Sorry Nazdakka, I'll be personally cheering for a friend and former roommate.

He let me know on Friday that he got an e-mail, I checked my inbox, nothing.  I told him he probably would be on his own (since we were both eager to get to round 2 after round 1).  My guess is that they allowed 1 or 2 wrong answers on the questions, and that's it.  I mean if they're in the semi-finals right now, there can't be that many people left (meaning that the cutoff would have had to have been pretty high, some of the questions were down right easy, some were workable after some thought, and some were obviously harder than they looked [and some may have been easier than they looked, a possible reason I'm not in]).

What would be interesting is to be "introduced" to the competitors at some point on the official Wizards site, along with articles from MaRo about what the current challenge to them is and their answers and justifications (ya know, like Reality TV, since thats kinda where the inspiration for this is from).

I've submitted my card designs for the Semifinal Round. I was pretty confidant I would advance in rounds one and two, but this round I'm not so sure. The cards I submitted were good and well-designed, but not great. They were all pretty average cards.

At the end of his article yesterday, MaRo said that you had to get 30 of the 35 questions correct to advance. 136 people did, but no one got a perfect score and every top scorer missed different questions.

So, Parallax, Nazdakka, either of you hear back on your card designs yet?

No. They said it would take a few weeks, so I still have my fingers crossed. They're starting to cramp, though.

This is all so fascinating...I hope a TMD'er wins the whole thing--that would be so awesome!

Plus, having someone on the inside could be quite...advantageous.

I was in a huge rush to do the design round, and my cards were total crap.  Oh well.

Yeah, my cards weren't that great. It's a lot harder to design cards on a deadline.

Quote from: MaRo
Hey everyone,

You guys seem eager for news so I've decided to drop you a note that there isn't news yet. We're currently in the middle of the second pass on the Round Three card designs. 68 people are still in the running. That number is up from 66 because I seem incapable of counting.

After this second pass, there will be a third pass that looks at all three tests together. And after that pass, we'll narrow down to the "game show contestants". I expect that number to be between 10 and 12 although we're willing to be flexible if things clump differently.

Once the show starts, here's what's going to happen. Each week I'll give an assignment and then the following week, I'll eliminate one or more applicants. We do this until we get to three, at which point we do an interview with each. All of this should happen in time for the intern to start the job in January. The show itself begins in October.

In a couple weeks we'll be allowing the public to take the multiple choice test. And yes, it will have the answers with explanation by yours truly. In addition I will be revealing to the public the other tests and explaining what we were looking for.

I'm sorry this wave is taking so long but it involves multiple judges all being very thorough. Finally, we are planning to send a letter to all 136 people who turned in the card test with a thumbs up or thumbs down answer. (Yes, the last person did take the test - a little technical problem on our end.)

I'm very excited for the show to start and I think we're going to have a great group of candidates.

That's all I got for now. I'll give you another update when I have something to share.

Sincerely,

Mark Rosewater

Well it helps if you keep a card design book (as well as from a "practice makes 'better' " standpoint) to either see if you've designed anything earlier to draw inspiration from or see if there's overlap from a previous card you designed...

All my card designs get posted here. I didn't want to copy anything directly that was posted here for fear of disqualification.

Alright, that's an extremely valid reason not to want to try and either cut and paste or to draw inspiration from something you've done already since there's a possible DQ involved.

The full test is up - looks like I scored 28-29 and so missed out by a smidgen.

28 here. I notice that some of the questions have more than one correct answer, even when they ask for "the most likely" of something.

I haven't heard anything yet, and even the cuts are supposed to be getting an email, so I don't know.

Also, I scored 31.

I got 34. It's a damn shame I don't live in the US.

The one I got wrong was "linear mechanic" -- I must have missed MaRo's article about it (Google didn't turn it up, either), and went by the dictionary definition, which was "output proportional to the input". Based on this, I picked Threshold, because while the rest all provide progressively more output given increasing amounts of input, Threshold is just completely arbitrary. (As it turns out, MaRo's definition is entirely different. Oh well.)

At least I now know the proper term for what R&D should do and have done a whole lot less of.

Hey don't feel bad.  I apparently forgot everything about Magic for a period of 2 hours, and misread 5 or so questions.  19...

I didn't make it, which I expected.  My cards were embarassingly bad.  The day the card designs were due was the day I had to submit grades for the summer quarter of the school where I teach.  Marking 100 final exams and 100 final projects doesn't leave much time for card designing.

I posted three of the cards I submitted to the Design Challenge:
Half-Thawed Tundra as a rare land.
Ensnared Golem as a rare artifact.
Minotaur Hypnotist as a common creature.

Unfortunately, my other three cards were pretty bad. Not exactly the type of awesome innovation they were looking for.
