I once asked a Telemarketer if he was a Computer Program. 3 Times.
On the fourth time, he/she/it said he was NOT a computer program, and again began it's speal of whatever it wanted to sell me.
I hung up, laughing.

I almost feel bad because the guy is just doing his job, but he did choose a job that's sole goal is to scam/sell or otherwise annoy random people, so I don't really.

I personally have no sympathy for Telemarketers at all. I think if you choose to make a living in that way, you deserve all that abuse that comes with it.

In the range of shitty jobs:
Crack Whore > Telemarketer > Coal Miner
Now I've held a lot of really awful jobs in high school and college, but nothing sucked harder than the 45 minutes I was a telemarketer.
Around the 20 minute mark, my mind was loudly saying: "Dude, you are not cut out for this." But I really needed a job so I stuggled through it for another 20 minutes or so before I got up and walked over to the floor supervisor and said the job sucked and I was quitting. She started on so speech on how I'd "never make it in marketing" or some such and then I just turned around and walked out the door.
A month later I got a check for $4.50 that I just threw in the garbage. 'Best to walk away from that shit and not look back.
In short: holy hell does telemarketing suck the hairy nut. If that experience was enough to make him quit his job, he should be thanking that guy.

She started on so speech on how I'd "never make it in marketing" or some such and then I just turned around and walked out the door. That's the opportune time to reply with "Yeah, I know. That's why I'm leaving to go get a real job." Now I've held a lot of really awful jobs in high school and college, but nothing sucked harder than the 45 minutes I was a telemarketer. The emphasis on 45 minutes amuses me. It's like you're a character on Family Guy or something.

That's the opportune time to reply with "Yeah, I know. That's why I'm leaving to go get a real job." Yeah, but by that point I was in full-on, " I need to get the fuck out of here now" mode. There was no time to belabor the point.

"Yeah, I'm not cut out for fooling people into believing they need what I'm marketing/selling" may have been a good rejoinder, but wanting to get the hell out can be a powerful motivation .

I suffered through three months of tech/sales for bellsouth before preventing my own suicide and quitting. And that was when customers were calling me. I can't fathom the abuse the other way around.

I hate it when they don't immediately identify themselves as telemarketeers. Sometimes, they fool me into thinking I'm NOT talking to pond scum for 5 or 10 seconds or so. I have recently resorted to threatening these guys. I wonder if they'll sue me.

My disdain for telemarketing should be pretty clear, but even worse than real people are autodailers with a voice recording. I've even received a few that are even interactive and respond differently depending on what you say, but are just driven by software. How degrading to be that computer. I'd rather host midget tranny porn, given the choice.
