I have been playing vintage for a couple years now and was around before Tog decks dominated everything. I however was never a fan of playing the popular deck and have never had the urge to play Tog until now. Instead of going with the traditional GAT build, as many people view it as less than tier 1, I have decided to look at other ways to make a potentially good Tog deck. I decided to use the Izzet Guildmage to help my toothy friend out.
Here then is my decklist and some explanations:
The Tap Dancing Pimp
Creatures(7):
4x Izzet Guildmage
3x Psychatog
Broken(6):
1x Ancestral recall
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Fact or Fiction (not sure if it should be replaced with Gifts or multiple gifts)
1x Time Walk (pretty much game over with either creature on the board)
1x Wheel of Fortune (Very good in concept, testing has mixed results)
1x Frantic Search (underplayed in TOG IMO)
1x Burning Wish
Counters(14):
4x Force of Will
4x Duress
4x Mana Drain
2x Mana Leak (possibly go 4 Leak and 2 Drains?)
Other spells(9):
4x Brainstorm
2x Deep Analysis
2x Cunning Wish
1x Mystical Tutor
Mana Sources(23):
1x Black Lotus
1x Mox Jot
1x Mox Ruby
1x Mox Sapphire
1x Sol Ring
1x Mana Vault
2x Bloodstained Mire
2x Flooded Strand
1x Island
3x Polluted Delta
1x Tolarian Academy
4x Underground Sea
4x Volcanic Island
SB(15)
1x Repeal
1x Reckless Charge
1x Yawgmoth's Will
1x Blue Elemental Blast
1x Misdirection
3x Red Elemental Blast
1x Recoil
1x Echoing Truth
2x Gorilla Shaman
3x Goblin Vandal
This list is far from perfect, but when it works, it is very fun to play. The Biggest problem I have run into is Mana Denial. This means that most Oath builds, and many Stax builds have a very good match up against this deck.
Some alternative cards:
Dark Confidant: Good draw engine, doesn't pitch to FoW, can help with mini-beats.
Intuition/Accumulated Knowledge: Great engine, unfortunately I'm having trouble fitting it in.
Tinker/DSC: With lot's of artifacts and brainstorms, it seems like it could support another win condition, and with Tog and Guildmage once you draw time walk you pretty much have won the game. (I once had 7 turns in a row, although they weren't all needed, against an unsuspecting combo player).
Crucible of Worlds: Helps the matchups that hurt me the most, also works well with tinker should I use it.
Please help me out, thanks
