We had about 30 people for this tournament, and it was a great time.
The top 8 was (no order)
Jamison Bryant- mana ichorid Jimmy McCarthy- Tez Owen Turtenwald- TPS Brian Fisher- Tez Tony Lyskawa- manaless ichorid Andre Crivello, aka Bobby Hill- RGW beats Derek Wochinski- Tez Alex Franzen- Long
Jamison beat Andre, Jimmy beat Owen, Brian beat Tony, and Derek beat Alex.
Jamison beat Jimmy, Brian beat Derek.
Jamison beat Brian.
So, I decided to be that guy…you know, the ichorid guy. I picked up the deck about a week before the tournament, so I had to play kind of slow to make sure I didn’t miss anything or screw up….my apologies to my opponents. I ended up taking the tournament down with this list-
4x bazaar 4x ichorid 4x grave troll 4x stinkweed imp 4x bridge from below 3x golgari thug 1x darkblast 4x narcomoeba 4x breakthrough 3x careful study 1x ancestral recall 1x black lotus 1x mox sapphire 4x city of brass 3x gemstone mine 3x cephalid colluseum 2x dread return 1x cephalid sage 1x flame kin zealot 4x cabal therapy 4x chalice of the void
4x chain of vapor 4x wispmare 4x leyline of the void 2x ancient grudge 1x darkblast
Round one, I got paired with Jeremy Seroogy, playing TPS.
Game one, I won the die roll and had a pretty insane start with a bazaar and a breakthrough, and therapy took out his ability to cast a turn one bargain. I won on my turn two.
Game two, I opened with leyline and he opened with land, ponder, mana crypt, go. Turns out he had kept a will hand. I led with a bazaar, activated and said go. He upkeep mystical tutors, then plays tinker for DSC after playing a land, which tapped him out. I dredged some cards and used therapy a couple of times- turns out he was holding an extirpate. He should have just kept extirpate up, and tinkered next turn, but as it was I won pretty easily- DSC just can’t race unless it’s turn one.
1-0-0
Round two was Tommy Kolowith playing UR Tez
Game one he locked me out with mainboard relic of progenitus, engineered explosives and blood moon. Eeep.
Game two I won quickly before he could get any of the hate set up.
Our game three ended going to time. Draw.
1-0-1
Round three I got Soly playing 5 color tez.
Game one I kept a bazaarless hand with a careful study and a breakthrough on the play. As it happens, he kept a hand with double force, and forced the both of them. I played draw go for about 5 turns while he didn’t do much…finally I could discard end step to get going. I got there while he continued to draw dead for a while.
Game two he time vaulted me before I had a turn. I asked him to play it long enough to be sure he had boarded in his oath board, as I had expected he would.
Game three I don’t remember all of, but I eventually killed him. I think this was the game where if I gave him one more turn he had me.
Round four, Ryan Mayrand(sp?) with Tezzeret.
Game one he mulls to six on the play, lays out a few moxen and a mana vault and passes. I therapy blindly naming tfk, and he shows me brainstorm and merchant scroll as his two cards. On his turn, he brainstorms, scrolls for gifts and passes. I therapy again, he lets it resolve and I call gifts out…and see will sitting in his hand. Fortunately for me, his will isn’t very strong just then. He opts not to cast it, I end up therapying his will as well, and I won shortly thereafter.
Game two I got him to four as time was called, and dread returned a wispmare to kill his oath. He untaps, ices my gemstone mine to take me off ancient grudge, plays time vault, key oath. Hmm. Looks like he’s taking all five of the turns here. He goes to turn two, oaths up empyrial archangel. He goes to turn three, oaths up another, and swings with the first. He goes to turn four, and I almost scooped to him- I was at 14 and he had two turns of swinging for ten in the air at me…but them I realized that, hey! Wispmare and narcomoeba sure do have flying…guess I’ll just block. He goes to turn five, attacks me down to four. He starts digging for a way to fire me and recur it for the win, but he cant so I win 1-0.
3-0-1
Round five I drew with Jimmy McCarthy.
3-0-2…well, that’s good enough for top 8.
Quarterfinals- Bobby Hill with the RGW list I won with at pastimes in October.
Game one, he won the die roll, and I mulled to five. He led with mog fanatic. I played a gemstone mine and darkblasted it. I ended up having to dredge and play darkblast for a few turns before I found a better dredger, but eventually I was able to dread return for the win.
Game two I mulled to five again, and led with leyline. He led with a kird ape, and said go. I had a bazaar and a dredger this time, so I was able to get going without much delay. He had me waiting on my draw steps, so when I therapied him I called out orim’s chant and scored two of them. He used swords on a couple of my dudes, but with leyline his fanatics couldn’t get at my bridges and he couldn’t find his enchantment removal for it. I ended up getting there with a dread return while at four life.
Semis VS Jimmy with Tez
Game one I kept a dredger-less hand with bazaar, lotus, careful study breakthrough, chalice at zero. I played lotus, which resolved. I played careful study, which was forced. I played bazaar and activated, then cast breakthrough with x=1. Still no dredgers, but I kept a second bazaar in my hand. Jimmy then proceeds to chain mystical for vamp, vamps then draws it with top and plays a maindeck pithing needle. Well, looks like my two bazaars are for shit and I have no dredgers with one card in my hand. He got time vault going and it was over.
Game two we both played terribly. I don’t recall all of it, but at one point I ended up discarding a darkblast to my bazaar only to therapy him and see the jailer I couldn’t get at. That Jailer landed the next turn, but he had pretty much nothing else as my therapy had successfully taken out his oath of druids. I continued swinging until he was at one, at which point he got his time vault together- but he was in an interesting predicament. He could take one time vault turn, but he had only three mana so in order not to die to mana vault he had to use key to untap it. This means that unless he rips time walk, I get another turn. He doesn’t, and he dies.
Game three went on for a bit, with him eventually trying to put together key vault under a will, and me having ancient grudge for him. I got there afterwards.
Finals, VS Brian Fisher with Tez
Game one chalice, therapies and bazaar don’t leave him much chance. He tinkered DSC on turn two, but it wasn’t fast enough.
Game two, he had a relic pretty early, but I used a grudge to make him blow it. He tried for vault, but grudge nailed that one too. I killed him with 2/2s not too much later.
