If I equip Riptide Mangler with a BoneSplitter (gives +2/+0) or enchant with Unholy Strength (give +2/+1) or even give it a +1/+1 counter (by say, Graft), can I use its ability to target itself, thus improving its unmodified power?

Example: it is 0/3, then I equip with Bonsplitter making it a 2/3. I pay 1U, targeting itself to make its power 2, then its bonesplitter bonus ramps it up to a 4/3.

Riptide Mangler 1U
Creature-  Beast
0/3
Casting cost: 1U

Oracle text: 1U: Change Riptide Mangler’s power to target creature’s power. (It doesn’t change back at end of turn.)

Intuition tells me that I can do this (and have an uber cool guy), but I am not sure.

To make it 4/3 after using its ability, you need to move the bonesplitter to another creature , and then move it again to the riptide.
If you have another creature and enough mana it would work.

Not working with +1/+1 counters or enchantments (unless enchantment is bounced and replayed).

I hope the questions to the judge are clear enough to understand how it works.

That Ask the Judge is out of date. The original post is correct.

Lotushead,

I had used mangler in combination with pemmins aura in a casual mono blue deck I played with. It makes the mangler into a ghetto morphling, that can do all the same tricks u said, although you have to pay to pump/change it's power. But it gives it flying and untargetabilty and untap.Hot!

I remember playing a mistform mask on someones DSC. Them letting it resolve and me making that bad ass a wall every turn... Fun times
