This appears to be a single shot scene from "The Children of Men".

Hopefully, it won't give too much away for those who haven't seen it yet, but man, this was beautiful filmmaking!

Just, wow!

More... just stunning!

One of my fave shots is the opening of Altman's "The Player." That was pure genius.

Don't they also do an extended single shot scene when they're trying to get through the prison grounds while the army invades?  That was the one that really impressed me.

*Interesting note.  In spite of a movie saturated with violence, the protagonist never picks up a gun.

Was this movie any good?

I can see how a movie might bd filmed in one shot (Theater/Plays), but this involved moving cars, flirting, action, blood, drama, in and out of cards, etc.

The 2nd scene involves a full blown battle sequence, several city blocks, explosions, 3-4 story buildings, crazy!

Also, on a side note, the "tone" of the visuals very much reminded my of Resident Evil 4, the only computer game that I have played.

I think the battle shot was like the longest single shot in a major motion pic, or somthing along those lines. Apparently, the battle shot was the last of four takes, and the last possible chance to get it done. The first three had been screwed up because of people forgetting their lines, tripping, timing being off, or extras randomly walking into the shot. When the blood splatter hit the camera lens there was a moment of panic, but i suppose it all worked out in the end.

I thought the movie was well done, although hardly as good as the hype that surrounded it.

That being said, come on. Didn't this feel like you were watching someone play half-life 2?

Actually the first 20 minutes or so of Snake Eyes were a single continuous shot.  I believe, although I could be wrong, that Snake Eyes was the first movie to really attempt that sort of long single take.

So I suppose I should take The Fringe back out of my sig now...

I noticed that the openning of The Player was done in one shot, and it was impressive, but I didn't like the overall film (I haven't bothered to watch it a 2nd time)

My only game console experience is Resident Evil 4 (which had a plot, and kept me sucked into the game).

The gun battle is the 2nd link I put up.  By this time in the movie, I was ready for it.

That first scene, in the car, caught me completely off guard, as I was sucked into the plot, and noticed likely CG ping pong balls

There's a scene in The Protector (Tony Jaa is so awesome) where he walks up a five-story area and kicks ass the entire time. Worth watching just for that scene.

Actually I've found a lot of Hollywood productions (as well as comic books) to include protagonists/heroes that either don't/refuse to use Guns or don't/refuse to kill their "enemies."

Yes, there'll always be the action films in which your hero is someone like Arnold where it's full of the protagonist blowing people away.  But then there will also be your Dare Devils, Batmans, and your King Arthurs (sorry, I forget the characters name and the actors name, I just remember he played Arthur and was in Sin City).

Irreversible also had a long single shot.

Alfred Hitchcock's Rope is done in one continuious shot.
It might be important to distinguish between one shot in terms of what you see and one shot in terms of how it was filmed.  Rope is actually a bunch of ~10 min shots connected through seamless editing.  You can see this in the film as the camera pans around the back of a dark chair, and stuff like that.  Many of the continuous shots in Children of Men were composited together using modern-day visual effects technology.  Russian Ark was actually filmed as one continuous 90 min shot, which makes it unique.  Russian Ark is a pretty amazing film for other reasons, but if you don't know lots of Russian History, you'll be lost real quick.

There's a really great long take in Touch of Evil when they go into the suspect's apartment.  Everyone always talks about the shot at the beginning of the film, but the later one is more impressive, taking place indoors, going through an elevator, etc.

I really like a lot of the single shots used in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; there are instances of actors using trapdoors to appear at other places in the house, Jim Carrey has to change clothes behind the camera in a short amount of time, and there is one really cool set change when you go from the friends' apartment into the bookstore where Kate Winslet's character works.
