First off, I would like to say that the RIW Power weekend was AMAZING.  The event was extremely well run, Pam and Judge Dave did an excellent job at making sure things we fun and handled well.  I had a great time chilling with everybody who showed up, and playing some great games of Type one.

Secondly I would like to state that, excluding the two intentional draws I opted to take, in matches I played this weekend over the course of both the power nine event and the Alpha Starter event I was an astounding

11-1-1

Busted.

I played the same list of good old Burning Slaver both days.

Burning Slaver

4 Thirst for Knowledge
4 Brianstorm
4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
3 Goblin Welder
2 Gorilla Shaman
1 Mindslaver
1 Duplicant
1 Sundering Titan
1 Crucible of Worlds
1 Gifts Ungiven
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker
1 Echoing Truth
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Yawgmoths Will
1 Burning Wish
1 Recoup
4 Volcanic Island
2 Underground Sea
2 Island
1 Snow Covered Island
2 Polluted Delta
2 Flooded Strand
1 Tolerian Academy
1 Darksteel Citadel
1 Strip Mine
5 Mox
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Vault
1 Mana Crypt
1 Black Lotus

This is just a brief off the cuff report, grammar is being disregarded to make way for speed.

Tournament 1 Power Eight Saturday

We ended up getting 59 people for this event, which is quite a bit for a Michiagn tournament.  I'm going to try and keep the details brief, and to the point.

Round 1

Alana with Gifts Oath

First off, I'd like to say that Alana is a real joy to play against.  She is just so pleasant to play against.  Anyways

Game one:

I win the die roll, and keep a hand that Mysticals for Ancestral and protects it turn two with force of Will.  It works.  She Forces my Recall and I force back.  I hit a Mox, E truth and have some counterspells to back it up.  She drops Oath and I let it resolve.  I untap and Pass.  She makes an Akroma and attacks me to 14, and on her end step I bounce Akroma with Drain back up for her Drain.  I untap Thirst and she doesn't have anything else to do.  Eventually she decides to go for it, and Oaths her Library and attempts a Krosan Rec, but by this time I have enough countermagic to make sure that never happens and she dies on her own draw step.

Game two:

I bring in Duresses, Rebs, Truth, Crypt

I keep a very bad hand and try to mise/

Mox Jet
Force of Will
Force of Will
Thirst for Knowledge
Tinker
Brainstorm
Mana Drain

on the draw.

I draw Slaver and discard it on my first turn.  THe next turn I draw Duress, she Vamps in response and I take a Merchant Scroll.  I note that she doesn't have much left

She untaps and casts oath with an Orchard.  I force.  I draw Recall and beat with some tokens.  Long story short eventualy I hit an Island Tinker for an unimprinted Duplicant and beat down.  Risky move on my part, but she didn't have a very gassy start.

Round two
Random Agro

I don't have much to say about this round, and even if I did, it wouldn't really be worth listening to.  My opponent missed several key opportunities including an on board kill game two.  I win the match in two games.

Round 3 Pacman playing Stax

Game one I get off a turn two Gifts and get
Welder
Shaman
COW
Recall

He gives me Welder and Shaman.  I play them both and he Balances them away.

After the balance our respective boards are me with a mox Ruby, and him wiith three moxes.  I peel Welder.  He peels nothing.  I peel another Welder and play it, and then Weld in his Null Rod.  Eventually I weld in my Cow and just win.

Game two is a random blow out with me using a G shaman to destroy his board.

Roudn four
Paul Fishalo with UWB Fish

We ID

Round 5
I have no recollection of this round.

Round 6  Mark Trogden playing STAX

Game one he owns me with a combinatoin of Smokestack, Tangle Wire and Welder.  I just can't seem to play out of those three cards for some reason.  Bad beats.

Game two I smash him and slaver lock him.  Solem Similcarum fetches out three Islands and draws me about six cards over the course of the match.

Game three is very dumb.  I have busted Mana, Brainstorm and a Fetch and Find NOTHing to answer a Turn two Juggernaut.  he beats me to three before I peel a Duplicant and hardcast it.  I start beating him down and apparently he has nothing.  I am lethal on the last turn of turns, but just before that he peels Rack and Ruin and Kills my guy.  It was the biggest nothingfest, mise for the not lose at the last second I've ever seen.

I make a mistake here by not scooping Mark in.  Mark is a nice guy who always seems to do well against me.  Since I had the best tiebreakers in the event, I could have just scooped him in, since I would still need to win in the sxith round.

Round 7

Arend, Playing CS

Savage Match.  I really can't even describe how intensely in the trenches this match was.  it was dominated by Welder Wars, Shamans, and Crypts.  It was one for the ages.  Anybody who saw it got a real treat.  That is all I'm going to say about this one.

I ended up winning two very closely contested games.

Final Record after the Swiss.

5-0=2

TOP EIGHT

Round one against John Wilkerson playing Ichorid.

Game one

I force of Will his turn one Crop Rotation and he can't put on any early game pressure.  I have a Shaman that eats a Chalice.  I end up making a bunch of Mana Early with Academy and Burning WIshing for Deep and Drawing infinite Cards.  It all ends with a Slaver Lock and a lot of Dredging.

Game two is a Joke.  John Breakthroughs and I can't stop it.  He Dredges Four Grave Trolls and hits exactly zero Ichorids or Ashen Ghouls.  In spite of his bad luck, My luck is very good.  I have the stone cold nuts and Draw every good card in my deck and Kill him with a Titan.

WINS

ROUND TWO
JR GOLDMEN playing Bomberman

Game one

I keep a very sketchy hand with lots off non blue mana and one Volc.  I never actually get Drain online and he smokes me. From the sidelines Mark Biller laughs at me and I shrug my shoulders and shuffle up for game two.

Game two

I Crypt away his Lotus early, and then Duress him.  His hand is three Salvagers and a land.  He plays a bunch of two four Idiots and starts beating me down.  I have a welder, and to his dismay I find Duplicant at the last possible second and wreck his team

Game three.  THis game is kind of a blur to me.  We both have the worst hands ever.  I end up beating him down for twenty damage with two Goblin welders that are needled.  apparently both of our hands we just terrible.

Finals

I scoop to my friend paul, because he needs the louts for Gencon
I take the recall, it is really minty.

DAY TWO

same deck same place

Round one
John Wilkerson playing Ichorid

More rough beats for Jono.  I end up beating him in two again.  We have fun whistling the Star Wars theme while we play, and tormenting Judge Dave with questions about Uba Mask and BOB.  I get it done in two.  I won't lie, I did some mising.

ROUND TWO

FRANK SOMETHINGOROTHER playing Belcher

There was so much mising involve on his part in this match that it is beyond belief.  I don't even want to talk about it.  He kills me on his turn two, on the play, game one with a mull to five.  Game two he mises a second Ritual off a chromatic sphere to cast Bargain.  boo, i lost

Round Three

Fish.  I can't recall much about htis match up.  but I won

Round 4

Lyle from Meandeck playing Slaver

Game one

Shaman rocked Lyles world.  Hard, really hard.

Game two.  I do my normal board plan.  Get an eerie feeling in my stomach.  Pull my cards back out and replace the third Welder with Shattering Spree.  I end up being totally mana Screwed, because Lyle Duresses away my turn one Brainstorm.  On about turn six I am outmanaed 12 to two.  Lyle Thirsts and hardcasts a Slaver he can't activate that turn while my Drain mana is down.  I untap and Shattering Spree it.  Eventually I draw back into the game and have a hand full of saucy gas.  I always seem to have force of WIll when i need it.

Round five

ID with Fishalo.

TOP EIGHT

I play Jeremy from Canada with UG aggro threshold

Game one is a Joke.  Welder Dups counterspells, Will GG.

Game two is a joke.  I draw less than nothing.  and get run over.

Game three is a joke.  He has a wall of Mongooses.  I have Duplicant, Dubs Welder and Solem Similacrum.  I draw my deck.  Cast Will.  WIn the game.

Top 4

Pacman Kris Taylor playing anti Slaver Stax

Game one I make a bad Gifts pile and get killed because of my own stupidity and arrogance.  I gamble on top decking a mana source and don't.  I forgot about the ROLLING EARTHQAKE in my board that would have limated his three one ones.

Game two

Pac makes some very costly mistakes and ends up punting the game away, when I was all but dead on board.

Game three.  I Lotus into Shattering Spree away his entire board, followed by a TFK into the stone cold nuts of Recall Strip COW.

I split the Starter with a friend, and end up cashing out my half of the starter for money.

NOT A BAD WEEKEND

Anyways, thanks to everybody who came out and played.  I had a blast and it was good to see everybody.  I haven't really played a vintage event since I broke my arm a few months ago, and it was really good to get back into the swing of things right before Gencon.

Hopefully, I'll see everyone at Gencon.  After having so much fun playing this weekend I'm almost positive I'll make it out to the event.  After winning both events, my boss was actually out looking for people to cover my shifts, without my having asked her to, so that I could play at worlds.  So, here's to hoping.

Props

Paul Nicolo:  way to play like a champ.  I'll put you in my props, even though you are a tool and didn't put me in yours (after I CONCEEDED to you and gave you a LOTUS)
JR GOLDMEN:  our match was dumb, but it was fun to see you again.  I really hope you start coming to the monthly events.
Pam  who is without a doubt the best thing to happen to Michigan MTG EVER.  thanks for putting on a great event.
MR TYPE 4:  WE DIDN't Even get to play!!!!  Next time, it is on.
Mr Jalaughison:  and john wilkerson are my heros

SLOPS

Phil Cape for being completely incoherent by four am
and also

hot dogs for being gross.

cheers,
ffy

I can't believe I made that play error... Bah... I also can't believe the judge ruled the way he did regarding mana drain in your round with Jeremy.  Skipping main phases?  PFFTTT!!!

All and all, I was very happy with the way my build ran on day 2.

Thanks for everyone that came out.  These people include and are not limited to:

Good ol' Mr. Type 4 (PS: Go Pittsburgh!!)
Arend
Alana
Droba
Guys from Cleveland
Joel from Oregon (Sorry about that call dude...)

Just wondering why you played the old list, instead of that new jar-abusing list you got? Smile

Grats on winning anyways!

Yeah Pac, those were some crazy round 1 shenanigans we had... grats to DeMars and everyone who made top 8, including JR, who wtfpwned the waitress after the alpha starter at Outback. She had an obvious knack for being too personal.

I agree that the judging was poor on Sunday, in round one the judge explained to the guy next to me that Belcher could hit you for Infinite damage if you had no land in your deck. The belcher player "just chooses the damage."

Ah, kids.

Props to Pam and the judges for putting on a very nice event(s).

Wow! I come out of retirement specifically for this event...i play virtually rust-free magic.....finish in the top 4 (i woulda won the darn thing if i didnt get matched up with mono U control !grrr),and i still get diss'd. Ah well...whatever.I earned my way into the top4,then lost to a hard-cast DSC in BOTH games! I'll die to that any day. He was scratching and clawing for any path to victory he could find...as was I (swinging with ESG's! lol.). I actually got a Xantid Swarm on the table ,and woulda owned if i could have drawn ANYTHING in those several critical turns! Attacking with a Xantid Swarm and running it into a freshly cast Morphling, then casting Balance (efectively an armageddon AND WOG,was fun though. He never saw that coming! Icould have made it a Mind Twist also by sacing my LED in response, but i had a Belcher AND Tendrils in my hand,so i chose not to. That bought me several key turns, but his COTV set @ 0 made it difficult for me to play anything. I never drew Hurkyl's OR the Edict i boarded in. So much for "mising".

Frank, Dan... What's the difference?

Sorry, about that. I didn't take any match notes on Sunday.

FFy,

Your finish for this tournament was stellar, what a great record! I may have to change my vote for Rich Shay to win Gencon after reading this threat. Seriously, you pull off some great finishes with your skill. Great job.

Was the old school list because you didn't feel confident in your new 2 welder-Jar version? By lack of confidence I mean not enough testing with the newer list yet. Or was it more than a metagame call? I'd like to see what you had to say about moving back to your older version. Didn't you miss the colossus to tinker for?

Good job and good luck at Gencon!

The Jar list is clearly more broken.  It does things that should just never happen when you are playing a Drain deck.  However, it has much more difficulty playing around random hate like Tormod's Crypt, Chalice, and Null Rod.

Regular Slaver is just so Savage at dodging and playing through random hate in a ten round tournament, that I just felt it was a better choice.

Congrats Brian. The only thing keeping you from winning the P8 was the words, "I concede" coming out of your mouth. I watched your match vs J.R. in the semi's, that was a great match!
