At least it won't trigger Oath.  The only major effect I think this will have is in stopping Bob from becoming a $25 card in the near future, although I could see Tez decks trying to put it in.

This seems cool in a Ponder/Thoughtsieze/ThornOfAmethyst kind of way.  Not Lodestone Golem cool, but I approve.

And that picture is sick as fuck. What's he doing with those eyeballs in his hands?

The question is, why should you play this over Phyrexian Arena?

Slightly lower constraints on the manabase?  Legacy Lands deck might like it because it won't tie up mana when Tabernacle is out (unlike Confidant, that is, not Arena).

I could imagine this seeing play in Standard Vampires decks, as a way to recover after a Wrath.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

I don't think this will see play in Vintage. Its too heavy for something that doesn't give an immediate effect.

This isn't bad sideboarded in for slower games since it can be cast more easily than Phyrexian Arena.
It's not better than Confidant unless you want something that can't be killed with creature removal.

Would anyone want to play four Confidant and some of these to maximize drawing either in the opening hand? Probably.

I think Night Whispers would take that slot before this card, at 3 mana, usually not coming down before turn 2, having no effect on the board (can't attack or block), and having to wait 2 turns to get your CA back, it seems very slow.

Vintage decks that can produce black can usually manage BB. I'd say it is worse than arena which sees no play anyways.

It's not garbage, it's awesome.  The only problem is that it is all but strictly worse than both Bob and Arena.  It's great that they printed it, though, because it will provide an "almost as good" budget alternative to those cards.

How much does Arena cost? Because this is type 2 legal, and a rare. Arena would cost less.

The one black mana requirement is actually pretty big and make it much more playable in decks that are not heavy black.  Bob is stronger in general, and I can't imagine very many times where a deck will have enough creature hate to make this better.  Let's not forget with Nature's Claim and it's many targets, it's probably more likely to see enchantment hate then creature hate.

Wouldn't you say that "almost strictly worse" is a pretty solid qualifier for "garbage"? Unless you really wanted Bob 9-12, I'd expect this to see very little play. I suspect that for most decks that would run this, the BB component is negligible relative to the reduced lifeloss.

Let's not forget with Nature's Claim and it's many targets, it's probably more likely to see enchantment hate then creature hate.
I suppose it's possible that this could be used to generate catch-22 situations where they have to decide between nuking this or holding Claim for your Vault. Colored mana requirements aside, Arena still fills the same role though.

I suppose it's mostly the thought that this format is just one big Mistake; and not even a very sophisticated one at that.
Much like humanity itself.
