I recently played in my first Peasant tournament, and it was a blast.  Players that do not normally entered tournaments due to lack of cards or intimidation (only a $3 entry fee) showed up.  While it was a small group, it still ended up grabbing about 75% of the players that were present that night.  If you are looking for an alternative FNM event to get more people palying in a tournament, I strongly recommend trying to get a Peasant tournament going.  For those interested, my report, albeit brief can be found here:

Perhaps I am behind the times, but what are the format rules for Peasant?

Point of clarification: I believe he means Relentless Rats, not Ravenous (not that being able to run 5 Ravenous Rats would make a huge difference...).

Here is a link to the "official" Peasant Magic rules, which includes a banned list: http://www.geocities.com/peasantmagic/rules.htm

One notable change from that website is the ruling that, although Strip Mine has had a common version printed, it will be treated as uncommon for this format.

The cards that have been banned are: prohibitively expensive for most people, format disrupting, or were printed in sets that didn't have rares (but the cards in question would have been considered as such).

For convenience, here is the banned list from that site:
Jeweled Bird   Timmerian Fiends
Bronze Tablet   Brain Freeze
Ali From Cairo   Bazaar of Baghdad
Berserk   Candelabra of Tawnos
Diamond Valley   Juzam Djinn
Library of Alexandria   Mana Drain

We've been hosting Peasant tournaments for the last 2 years in Paris. In the end, the format is terrible, since if you want to win you either have to play Suicide or Tendrils decks (that is, Combo or anti-Combo). Aggro and Control are not viable in Peasant because of these two archetypes.
