Our last tournament had 35 players. The buzz was overwhelmingly positive due to the fun everyone had, the increase in prize support, and the energy in the format as we lead up to Grand Prix Columbus.
Unfortunately, Jan. 21 was not a good day in Columbus. We got destroyed by snow and the streets were awful. I live a seven minute drive or so from the tournament site, but the six inches of snow we got last night made it a 40 minute drive.
Unsurprisingly, I recieved calls from teammates around the state that they would not make the trip: Doug Linn, Mike Bomholt, Paul Mastriano (type 4).
By 1:15 we had 9 people registered in the tournament, enough to run a sanctioned event.
Despite the low turnout, Kent, the tournament organizer and owner of the Soldiery, gave out the guaranteed minimum prize support of $200: $120 to first or 4 revised dual lands, 2nd of $60 or two Pithing Needles, and 3rd of $20 or a Force of Will. The Soldiery took a big loss, but the TO felt it was smart to gaurantee that prize support despite the weather and the ensuing turnout.
I played Iggy Pop, exactly the same list that Mike Bomholt won with last time. I went undefeated in the swiss and then beat Mark Trogdon's Burn deck in the top 4 to meet teammate Lyle Hawkyard playing Goblins in the finals. Lyle and I split the prize with each of us getting NINETY dollars for a 9 person tournament. Top 4 was: Solidarity, Iggy Pop, Goblins, and Burn.
I beat Burn and Goblins beat Solidarity
Amazing prize support. Major props need to go to the Soldiery. I hope that all of you who wanted to make it out will show up at our next event. Right now, that event will either be Sunday Feb 25th, or the first Sunday in March. Straw poll here will help us decide. Which do you guys prefer?

Yeah the weather was such stains.
If you want to ball in Columbus, I guess you need to bring your Iggy hate with you.

There's an event in NY the weekend before (Feb 17) so people may not want to drive in. Then again, City 2HG Champs are the first weekend in March.

I got the round 1 bye which meant I only actually had to win 1 round and from there I could just draw into top 4. How rucky as winning a match is goblins specialty.
At the last MD open the field was heavy aggro so I decided to maindeck 2 rancor in my build. I didn't once get a chance to try those out.
Round 1:Bye
Round 2: Solidarity
In my first game I get lucky and the guy just wiffs when I have lethal on the stack.
In game 2 I bring in 4 Chalice and 2 Pyrostatic Pillar(I included these at the last minute when I saw that half the field was combo). My opening hand was 2x Siege Gane Commander, 2x Chalice and land. I roll with it. We both lay lands with our first turn and on my 2nd I drop chalice for 1. When I see his face, I know he sided into the BeB plan and the chalice resolves. I think this next turn i topdeck the Pyro Pillar and cast that, it resolves. On my next turn I drop Chalice 2. GG.
Next round I got paired against Smennen, so we draw.
Round 4 I played against Stax. I don't even need to play it to make top 4 but I decide I want to win a match to bolster my rating. A draw would not have really put my opponent as a lock into top 4, so I figured why lose a rating point if my opponent isn't a lock. when I say I played against Stax, I really mean I made 3 play mistakes in as many turns game 1 including not attacking the turn I cast warchief, then attacking into a factory with warchief. I still win, because its gobbos, but ya, im an idiot.
The next game is a blowout in my favor.
Top 4. Solidarity again. I blew my luck beating him in the swiss so I figure this is the end of my run for the money. Game 1 he goes off with lethal on the stack. He freezes me for a total of 13 copies. I am left with 4 cards in my library and he has the mana for a storke for 1. How lucky. We look at his GY, he had a flash of insight with a well stocked GY to insure he would draw another reset for the win. Thank god my opponent is new to the deck.
I side in the 6 hate cards again. He mulls, I keep. I lead with turn 1 vial, he forces. My how i Love 2 for 1s after a mulligan. I think after that I drop the chalice 1 which sees another force. at this point my opponent has 3 cards in hand and I believe I have 6 or 7. I ride to a victory.

Well done Lyle. When I heard only 9 people showed up, i thought you probably managed to miss top 8. Sorry about wussing out, when it snows in Ohio though everyone turns into retards. At least I wasn't the only one who skipped.

I have a new respect for a shop that I will never go to.
If I'm ever in Ohio, I'll have to stop by this Soldiery though.
Congrats on the win though, IGGy is pretty nutty.

I think the most surreal thing is when a complete stranger you meet at a tournament hears your name and goes "Oh, yeah. I've read your stuff." It's kind of weird, yet feels good all at the same time.

I don't think anyone insinuated that these results are meaningful beyond the event itself.
