I have been playing vintage for a couple years now and was around before Tog decks dominated everything.  I however was never a fan of playing the popular deck and have never had the urge to play Tog until now.  Instead of going with the traditional GAT build, as many people view it as less than tier 1, I have decided to look at other ways to make a potentially good Tog deck.  I decided to use the Izzet Guildmage to help my toothy friend out.

Here then is my decklist and some explanations:

The Tap Dancing Pimp

Creatures(7):

4x Izzet Guildmage
3x Psychatog

Broken(6):

1x Ancestral recall
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Fact or Fiction (not sure if it should be replaced with Gifts or multiple gifts)
1x Time Walk (pretty much game over with either creature on the board)
1x Wheel of Fortune (Very good in concept, testing has mixed results)
1x Frantic Search (underplayed in TOG IMO)
1x Burning Wish

Counters(14):

4x Force of Will
4x Duress
4x Mana Drain
2x Mana Leak (possibly go 4 Leak and 2 Drains?)

Other spells(9):
4x Brainstorm
2x Deep Analysis
2x Cunning Wish
1x Mystical Tutor

Mana Sources(23):
1x Black Lotus
1x Mox Jot
1x Mox Ruby
1x Mox Sapphire
1x Sol Ring
1x Mana Vault

2x Bloodstained Mire
2x Flooded Strand
1x Island
3x Polluted Delta
1x Tolarian Academy
4x Underground Sea
4x Volcanic Island

SB(15)
1x Repeal
1x Reckless Charge
1x Yawgmoth's Will
1x Blue Elemental Blast
1x Misdirection
3x Red Elemental Blast
1x Recoil
1x Echoing Truth
2x Gorilla Shaman
3x Goblin Vandal

This list is far from perfect, but when it works, it is very fun to play.  The Biggest problem I have run into is Mana Denial.  This means that most Oath builds, and many Stax builds have a very good match up against this deck.

Some alternative cards:

Dark Confidant: Good draw engine, doesn't pitch to FoW, can help with mini-beats.

Intuition/Accumulated Knowledge: Great engine, unfortunately I'm having trouble fitting it in.

Tinker/DSC: With lot's of artifacts and brainstorms, it seems like it could support another win condition, and with Tog and Guildmage once you draw time walk you pretty much have won the game.  (I once had 7 turns in a row, although they weren't all needed, against an unsuspecting combo player).

Crucible of Worlds: Helps the matchups that hurt me the most, also works well with tinker should I use it.

Please help me out, thanks Smile

A few comments:

The Intuition/AK rocks in both Izzet Control and any Tog build.  AK costs 2 so it can be abused with the guildmage and the whole draw engine's inefficiency works well with Tog.

Personally, I would pull the Wheel, Frantic Search, 2x Deep Analysis, and 2x Mana Leak  for 2x Intuition, 4x AK.

You really aren't running that many artifacts.  I'd say either add more moxen or drop the Academy, possibly swapping it with a LoA.  With Intuition+AK+Izzet you can overflow your hand easily and frequently and the Library will make that even better.

If you aren't running Tinker, go Merchant Scroll over Mystical.  Merchant Scroll will get very nearly everything you could ever want (aside from Walk and Will), it puts it right in your hand now, and it can be abused with Izzet.  Having both Scroll and Mystical isn't a wrong, but Mystical without Scroll in this deck is a bad idea.

Um...why is Will in the wishboard?  Yes, Burning Wish is a decent call - it can get back stuff that Tog removes and can be abused with Izzet,, but is there a specific reason why Will is not main?

7 fetchers is a lot - this deck needs a fairly large amount of real lands.  I can't say to swap any out without playtesting the deck, but keep an eye on this balance.

Also, there's no reason at all not to throw in a single Reset, either mainboard or wishboard.  Going infinite is good Wink

Fling is probably a good fit for the board as well.  It serves the same purpose as Berserk did in traditional builds.  It means you can win with a 10/11 tog, cunning wish, and 5 mana.  Which sounds like alot, but is easier than getting a 20 dmg tog in my oppinion.

Frantic Search isnt played often because 1. it is restricted, so it is not very reliable. 2. it gives you less cards than you started with, and with tog that is really bad 3. it is a little high in CC, so its not worth the slot.

i suggest you just cut it. Fling is good, it allows you to get by creatures and also hit them with tog twice, so you only need to pump him to a 10/10 and its game. Fling is never expected, so when your opponent thinks you can only get tog to a 9/9 and decides not to block, you then flick Tog in his face, costing him the game.
