In a post apocalyptic time…one man…will enter the microwave dimension…to feast upon the souls of those who have perished before him….Rated R…Starring….umm well on to the tournament report.

Well here goes my first tournament report ever.  Going to be rough, be easy on me!

I played gifts (nothing new here) running a kind of funky build.  Here’s the list:
Maindeck:
3 Gifts Ungiven
4 Merchant Scroll
4 Brainstorm
4 Force of Will
3 Duress
4 Mana Drain
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Time Walk
1 Recoup
1 Empty the Warrens
1 Tendrils of Agony
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Cabal Ritual
4 Underground Sea
2 Volcanic Island
2 Island
2 Flooded Strand
3 Polluted Delta
1 Swamp
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Sol Ring
2 Dark Ritual
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Tinker
1 Darksteel Colossus

Sideboard:
2 Red Elemental Blast
1 Rebuild
2 Flametongue Kavu
1 Echoing Truth
2 Tormod’s Crypt
3 Pithing Needle
2 Hurkyl’s Recall
2 Empty the Warren

And now time for the games!

Round 1:  Andrew Fox with Everything wins again

I begin the round by entering my power yawn phase…the Dunkin’ Donuts coffee still hasn’t kicked in, and I should be sleeping right now.

Game 1:  First game starts and I loose roll.  We both mulligan to 6 and I keep mediocre hand with not much gas in the beginning w/ warrens, gifts, 3 lands, and a mox ( I think this is what it was).  He duresses me at some point…but I manage to gifts for a non winning stack, and proceed to warrens for 10 soon afterwards.  Next turn I swing with the 10 warrens tokens, and brainstorm into a time walk.  We go to game 2.

Game 2:  Game 2  I don’t sideboard, however he sideboards around 8 cards I believe.  He keeps his hand of 7, but I have to mull to 6.  Andrew goes first and leads with duress.  He rips my duress and passes.  I attempt to brainstorm and he pyroblasts it.  I eventually sneak a colossus through but it gets hidden.  I lucksac ripping a yawg will…and replay duress and colossus again.  I win soon afterwards.

1-0

Round 2:  Craig Dupree with TMWA

Great, one my most unfavorable matchups.

Game 1:  I loose the roll.  He leads with fetchland- scrubland, duress…taking my force of will.  I end up duressing him, but I forgot what I pulled.  Soon afterwards I resolve a mystical tutor taking recall at the end of his turn.  During my upkeep he extirpates my Force of Will, thus shuffling my recall.  I somehow win against all odds by ripping tinker like a pro next turn.  I also merchant scroll for ancestral recall and play it.  Collossus ends up finishing the job.

Game 2:  I sideboard out 4 drains…replacing them with 2 flametongue kavu and 2 empty the warrens.  Craig leads off by casting Cabal therapy naming brainstorm.  He hits one of them.  He ends up playing a rule of law a turn later, and I’m forced to go the colossus route.  I cast tinker, w/o backup because I’m on a short clock with the lil dudes he has out.  Tinker gets reb-ed and I soon lose that game.

Game 3:  Craig mulls to 6, and I keep a healthy 7.  I turn one scroll for recall and pass.  I recall during his upkeep.  Recall resolves.  On his first turn he plays duress…taking my duress.  A few turns later I try to go for a really small win…or atleast something to chump block with, and go, my upkeep mystical for empty the warrens, draw EtW, first main crypt, mox, empty the warrens for 6.  This little dudes soon get pyroclasmed and jotun grunt along with 2 dark confidants beat me down for the lose.

I wish Craig luck and continue to my next opponent.
1-1

Round 3:  Don Belcaster with gifts

Yay mirror matches aren’t fun! Smile

Game 1:  I don’t remember much of this game, except I got the weaksauce, then drew into nutty things…but it was too little to late.  Don is a great player and made sure that he was going to get the win when he gifts for the win stack.  He played several gift stacks with bombs before doing this.

Game 2:  I side in 2 reb, 2 tormod’s crypt, and 1 echoing truth.  I take out 4 drain and 1 dark ritual to make room for these.  I had a nice hand with recall with backup.  I procede to play land, pass turn, and during his upkeep cast recall.  Recall resolves.  Next turn I play brainstorm, polluted delta and pass.  End of turn I fetch to get rid of the garbage on top and to thin out the deck.  The turn after that I play crypt, and tinker the crypt.  He attempts to drain it, but I force of will his drain.  The iron beast hits the board and beats for the win…all with 2 rebs chillaxing in my hand.

Game 3:  Game 3 is really interesting.  We end up going to time with a 5 turn clock to finish up the game.  I believe it was turn 4, I storm up to like 22 storm…and brainstorm with only 1 black mana in my pool and plenty of colorless….The only way I can tendrils for the win is if I hit a mox jet, or ritual I believe (don’t remember exacts but it was a really low percentage) and of course being Marek and all I do, and proceed to win.

Don is a tough opponent and it was great playing against him.
2-1

Round 4:  Tim Greenfield with Tyrant Oath

To be completely honest I was not expecting this one at all…Oath is not a deck that shows up that often recently, and…I haven’t actually played against a tyrant build before.

Game 1:  I win the roll, and we both keep full hands.  I don’t remember exactly what happened with this game, but I know I tried to cast recall with backup, and he had double force, and a drain in hand Sad  .  This was very disappointing.  After tidespout tyrant hits the board, there is not much I can do.  He bounces all my lands, and everything favorable in play.  This makes it tough to play my late game win spells and I am soon beat down.

Game 2:  I board in an echoing truth to take care of the tyrants and get rid of a drain.  He goes down to 6.  I assume the control role at the beginning just countering all his bomb spells…then both of us run out of gas, and he rips recall of the top of his library and proceeds to win with 2 tyrants and a simic skyswallower on the board.
2-2
At this point I almost decide to drop for the vintage booster draft…but it is full and decide to continue onward.

Round 5:  Oliver Beaumont with Salvagers

To be completely honest, I don’t remember much about this round…at all.  I have my mind focused on some tumblin’ dice coming up  Very Happy.  Sorry really don’t remember anything, lol.  Also, the notes I’m taking are getting weaker and weaker with each round.  I know one game I won with a warrens for 10, but not sure about the other.
3-2

Round 6:  Sara Yarrington with Gamblin’ Salvagers

Round 1:  I know Sara will most likely be playing the mascot deck of Myriad Games…or something with similar colors/ideas.  The game runs smoothly and I end up getting a tendrils for like 26 set up and I realize that I should have demonic tutored for the tendrils…and not mystical tutored and brainstormed into the tendrils (I only have one blue mana, and don’t get to brainstorm, lol).  I fizzle out.  Later in the game I tinker colossus.  Colossus swings for 11.  I pass.  Sara has a dark confidant out and it’s ability triggers getting her a vampiric tutor.  Instead of casting it before her draw phase, she draws.  A few seconds later she realizes her mistake and we go to game 2. (Don’t feel bad Sara, we both made big mistakes  Very Happy )

Round 2:  Wow, no notes for this game.  I win but don’t remember how, lol (that’s how I roll).
4-2

After all this is said and done there is 5 people with 12 points a piece.  I am one of them.  3 out of the 5 will top 8.  I am not one of them (damn tiebreakers, lol), but Dan is the man…he proceeds to give the two who just miss top 8 two booster packs.  SCORE!

Now for the famous props/slops list:

Props:

-Dan for giving me a free booster for my first time at myriad games, 2 for just missing top 8, and another for something else. (One of which was screwed up and gave me 2 uncommons and 2 rares,….even better is the rares were Extirpate and Damnation…CHA-CHING!) Smile
-Brassman and Gaagooch for exploiting themselves to be put on the internet in cell phone videos.
-Sara’s Myriad Mana Cookies
-Free myriad gear (mugs are pretty hot)
-Insane mini game side tournaments, such as the beloved Tumblin’ Dice
-Dan for carrying KMC sleeves, the best sleeves in the world.
- Mulling to 5 and getting broken hands

Slops
-Mana Drain for being a pitch card to Force of Will all day.
-Being surprised by Tyrant being oathed up and getting all my lands bounced.
-Just missing top 8 due to tie breakers.
-Forgetting my jacket in Myriad when I left.
-Having a cold and being tired.
-Making play mistakes

Thanks again Dan and Sara… Definitely be back there soon!  Some of the best prize support as well as the most fun and yet competitive environment I’ve ever played in.  Hope to see a lot of you at Templecon in 2 days!

Planar Chaos boosters give 1 rare, and 1 rare or uncommon Timeshifted card, plus regular uncommons, common Timeshifted cards and regular commons.  It's entirely possible to get 2 cool rares (even three if you are REALLY lucky).

Ah ok cool, did'nt know that damnation counted as a timeshifted card (I know its similar to WoG, but didn't know that made it count).  Reguardless, it was a nice pack none the less  Very Happy

Ok thanks a lot Dan.  Yeah your tournament fufilled and exceeded everything I hoped for.  Should be there the 24th.  See you tomorrow.  Meet you in the top 8 Smile  Also on further note...not playing that crazy deck i mentioned...decided to go straight gifts then my giftlong build I was working on.  It wasn't consistent enough with its mana base for my liking.  Anywho...see you tomorrow.
