29 people showed up to Saturday's TimeTwister tourney! I heard Manny won, but that's hearsay

37 people showed up for Sunday's Unlimited Black Lotus tourney, including MutedEquillibrium's crew of 8 from Southern California.

Mods can unsticky Eudo thread in tourney announcement forum now. It's over for now...

some hot chick with pink hair had a video camera on for much of the tourney, and some dude took notes on at least top8 or just finals, so more goodies and lists (that I will copy/paste here) will be up at www.eudemonia.net/p9 soon.

Top 8
Brett Allen (Hiryu) - TPS Mastriano style...
Alex Bloche - Crushing Chamber
Eric Campusano (Campee) - UWB Fish
Dan Messineo (Dnine) - Painter Control (Welders, Trinket Mages, etc)
Jeff Neilson (LotusHead) - Stax with maindeck Leylines and singleton Helm of Obedience tech (ObeyLines)
Josh Stewart - Shops (Shop aggro according to Webster) 5c Stax
Aaron West - Ichorid
Philip Yam - UW Fish

Brett beat Aaron (I belive)
LotusHead STOMPED on Alex
Dan pwned Philip Yam
and Eric stopped Josh

I may have had Dan and Eric's opponent's confused.

Quote
Josh was actually playing 5-c stax. I had forgotten to change the note on the list I gave you.

Quaterfinals:
Brett Allen beat Josh Stewart
Eric Campusano beat Aaron West
Top 4:
Dan beat Lotushead 2-0
Eric beat Hiryu

Eric and Dan decided to split the Lotus ($600 cash value) but played for the title of Winnar!
Eric beat Dan 2-0.

Pics will be entered into this post sooner or later.

My field game 1 round 1 vs Vincent's Doomsday. I just tutored for Helm of Obedience, but had to wait a turn or two to unveil it.

Vincent's Proxies...

Team Vacaville's Alex Bloche just got Hurkyl's Recalled. His shit just goes back into play.

Credmond playing some Vromanesque pile with Zombie Infestations and Hide/Seek etc.

Crushing Chamber just draws and draws cards. With 3 Tanglewires maindeck and 4 Thorn of Amethyst in the side (and lots of Duplicants) even Tinker aint so scary.
Note: If your town does not have a T1 scene, build proxy decks and train the local 12 year olds to play. Ok, Alex might have been 13, but Crushing Chamber has been a permanent part of our gauntlet for like forever and randomly pwns any deck. It went 5-0 in swiss (one scoop to teammate so 5-1-0).

No clue what is going on here, but Marco has been a Eudo staple since the beginning and is playing Night's Whisper Slaver.

Don't know this guy. Might be from the SoCal crew, but boy Vincent loves facing shop deck after shop deck. Smile

Galen (Aardshark) playing Smmemen Tendrils or something. I'm sure he'll elaborate if he wants to. Cody.dec?

Dunno what is going on here. Dan vs someone with underground seas. Austin took this, while txting his homies on my cellphone.

Ochoa's Gifts Pile vs Ichorid.  He lost, but he Time Walked and Ancestraled first.

Junior getting pwned by Fish. He scoops to any and all in play hate. He once scooped to me after winning the die roll and Thoughseizing me first turn.

Scoop-monkey.

Brett vs ? Duress on Duress action, or something...

Dunno. Looks like DSC in play with counter on it?

David "Webster" Ochoa: Choice of a New Generation

Finals Dan vs Eric

Hi guys. Eric Campusano here. I did indeed play against Dredge in the first round of the top 8 of the Lotus tournament. Also, it might be interesting to note that I started the day with a record of 0-1-1 and 0 byes =) Here's my decklist in case anyone is curious. It way outperformed my expectations. Top 4 for the Timetwister and 1st for the Lotus is way better than I expected to do with it. Saturday was supposed to be a test run to see if it was actually viable. It's basically URBana fish but I took the red out in favor of white. I thought Javelineers were too good to pass up with all the fish, welders, and dark confidants that I was expecting to see. Also, I felt that the gorilla shamans didn't give me much of a clock so I opted for Jotun Grunts instead. I swapped the two waterfront bouncers out for two Swords To Plowshares because I'm not a big fan of waterfront bouncer. I actually considered playing stormscape apprentice instead of the plows because in some situations it might be better, but I was also expecting to see a decent number of Platinum Angels and plow is a much better answer there. Anyways, here's the list:

Deck name: Meddling Who? (This is the first time I've played u/w/b fish without Meddling Mage.. I just don't think he's that great anymore. There are too many 1-of's nowadays with brainstorm and gush restricted for him to be that effective. Also, I really want to use my 5 strips as soon as possible and he kinda screws that plan up)

4 Cursecatcher
4 Dark Confidant
3 Ninja Of The Deep Hours
3 Icatian Javelineers
3 Jotun Grunt

4 Duress
3 Daze
2 Stifle
2 Swords To Plowshares
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
4 Force Of Will

3 Null Rod

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Jet
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
3 Tundra
3 Underground Sea
1 Scrubland
4 Polluted Delta
2 Flooded Strand
1 Island

Sideboard:

3 Threads Of Disloyalty
3 Umezawa's Jitte
2 Extirpate   ( I only used these once (ichorid) but I was expecting several people to be playing either landstill, counter-top, or combo of some sort and thought they might be useful)
4 Leyline Of The Void
1 Null Rod
2 Seal Of Cleansing

I wasn't expecting any stax decks so no kataki, energy flux, hurkyl's, etc. There were almost no stax decks on Saturday but a decent number of them showed up on Sunday. I lost to one of them in the swiss (the one that made top 8) and beat a mono red version with welders, juggernauts, solemn sims, etc. Boarding in Leylines was huge against that deck.. and all the other welder decks for that matter.

Cursecatcher is great. I used to think that he wasn't that great because your opponent can just play around it.. but all the mana denial with strips and null rods makes him awesome. Also, they can never play force of will when they're tapped out which actually comes up pretty often.

This is the second year in a row that I've split in the finals of the Lotus tournament.. I'm actually pretty proud of that =) Thanks to Eudemonia for another great T1 season. I look forward to playing again next year.

Brett Allen (Hiryu) - Grim Long

Actually, I played TPS, very similar to Mastriano's championship list.

I squeaked out a tight match against Stax in top 8, despite having the bare minimum of anti-shop cards in my board (I swapped in more anti-fish hate because of the local meta... forgetting that the SoCal influx would bring in a lot more shops).  Fortunately I had Rebuild in the main so I could storm out in game 1, and an unopposed Negator took game 2.  Then I lost to Eric in the semis... mulled to 4 in game 1, and double-Duress, double-Grunt in game 3 took away my action and left me on a short clock.

My other loss was in the Swiss against shops again... affinity shops.  He wins the roll and plays turn 1 Strip Mine, Mox Pearl, Mana Crypt, Genesis Chamber, Ornithopter - make a guy, Frogmite - make a guy, Myr Enforcer - make a guy.  I play a Polluted Delta and pass it back, taking 9.  On my next turn, I'm a mana short of going off, so I have to pass it back at 10 life.  He draws Skullclamp, sticks it on Enforcer and kills me.  Sad

Major props to Eudemonia for another great tournament series!

Dan here, I split in the finals and took home half the lotus with my painter deck I've been tweeking for the last few tournaments now.  We played the finals out for bragging rights and I lost 2-1 basically to the die roll and a mistake game one.  Game one I keep a almost perfect hand of mountain, island, fetchland, reb, A. recall, trinket mage, S. planning.  Going second I was too slow.  I open with mountain and say go keeping REB mana up in hopes of casting recall turn 2 and play around daze.  At my end of turn my opponent casts his own ancestral and I attempt to reb.  Of course it gets dazed.  Thinking back if I was going to attempt to play around daze I should have stuck with my read and just let his recall resolve.  Had I had protection for my recall then I would have been much better off as my card quality is higher then fish.  Instead I wasted my REB and allowed my recall to get countered.  Good thing we weren't playing for the lotus.

As for the rest of the tournament of course I was pretty pleased.  I got my first round bye and won my next 3 matches to make top 8.  I felt pretty lucky as I had some pretty favorably matchups and also avoided getting parred against some of the top players there.  I don't remember much of my matchups, but I played against a bomberman deck one round.  Lost game one to him having his combo in hand with counter backup.  Games 2 and 3 were much easier as he brought in a fair amount of painter hate and I just went directly to the trike/plats beatdown plan.  Another round I faced a tendrils deck that rightfully should have beat me, but both games were punted even after he resolved will against me.  Game 2 I managed to cast slaver and activate it.  Of course the top card of his deck was necro so that was nice.  The forth round I believe was against a slaver deck and I pretty much had the nuts hands both games with plenty of card draw and answers to all his threats.

In the top 8 I get paired against fish and feel pretty good.  Game one I get my basics out while he plays tundras and factories.  Down came Magus of the moon and that was pretty much game.  Game 2 I kept a hand I probably shouldn't have as it was light on lands.  The one land was a basic so I thought I was safe but his hand had the stripmine and it took me a while to recover.   I believe I was able to grind him out for the win, but I may be mistaken.

Top four I played Jeff and felt like his deck didn't want him to win.  He took many muls and had no acceleration which I hear is bad for a shop deck.  It would have been nice to have more of a match as matchups with Jeff are always entertaining, but I'm happy with the win and half a lotus.

As for my list I still feel like it needs some work.  I have too many 2 and 3 of's and my sideboard plan against tendrils decks still seems week.  The Magus's were a nice surprise as I was able to catch a few players with no basics out, but as people become aware that I run them they become less effective.  I wanted to cut the welders, but I feel they are to important to the deck to cut altogether.  With only one grindstone they become a way to get it back if it gets destroyed or countered.  They also mess with my opponents board and help in shop matchups.  The plannings were OK in the deck, but not busted.  They nicely filled the void left by brainstorm though to give me a early way to filter through cards and find what I need.  The deck is quite capable of combo killing turn 2-3, but has no problem switching to a control beatdown mod and ignoring all the grindstone hate people bring in.

Anyway, thanks to Eudemonia for another great series and for keeping vintage alive in the bay area.  Sucks with the recent DCI unbannings we will have to wait tell next spring to try out some new decks, but that's the way it goes sometimes.  Thanks to Eric and congrats on the lotus split.

My mini-report:

I haven't touched Magical cards for a month (mysteriously, at the last Adventures tourney in Sac) and Austin built me up The Gilded Claw with Gilded Lotus x2, Intuion x3, 4 Maindeck Thorn, 0 maindeck Chalice of the Void.  He was even thoughtful enough to gimme a sideboard and have 75 sleeves for the deck.

Thenf Cory Redmond shows up and tells me about the Helm of Obedience/Leyline of the Void combo, so 10 minutes before the round starts, I swap 20 maindeck cards with an hastily build a generic Stax SB.

Round 1: Vincent (Brainiac7) playing Doomsday.
Game 1: He wins the die roll plays Delta, go.
I rape him with turn 0 Leyline, Turn 1 Welder, Chalice for 0 and Trinisphere.
I tutor for Helm of Obedience eventually and combo him out just to say I did. Smile
Game 2: I start with Leyline of the Void x2 again. He plays Delta go again.
I play Mox Mox Sol Ring Sphere of Resistance, but Vincent forces it.  He really hates Sphere Trinisphere Thorn and all the other fun cards that Stax has...So I play gemstone mine, Ancestral targetting me and draw 2 good cards plus REB.
Vincent Scrolls up Ancestral Recall and I REB it with my Mox Ruby that just happend to be untapped. Smile
He is out of gas, and I start getting mean stuff on the board.

Round 2: Michael Klemic - Stragetic Slaver
Game 1 he mulls to 5 plays delta go.
I play Mox Mox Shop Gilded Lotus, which he forces pitching Time Walk. He knows enough about my Shoptech to know that turn 1 Gilded Lotus is bad news. He draws and passes.
I play Smokestack, Tolarian Academy and Time Walk.  He scoops.
Game 2: He rapes my field with Mox Monkey, Wastelands, Ingot Chewer and Tolarian/Trike hotness.
Game 3 I get a Trike on board, Titan, then Demonic Tutor for Trinisphere to make his 2 moxen near worthless.  Mike drew lots of cards (if I recall), but I had no pressure for the first 5 turns or so. The Fatties finally appeared.

Round 3: Johnny Knadler playing ???
He doesn't know me, I don't know him and we have no idea what each other are playing.
I win die roll  Probably put Leyline into play and play Shop, go.  I kept a hand that is awesome as long as I live till turn 3.
He plays Forbiden Orchard, Ancestrals, Mox Lotus Tinker for Colossus. I play a Welder, waste his Orchard (I think) and Gilded Lotus, Tutor for Duplicant, burn for 1 and get ready to get smashed for 10.
He smashes me for 10. Plays Oath and passes.
I ramp up smokestack,  topdeck a Shop and hardcast Duplicant on DSC. Whoot!
He sacs a permanent, Oaths up Akroma and I'm down to 1 life.  I can't take mana burn.
I sac Duplicant, Ramp smokestack up to 2 and RFG Akroma.
He loses his field, but gets to Oath up Gaea's Blessing.
He plays land Ancestral go.
Bazaar gets me hotness and it's over.
Whew!

Round 4:
Alex Bloch - Crushing Chamber.
Game 1 I get an early Karn to stop his equipment shenanigans. Eventuall Titan joins the field and he eventually runs out of chump blockers.
Game 2 I side out Chalices and Leylines and side in 3 Ancient Grudge, 2 Seal of Cleansing 2 Platinum Angels and something else.  I thought they would be worthless and hate cards worth more.
I was wrong. He plays dude after dude after dude, draws a zillion cards with SkullClamp and I die.
Game 3: Same thing again.

Round 5:
Luis Scott-Vargas - Pitchlong.
We are both 3-1 and have to play it out.
Game 1: I win the die roll and play Mox, Chalice for 0 land go.
Luis draws a card and goes into his discard step. Ouch.
Repeat for a few more turns and he scoops.
Game 2: I play early Land, Sol Ring, Sphere of Resistance go.
He plays land go.
I drop 2nd Sphere and proceed to not draw any more land for the rest of the game.
Luis gets Bob online eventually, Tutors up a Hurkyl's Recall (of got it from Bob) and drops a 2nd Bob.
I'm trapped under my own spheres and Luis is just waiting to do the EOT Hurkly's thing.
He smashes me down to 6 and he was at a comftorble 13 life.
I pass the turn (ie, pick up all my artifacts at eot) and Luis reveals Darksteel Colossus and Rebuild to his two Bobs and dies on the spot.  Lucky me! Smile

Round 6: Josh Stewart - Shops
I shuffle up and he offers me the draw. Doh! Forgot I can draw in.

Top 8:
Alex Junior and myself all make top 8. I get paired up against Alex.
I'm still scarred by our earlier battle.
I keep a hand with Leyline in it and it shuts down Alex's Skullclamps right on the spot.
He gets some Frogmytes on the board (with Genesis Chamber giving him extra oomph) but I get Karn. Smile
Then Trike.
Then Titan.
Game 2: I decide to keep the Chalices and Leylines in, and merely take out 5 Spheres for 3 Ancient Grudges and 2 Seal of Cleansing.
I play double Leyline turn 0.
Alex plays Shop, Genesis Chamber Skullclamp. PWNED!
I waste his land and maybe play Mox and Chalice.
He plays a land and passes.
I play Smokestack and Welder.
He plays a Frogmyte and gets a dude.
I ramp up smokestack and ride it out.
Alex plays Tolarian Academy and gets 2 Enforcers out.
I get Karn, then Trike then Titan, etc.
Ok, so I forgot what happened in game 2 but Leyline saved me and I won. Whoot!

Top 4 - Dan Messineo - Painter Control
I lose the die roll, mull to five and play land go.
He plays Mox Crypt Land Magus of the Moon, go.
I play gemstone Mountain go.
Trinket Mage joins in the fun. and I die soon enough.
Game 2 I keep a weak hand, but at least it has 2 ancient grudges and 2 land.
He forces and REB's must stuff (Damn Painter) and I kill artifacts day in and day out, but he gets a Welder online first, and gets a 2nd one to trump my new dude.  I can't do anything and I die. Sad
But I got $80 in store credit which turned into 2 Volcanic Islands and 15 for next time!

Props:
All in attendance! The vibe was great and everyone had a good time.
JeffTheFob for playing Shops!
My deck. I only mulliganed once in Swiss. Smile
Fish for not facing me all day.
Bob for killing LSV out of the blue.
Credmond for handing Austin a working Shop deck with just 6 proxies and lending me the singlton Helm of Obedience.
Webster for buying Alex a drink.
The SoCal crew for bringing 8 up.
Slops:
My back! I hurt it a few days before and had to hobble around like an old man and play Vintage in pain.
I only got to go to 3 of the 9 Eudemonia tournies this year, as I am indispensible at work and sometimes teach SAT prep on Sundays, but I'm glad I got top 4 and got a prize finally.

Sorry to necro this thread, but I just found this image on www.eudemonia.net/p9

Gotta give David Ochoa his due (and Luis and JeffTheFob), they won a lot of these this year.
