So in case no one saw my rant in the Aspartame thread, I'm broke as a joke and I take all the cheap-as-free gaming I can get.  Mugen, Armagetron, used PS2 titles like Champions of Norrath and Baldur's Gate, etc etc...  I believe the time has come for me to engage a decent online RPG, as I have terrible urges to unleash my inner Dwarf.  All I want to do is smash things with warhammers and drink beer and swear and roll my r's.  "Take THAT yae filthie suer-r-r-rat"

So how do I accomplish this without buying a WoW subscription?  I want to bash faces in real-time.  Preferably as a tank-ass Dwarf.  With a warhammer.  I'm not uber-picky, since, it'll be free (or cheap-as-free), but warhammers and Dwarves will sway my decision making process significantly.  I tried out Allods last night, and I dunno if I'm going to stick with it.  A bit glitchy, and I dunno if it ever actually saved my progress.

Dungeons and Dragons Online is free.  In a few months, Lord of the Rings online will be free.  Runes of Magic has always been free.  Each of those is pretty good.  Of course there's always the emulators out there, but I've never cared for them.  Ther three I mentioned will probably get you your fix.

Peace,

I'm going to have a run at D&DO.  While I never got into the game on paper, I've always felt the d20 system was elegant (well, post THAC0 anyway).

At a glance it seems a little geekier than I'm used to - lots of specialized feats and needing to be mindful of things like saving throws, etc... At any rate, I saw that it contained both Dwarves and warhammers (err, mauls, whatever), so I'll take a chance on it. :)

edit - omfg it is taking for-SHIT-ever to download.  85 KBps???  I have to leave my compy overnight?  Gahh
