Soul Siphon--- {U}
Tribal Instant---Wizard (Mythic Rare)

Counter target creature spell. Scry 1 (To scry 1, look at the top card of your library, then put it on the bottom of your library or back on top.)

Not this time I'm afraid. Somethings just simply cannot be allowed to happen.

-Unknown Hydromancer Archmage

 Wink Wink Wink Very good and exactly what Worldwake needs. But unfortunately won't have. Scry 1 makes this even better and more attractive to play in 3s or even 4s and helps clear the way for you to topdeck even better!

Essence Scatter should not cost 1 less AND let you Scry.  I'm guessing you say that Worldwake needs this because of the aggressive starts that Zendikar enables, particularly in draft, so you want a one mana creature counter.  So why not limit it to, say, creature spells with converted mana cost 2 or less?  It still stops early beaters, and has relevance in constructed formats since it seems that most good creatures cost 2.

Scry seems really tacked on to this, by the way.

The soul that was siphoned becomes energy that allows the mage to peek into the future.  Very Happy

Remove Soul and Essence Scatter are both not played as a result. Think Flash Counter vs Dispel, except that Soul Siphon would be a far more dead card than Dispel. I mean its only creature spells. This is can be the worst topdeck you get sometimes. Flash Counter was actually played in Extended and some Type 1 lists long ago. Remove Soul doesn't see play outside of Limited. The Scry 1 one part is so miniscule yet helpful enough that players can be persuaded to actually use this card. Yet the Scry 1 is not harmful enough to the opponent that it would be considered devestating or even very annoying should it occur. It is more like a minor itch.

That is incorrect.  SCG's Deck Search engine tells me that 13 Standard decks with notable Top 8 finishes in their deck database over the last few months have some copies of Essence Scatter, including LSV's winning deck at the LA 5K.

And I'm hoping that your smiley next to the suggestion that Scry could somehow be justified by flavor is an admission of how utterly ridiculous that notion is.  It's totally obvious that it's there for mechanical purposes; you don't need to hide that.  It just needs some justification-- like if Scry were a major mechanic for the set, you could tack it on to things like they did in Fifth Dawn.  Lose Hope, Magma Jet, and the like didn't bother explaining Scry with flavor, they just were.  Scry is a great mechanic and I'm all for seeing more of it, but it seems pretty arbitrary to throw it on a card that's already strictly better than a Core Set staple.

Edit: And somehow this became even more bizarre while I was typing! Tribal Wizard? Mythic Rare?  I'd be more amused if I didn't think you were serious.

This forum is no fun. Sorry, I didn't know that Essence Scatter was played in since I've been overseas for a while and don't bother checking up on standard decks other than the ones played in Japan (in fact I rarely do that either), more of a Legacy and Vintage and Draft guy.

But enough about me, let's talk about this card. This card is pretty good right now and let's pretend Wizards recycles the Scrying mechanic. There, its no longer arbitrary.

And if you do not like smilies, maybe you need a hug.  Very Happy

Strictly better than a card Wizards has printed recently with a positive ability tacked on? This is a bit much.
