Euclid's Elements is MY bible!

Well, one more TMD Open in the books.

First, and foremost, I'd like to thank everyone who came out for the weekend.  I always appreciate your support and hope you will continue to attend my events.

I'd like to thank those who helped me out on the weekend.  Derek Macatavey, our head judge, worked his butt off and gave 100% for his last event before moving to Florida.  He will be missed.  Jarad Demick and Christ Kitzmiller were also a huge help on Saturday and Sunday respectively.  Despite being down one person on Saturday, we pulled it off, thanks to Scott Hughes and Oliver Beaumont for table judging the top 16.

The attendance could have been better.  I believe there are many reasons for this.  First, there was a PTQ and a Legacy event going on in the area on the same day.  Second, Extended being the format of this PTQ season took a few players away from our normal showing.  ICBM who normally show tremendous support bringing 10+ from far out west could not make it and their always fun presence was missed.  Additionally, I feel vintage as a whole may be declining in player base(though not neccesarily popularity).  Whatever the combination of reasons may have been, I still had a good time and I think everyone else did as well.

Because I run these tournaments as a hobby not as a business, I hope the players understood why I didn't give away the prize support based on 130 players.  This 130 player prize payout would have allowed me to take a little profit for my efforts.  Based on the smaller attendance, I used an excell spreadsheet I put together to take into account my expenses(side events, $500 for playmats and shirts, staff costs, etc) and my income(from byes and proxies) and calculated the most I could give away in prizes without taking a loss.

The ome time I came close to giving up hosting tournaments was when I took a huge hit by giving away the full prize support on an event that had subpar attendance.  It didn't feel right that it cost me money to provide a service for others, and although I love running events, it really didn't feel fair to me.

For that reason, I decided that as long as people are okay with me using this system(giving away as much as I possibly can based on attendnace when we have low attendance and even more than advertised when we go above advertised attendance) then I will continue to do what I can to run the best possible tournaments I can.  I believe this is a reasonable expectation, but please let me know if it isn't.

Day 1 started promptly with a player's meeting in which the following recognition was given.

Steve Menendian was awarded the second Vintage Achievement Award.  Here are some snippets of reasons given for Steve to earn this distinction:

Quote
Steve keeps us on the map and in the minds of the powers that be.

I belive that Steven Menedian should win the award, he brought vintage to the invitational and got tons of people insterested in our format, he is also one of the few vintage article writers, and the only truly profilic one.

Steve Menendian - for his continued articles promoting the format

He has really matured as a person, and he's awesome as Vintage's emissary to the rest of the Magic community. Just read any of the feedback for his articles, tons of non-Vintage players read and like his articles.

I'd vote Smmenen for the nomination thingy. Someone who studies the format and writes about it as much as he does, especially compared to all the other vintage writers we don't have, should get some sort of recognition.

He is a Vintage leader, he writes weekly on topics regarding the vintage community, he is a voice that Wizards does pay attention to. His skill with the game is phenomenal and his deck building skills legendary. The fact that he is a lawyer who makes time for writing weekly articles is awesome.

I have not had the pleasure of meeting Steve, but he is perhaps the second best reason to make the treck to Gencon in 2008.

(Contact me, Steve, to discuss how you want me to get the plaque to you.)

Next, the runner up award was given to Mark Trogdon and Jerry Yang.

Here is just one response on behalf of Mark and Jerry:

Quote
I would like to nominate Mark Trogdon and Jerry Yang for the Vintage Achievement Award. I'm sorry that's two people, but I'm not sure they could be separated. Together (and rarely does one attend a tournament that the other does not) they do more to support Vintage tournaments all over the Midwest than anyone else I know. Every weekend they load up the Trogvan with other players and drive to the big tournament, whether it's in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, or elsewhere. Their enthusiasm for the format is infectious, and without them, tournaments within 5 hours of Cleveland would often be five or six players smaller, simply because they drive everywhere and are awesome about motivating players to go.

They are helpful to new and inexperienced players (myself included) and are worthy adversaries for testing and in competition (I know Smmenen likes to test his decks against Trogdon's Workshops). They test constantly in all archetypes and regularly come up with new, great ideas that often go unnoticed, but sometimes make it into the mainstream. I know Wirecat has been showing up in Workshop Aggro lists, Guile has made it into more than one mono-blue deck, and people are realizing that having 8 Spheres of Resistance and another card is better than having those Spheres plus Trinisphere (since two Spheres or Thorns generally make 3Ball obsolete).

Plus, they have their tournament accomplishments. Trogdon was 16th at Gencon and Jerry finished highly at Day 1 SCG in Chicago. They both have numerous local top 8s to their name as well.

They also know just about everyone who plays Magic and every great restaurant wherever we go. This makes all of our pre- and post-tournament meals amazing, and really brings the local community together.

I know my Vintage gaming experience would be a lot different, and a lot worse, without these two.

(Contact me, Mark or Jerry, to discuss how you want me to get the plaque to you.)

Of course, the front runner for this award in the weeks leading up to the event was Travis Laplante.  Travis kissed babies and shook hands to stuff the ballot box with his name, though the rational behind why he deserved the award was somewhat lacking.  In the end, Travis gracefully bowed out, but I wanted to acknowledge him for his best trait.  Accordingly, he received recognition as the "Bad Boy" of Vintage and the "guy everyone loves to hate".  Hope you like your status, Travis Smile

Finally, or so I thought, was a token of recognition to Derek for all his help over the last many TMD Opens.  His help was invaluable and his shoes will be hard to fill.

At this point Dan and Sara Yarrington presented me with a plaque thanking me for my work holding Vintage and Legacy events.  It wasn't something I was seeking while giving recognition to people who have helped the growth of Vintage but I won't be too modest or ungrateful to say it was a very nice sentiment.  The humongous smokestack cookie that was also offered to me was the "icing on the cake" and tasted delicious.  Thank you very much Dan and Sara and the whole community for being the awesome people that you all are.  I'm truly the lucky one to share this format with you all.

Anyway, 87 people and 7 rounds of swiss later we had the following standings

Last but not least, Magic Trivia(the whole reason for coming to TMD Open had a robust 8 teams with almost 30 players. In the end, Rich Shay and company showed they could not be dealt with.
1st - Team Five-some 54 points
2nd - Team MMM Smokestack 46 points
3rd/4th - Team Skeletor is Awesome 44 points
3rd/4th - Team Cookin' Cookies 44 points
5th - Team Superman 40 points
6th - Team Last Minute 36 points
7th - Team Solo 35 points
8th - Team Hammafist 30 points

Hope everyone enjoyed the TMD Open experience.

Most importantly, and in closing, the last thing I want is for these events to get stale.  Please share your thoughts with me about what can be added, improved, changed, modified, etc.  No idea too weird or out there will fall on deaf ears.  Please, please tell me what you think, good or bad, I promise I won't be offended.

Also, please feel free to write a tournament report whether you finished in 1st or 88th place.  I'd love to read it.

Thanks for coming.  See you next time.

Great TMD as always Ray.  The big suggestion and issue I heard from multiple players was that this Waterbury was not publicised as much as it should have been and it wasn't (to my knowledge) even sticked in the Tournament Announcement Forumn until the week it was to go on.  I remember having to goto perhaps page 2 of the tourney announcements just to find the dates so my car could request them off.  Just my 2cts.

A good point.  I haven't been hitting the pavement spreading the word on these as much as I used to.  That's one area to focus on.  Thanks for the input.

Second, Extended being the format of this PTQ season took a few players away from our normal showing.

I'd say 20-30 players is more than a few.  I recognized easily two dozen people who have been to other Waterburies that were at the ptq.  I also know of a good amount of players at Waterbury who wanted to ptq but they didn't want to miss Waterbury.  It was a very tough choice for ALOT of players and I think those two big events being on the same day was problematic.  Basically both events had just under 90 people and there's no doubt they completely tore into each other, affecting attendance and prizes for both.  I understand you didn't want to move the event and that you've held wbury with conflicting tourneys before, but this was the first time I can remember that you chose to hold it the same day as a local PTQ.  It didn't help that this PTQ season is a very popular format for a very desired PT location.  My hope is that future Waterburies would not conflict with local PTQ's because many players want to be able to go both instead of choosing bewteen them.

I agree with Outlaw in that this Wbury seemed less publicized than others.  There was a handful of people at the PTQ who would've skipped it for Wbury but they didn't know about until I talked with them.  Why this is I don't know but in the past people being aware of Waterbury never seemed to be an issue.

Anyway by all accounts the tourney looked fun.  I'm glad to hear you didn't take a hit and I doubt anyone cared that you reduced prizes.  You're the best TO vintage has ever had and will ever have.

Great report, Ray! This tournament sounded like a blast even though it wasn't as highly attended you would like  Sad. I really love the idea of the Vintage achievement award, and congratz to Steve for winning it, and Trog and Jerry for coming in second. One of these days after I have been at my job long enough to have a paid vacation I will make a trip to CT for one of these events and maybe drag some CC members with me. Keep up the great work Ray, hope to see you at Gen Con.

I didn't even think about the publicizing of TMD Open with the Facebook Group New England Vintage until the day before.  I was just assuming that everyone and their sister knew about it.  The more tournament players who join the group, the more powerful a tool it will be for getting the word out and organizing rides.  It is open to the entire Vintage community in New England.  Ray, you're now an admin, so adding Events etc... is good to go.

For Canadians in Ontario, this is a hell of a trip, totaling almost 24 hours in driving alone.  In order to get the right number of people together, we need as much advance notice as possible. Two weeks isn't enough time to get a commitment from 7-10 players. We love supporting Waterbury events, but given the logistics of this excursion, as much advance notice as possible would facilitate attendance on our behalf.

I started a "save the date" thread about 2.5 months in advance...Did you guys miss it?  It might have gone under the radar since it didn't have more dfinitive info at the time but I posted it for two reasons:

To give people from far away ample prep time.
and
To make sure that other TO's could plan around my event.

Apparently I'm 0-2. Smile

Ray I personally think your events are great.  You always find a way to keep them fresh and fun for everyone.  Sure sometimes that means giving me a feature match against Travis Laplante and my tinker getting commandeered, but hey, if it helps your tournament im all for being on the wrong end of that joke...Anyways I dont really know if there is much of a suggestion I can make that would make the tournament more fun for me.  I see people who I do not see very often as they are from different states, and the atmosphere is so laid back and relaxed.  I really couldn't possibly ask you for much more than that, you run a great event, you always have plenty planned.  I really liked the commons sealed deck we had a couple of TMD's ago.  It was really fun, and it was free.  Of course I only really like it because Outlaw, Rich, and myself took down the other teams to win it...But still fun.  It's the random little things you have going on that make it so enjoyable, this way if someone scrubs, it's not the normal, "oh great, I'm stuck here until everyone else I car pooled with loses out."  It's not even close to that, it would be more like..."Oh man I lost, but hey, there's a free side event...And plenty of people around to talk to that aren't complete jerks...I LOVE TMD."  On a side note I did think of one thing you could do to make TMD a better place for all...BAN JERIMIAH RUDOLPH...  Wink

Thanks to Ray for holding another great event. I can't even imagine what it takes to do this on a consistant basis, and if a scaled prize support is what it takes for you to keep going, have at it. As for suggestions, the only one I can think of is having it at a hotel again. Gaming Etc is a fine place, and I understand that there are cost issues with having it at the old marriot (I think thats what it was), but it made it easier when pretty much everything was at one site.

For me, and prob many others, TMD opens are about the social aspect of the game as much as the competition. That is so easy to discover that it suggests conspicuousness or little need for perspicacity in the observer. I want to win, but if that was the only reason I was there it probably wouldn't be worth it from a finance perspective. I want to say that when everyone was pretty much staying on site there were more people hanging around longer, more groups doing more things, etc. As the top 16 was going on this time, the place was pretty much empty besides a few people cube drafting. Maybe it was the lower then normal numbers, or maybe I'm just remembering things with rose tinted glasses, but I do miss having my hotel room right upstairs Smile

Regardless, same as always I had a blast. I'll post some pics sometime soon and prob a report after that.

p.s.
Props to Travis for getting out the vote. In a certain way its the best example of community I can think of.

I echo this statement 1000x over. I personally can't stand the new place, and know several other vintage players who have stopped going as well since it left waterbury.

I'm sure Ray will go over this himself, but it's not really feasable for a couple reasons:

1) The old Marriott and Ray had a couple major issues in terms of banquet hall rental timing (lots of other functions running late making organizing a nightmare, and other stuff the hotel should have cleared up and didn't do properly)

2) Gaming Etc is owned by good friends of Ray, and it's a tremendous help to them to generate what's usually a pretty stellar turnout for people who buy a lot of older singles and such they have trouble selling to their usual crowd.

Personally I think the best option would be to host it in the hotel I do the books for.  It'd be cheaper than the Marriott, with similarly cheaper accomodations (which are more plentiful.)  The bar/restaurant in my hotel is also quite a bit more useful than the one at the Marriott (and cheaper besides!)  It's immediately off the exit from Route 91, so there's not really any way to get lost on the way there.  It's right next to a bunch of college campuses and would generate a bunch of local interest.  It's within walking distance to about 50 different restaurants (literally, anyone who's seen downtown Northampton can attest to this) and it's only about 30 minutes north of the Connecticut border.  However, I have pitched this idea to Ray (and actually a couple other TOs) and they haven't gone for it.

I do miss being able to get trashed and just walk upstairs in pajamas (so the win).  Or for all the chaps attempting to bring females to the venue, you need a hotel room that they can sit up in and cry while your downstairs nerdin it up.  Old school Waterbury FOR LIFE!
