Gifts was my favorite deck of all time.  I loved the puzzle of creating the perfect pile that's a lose-lose for your opponent, especially without the training-wheels of Recoup.  Even now, I almost always play a deck with a Gifts in it, because I love it so much.

Maybe I'm weird, but I really liked the Gifts vs pitchlong vs fish vs stax metagame.

2003-2005 was tops.  I agree that TnT was the most fun deck to play in the history of magic.  After gifts started dominating the format, it all went downhill from there.  Although that single card did make names for a lot of people in vintage, it doesn't really mean they were ever good to begin with.

People always used to say "if mana drain were ever restricted, I'd quit the game" but the truth is those people wouldn't have the first clue what to do in vintage if they couldn't play blue based control so they would just lose in every tournament if they didn't go out on top when they had the chance.

I imagine the decline in players is just the fact that people have grown out of magic.  I know personally I only play at a large event or one that has another reason for me attending (such as seeing friends or whatever).  The game has been around since 1993, some things can't really last forever.

Travis, I think this statement is wrong.   I would HATE if drain got restricted, but then I'd just play combo, and still win events.

Since I started tourney Vintage with Bomberman post 5th Dawn, I really appreciate 2004-2006 as the most fun times.  I was learning about the metagame, solidifying rules knowledge, etc.

There was a time that Oath Slaver Fish and Shops were the top decks, and that was fun.  I did get tired of a period where everyone played Chalice or Null Rod (frowns for Oath Salvager player).

But I've yet to become bored with Vintage. I just shed a tear at Brainstorm getting restricted. (It made my Chalice for 1 worse...)

my statement was not applying to "all" drain players, only the ones who say they would quit the game if the card was restricted.

I'm sure that there are people who feel the same way about rituals and workshops though. I cannot imagine type1 without mana drain to be honest, the format has been centered around that card for so long.

We have discussed vintage as format with five pillars.
The Mana Drain archtype.
The Bazaar of Baghdad archtype.
The Dark Ritual archtype.
The Null Rod archtype.
The Mishra's Workshop archtype.

Now seeing as how I'm not a civil engineer (was but switched to electrical), I can safely say everything you once loved and cherished about the format will change if you eliminate just one of those pillars.

Only you travis.  A sixth pillar consisting of monkey cage and war mammoth may be warranted.

@Zeus-Online,
I think he's dreaming...

When did I enjoy vintage the most ?
Probably when Gro-A-Tog was the best deck in the format, right after lorwyn playing with 8 "duress" GAT. I truly think this time was vintages "Golden Age" as most people mentioned back then.

In the early days when decks like Verduran Recursion could run rampant.  But have since learned to like an environment with more checks and balances.
