up 3-2.
Pat Lam, for letting the Jeremy make it in.
Jeff, for being awesome and taking pics of everything.
Pro Stars for running a smooth tourney

Slops:
Me for making a terrible mistake in the first game of the damn tourney.
Not being able to make a T4 split. Whatever, way to make us lose cash. ;P
Salvagers, who runs Trinket Mage, Chalice AND Meddling Mage?!? (Ok so I'm still peeved by that. ;P )

Great report, but it looks like the winning deck was 55 cards.

The Ancient Tomb tech is for powering out Trinket Mages and was a topdeck. Smile It also works nicedly with Engineered Explosives in a possible Chalice Saturated Meta.

After I chewed Austin's ass off for being wishy washy about the Conceed to me thing, and smashing Luis and Stan, and me, get got kinda gung ho.  It was pretty clear that the only split was gonna be Austin getting the Mox and the rest of top 4 getting the other stuff. He pulled it off tho!

I edited the SlapJack 2K6 list.  It was missing 3 Underground Seas and 2 Tundras.  The lists went up REAL fast and there have been mistakes in the past. The Rewind in the board is fixed too.

I'm really sad to see Stax doing so poorly.  It's been that way since last Waterbury and the trend hasn't bucked.

I played Ubastax and managed to get matched up with Shop Aggro/Gilded Claw (LotusHead), Ichorid, and Oath.  I didn't win a game all day, but I _DID_ mulligan a total of 8 times in 6 games.  Props to Josh(Veggies) for putting up some numbers, though.  Way to put money where your mouth is, bro.

Also, that's me in the background of the pic playing Mental Magic in red sleeves.  Props to Memory Jar and Bargain for being retarded in Mental.

Great report Jeff.

I finally have the meta stuff 90% done on the norcal forums.

Big grats to Austin for the win, and grats to the others who did well as well

Good to see you in top 4 Josh, bit better than the outing with belcher a few weeks back, heh

Stax didnt do well because few good players played/play it out here right now(cept pyro and stan, heh) If Kevin and I played it (which would require us to actually show up all the time which is impossible with my current schedual), and maybe brent played it again and a few others or something it would be showing better numbers out here (although the meta report shows Stax still kinda plugging along this year for us out here)

anywhoo...thanks for the report jeff...and grats to all of team vacaville actually who have been playing some great T1 lately.
