After playing at GenCon this past weekend it reminded me of how much I love playing Vintage against real cards in real tournaments.  I've been talking to some of the Vintage regulars about the possibility of hosting a sanctioned, no proxy event, at my local store RIW Hobbies in Livonia Michigan on the second weekend in October.  However, I am somewhat worried that we won't get enough people--especially if it is a last minute kind of a thing.  I was also thinking of spicing things up by hosting a sanctioned Legacy tourament for a Mox on the other day of the weekend that the Vintage isn't.  Would people without power who play vintage attend if we put up a prize of a Mana Drain for the best performing deck without Power, Bazaar, Drain, or Shop?

Here is the question:  who would be up for this thing?

The second thing is that I think it might be helpful to organize these sort of tournaments a bit better.  For instance it might be possible to organize car pools ahead of time so that people could drive and lodge together for the events.

Perhaps, have a carpool leaving from NE, one from Ohio, one from Chicago, etc.  I already have about 12 people who say they would be commited to come---not including any of the Canadians.  So, how do people feel about this sort of endeavor, playing without proxies for a Mox.  Anyways, I am excited to try out this little experiment but would like to get some feedback from people first.

what do you think?

I would probably come if I could borrow power, but otherwise I'm not sure.  Having two events makes it a much easier trip for me as well as it gives me basically double the value on gas and food and lodging.  If there's Legacy one day and Vintage the other, I'm also much more likely to come without any power and try and borrow a few pieces instead of just not going at all if I don't have anything certain.

Awesome, Jimmy.

Would you play in the Vintage event if you couldn't get ahold of full power?  What if you could get some power?  Would you play an unpowered deck and try to win the non-power prize?  This is the kind of stuff that I am interested in knowing for my own purposes.

Also, Chapin told me that he would play regardless of whether or not he could borrow power, just on principle.  Sanctioned Vintage, with no proxies seems like it could be a really fun time.

i would definity try to make it and play with an unpowered deck, Theres a few legacy concepts i've been working on with vintage's cards added and i think they could put up a decent challenge against a few powered decks. (some are just roll over and die match ups of course)

I would strongly consider coming.

In general, no, I would not attend an event without power.  Maybe I'll have some power by then, maybe not, but if I knew something like this were approaching it would incentivise me to keep any I win.

I would be considerably more likely to attend an event you run at RIW because you're a teammate and because all of my OH and surrounding area magic friends would also be there, so the magic thing is just an excuse for me at that point.  I don't know what I'd play unpowered or anything, although I would never ever touch dredge again.

I would probably play vintage if I could either borrow some/all power or find a deck which I felt I could win the event with using whatever cards I could get my hands on.  I would obviously play Legacy, even tho I like the format a lot less, because there is no question I could build whatever I want short maybe 43 lands with my own cards and a few loaners.

As a general rule though, if there was like a sanctioned event for the same prizes and stuff in like Indianapolis or Iowa or Minnesota or somewhere where all the OH crew and surrounding areas weren't going to attend, I pretty much wouldn't even consider going without full power and even then it would take a hell of a prize.  Something in Michigan or Ohio is different, but only because the magic side wouldn't really matter as I'd get to hang out regardless of if I play or do well.

I would be 100% all about it. I know that Yangtime and Snoop Trogg would be down with it. I could also wrangle up a few dudesweats from C-Town to go as well.

Yeah, I'd be willing to go with you guys.

I think C-Town could get a car load, maybe 2?

Second weekend of october would be... 10-11. Unless something unforeseen happens, I should be in, and I will try to get more people to come. Rich, Arend, Team Supreme, Cappy, etc... proxy or not, doesn't matter, but if it's non-proxy, someone better bring a bat in case I forget my deck again somewhere.

Arend hasn't really in a while, but maybe if we drag him kicking and screaming? Or, you know, offer him a beer or something.

As for team supreme... james and myself and marc sims and marty birthelmer still make every event, or almost every event.

8 guys, 2 of which are AWOL, 2 of which haven't played in a bit. Plus we have "associates", which number in the hundreds Razz. Mean Paul Dean heads up that list.

Anyway, Arend replied with a huh. I can only assume that means he is in. Very Happy

If I have the time off from work, and the flights out there aren't too expensive, I'd be willing to go if I could drag Jeff Anand along.

If I lived anywhere remotely near this area, I would come in a heart beat and play anything type of deck I would be able to assemble (I sold my power to Myriad in 2007). I think this is very good for the format when you have non-proxy events/ Sanctioned events from time to time. I can't wait to see the results of this tournament, so I hope a lot of people are going to show!
