[RESULTS] ELD's Mox 27

The final ELD Mox tournament of 2009 is in the books, and I am encouraged by the results. The turn out was lower than previous events, but I feel we're at a point where we can begin to build again. 2010 looks like it will be a year of building a new community. Many players from the last era will continue to play, but the focus will not be trying to get people who don't want to play back at the tables. I'll be reaching out to new players, and focus on prize structures that make a larger number of people happy. This will mean less top heavy prizes, but I'll reveal all the details when I announce ELD's Mox 28 later this month.

After 4 rounds of Swiss we had a clean cut to Top 8. I run Top 8 in these situations to avoid a 3-1 missing out on tiebreakers. Swiss events are partially meant to circumvent the negative aspect of single elimination. This makes sure you can lose one bad match up and still have a chance to win.

The Swiss rounds had the top half of the Top 8 as the most powerful archtypes. Time Vault and Storm had the Top 4 slots, with 3 of the remaining decks being null rod strategies. The Top 8 saw all 4 tops seeds knocked off, showing Null Rod decks a force to be reckoned with. Though a Tez deck did sneak into the finals, it was ultimately a Null Rod deck that took home the Mox Emerald. This is a good sign for new players looking to get into the format. It's particularly interesting for Legacy players wanting to give Vintage a try, as Selkie Slam plays like a faster version of a popular Legacy strategy.
