On a blistering cold day in Wisconsin eleven players came to a small card store in Racine to do battle on the vintage battle grounds. Although the turn out was low, every player in this tournament had plenty of experience to guide them throughout 4 rounds of swiss, and the cut to top4. Going into round 4 the two 3-0s were Mike Solymossy and carpooler Tony Lyskawa. The four 2-1s were paired up as follows: former sixth best legacy player in the world, Ben Roberts, against the fifth best vintage player in the world Alex Franson. The other match was current sixth best legacy player in the world, James King, battling his ICBM teammate and vintage adept, Ben Carp. Ben Roberts powered his gush combo deck through Alex’s old school GWS long. In our other match James and Ben battled it out with 4 color control losing to James’ Platinum oath deck. So now our epic top4 is set. Four men who rode in two cars are ready to fight for a play set of Foil flooded strands, and three non blue duals. Soly vs. James. Soly get off to a good start game one. James takes game two. Games 3 essential comes down to James with two platinum angels in play, and Soly with two large dryads. Soly is at five life after the angels get in there and James attempts to thought seize. Soly forces, James forces back, as does Soly. James passes Soly swings James down to negative life and plays the last card in his hand echoing truth. In our other top4 game Tony with Metal worker/staff combo mud, plays against Ben Roberts. Ben loses game 1 after he resolves Tinker for DSC to hold off a Factory and Juggernaught with two Sword of Fire and Ice in play when Triskellion comes down to get the last point of damage across. In game two Ben Drains a Triskellion and attempts a large Empty the Warrens but doesn’t do his math correctly and has to settle for a next turn Empty the Warrens for 6 goblins. After two attacks into a Factory, Ben Needles the Factory and Tony is unable to gain enough life with double Staff of Domination to hold off the onslaught. In game three, Tony activates a Memory Jar during his upkeep with a Metal Worker and 2 Spheres in play, Ben responds with Hurkyl’s Recall and Tony is stuck with playing only a lock piece. At the end of Tony’s next turn, Ben Gifts Ungivens for Lotus, Dark Rit, Fastbond, and a Mox, and then proceeds to Yawg Will into 28 goblins and a hand of double force, sealing game 3. Ben and Soly split the spoils and each get two strands, and roll off for the non blue dual. This tournament while small ran very smoothly and quickly. Prize support turned out to be quite good for the amount of people involved. Damien runs good tournaments and the prize support for this while not being power was worth more then the paid in entry fees. Thanks to everyone who came out to play.
