And here’s the story of a player who wanted to kill one of his opponent’s elfs really badly... and managed to do it badly, too. First, he played Darkblast on the poor Heritage Druid. When his opponent responded with Pendelhaven’s ability, he then wanted to get back the Darkblast by means of cycling Tranquil Thicket, and still replay it in response to the impending +1/+2. Alas, that is not possible. Unperturbed, the player went on to do it anyway, leaving his opponent with a 0/1 Heritage Druid...

This is from the MTG.com's Hanover coverage.

Did I miss something? What's not possible about this?

A plays Darkblast, B responds to Darkblast by activating Pendlehaven.  A wants to then respond to Pendlehaven by cylcing Tranquil Thicket to dredge back Darkblast.  Darkblast is still on the stack however, so cannot be dredged.  It would seem the player instead waited until the Darkblast resolved (by which time Pendlehaven also resolved) to cycle, then played the Darkblast again resulting in a now 0/1 Druid.

The fact that darkblast isn't in the graveyard to be dredged when the pendlehaven ability goes on the stack.

From the way I read it:

Darkblast -> druid
In response:  pendlehaven -> druid
In response: cycle thicket -> attempt to dredge the original darkblast = failure

I am unsure how they went about the 0/1 hermit though, since when caught the player shouldn't have been able to dredge.  Is that how a judge would go about repairing the game state?  Effectively saying that he let the stack resolve before cycling thicket?

Beat to it :/

What Clariax said

Thanks, apparently I did miss something. Smile

EDIT: I missed the part where one player tried to darkblast a 1/1 with Pendlehaven in play. Smile
