Blue Bell Game Day #14!

    Saturday, April 9th, 2011
    Alternate Universes
    1530 DeKalb Pike
    Blue Bell, PA 19422

   Vintage Event

Start Time: 12:00 Noon (Registration @ 11:00 AM)
        Entry Fee: $30
        Format: Vintage
K-Value: Unsanctioned, 10 proxies allowed for free. You can purchase up to five more proxies at $1 each.
        REL: Competitive (like a PTQ)
Decklists will be required (and published).

The Prizes: (these prizes are based on +/- 45 players)
        1st Place: UL Mox #1!
        2nd Place: UL Mox #2!
        3rd + 4th Place: $120 in store credit
5th-8th Place: $60 in store credit

2011 Player of the Year Race:
This event will count towards the Blue Bell Game Day Player of the Year 2011.  The Player of the Year plays for free at all of the Blue Bell Game Days the following calendar year!  Players can earn points throughout the year by playing vintage, each match win is worth 3 points, each draw is worth 1 point, and each loss is worth 0 points (just like the swiss points system used in tournaments). Players in the Top 8 will be awarded bonus points based on their finish, as follows:

        1st place: 12 points
        2nd place: 9 points
        3rd + 4th place: 6 points
        5th - 8th place: 3 points

Side Events:

        Single-Elimination 8-Mans!

Start Time: As soon as 8 players sign up.
        Entry Fee: $10
        Format: Vintage
        K-Value: Unsanctioned, 15 proxies

        Prizes:
        1st Place: $60 in credit
        2nd Place: $20 in credit

Prize: dependent on how many players (100% of the entry fees will be given out as "Nick Coss bucks" aka table credit)

The Blue Bell Player of the Year contest has nothing to do with Wizards of the Coast Player of the Year contest.  Do not confuse the two.  This one is for participants in unsanctioned Vintage tournaments held at Alternate Universes in Blue Bell, PA.

You do realize that TMD OPEN 14.5 is on the same day, right?

Yeah...Nick messaged me and told me that this was the only date he had available to run an event.  I would be lying if I didn't admit that my first selfish thought was "then...wait until a free date is available".  The more I thought about it, though, is that it shouldn't at all be unreasonable for two locations 3 HOURS APART to have decent vintage events.

See, we shouldn't be striving to pull the 50 niche players to drive 2 hours one way one weekend and then 2 hours another way another weekend, then two hours a third way a third weekend, etc to play in our vintage events.  If we want to get this format back in shape, we need to build 20 player venues into 30 player ones and into 40 player ones.  A few years ago, ELD or Myriad Events were running 30 -40 people tourneys the same days that Long Island or NJ events had just as many people.

So, instead, I see this as an opportunity to refocus my goal for my event.  I want to make my event a ittle more "entry level friendly".  Something that provides reasons for some players to give Vintage a shot.  I'm not looking at holding a 35 person event where 15 come up from the NJ/Penn area.  Instead, I am going to try to take what would otherwise be a 20 person event and make it into a 35+ person shindig while Nick runs a sweet event at the same time.  This would, indeed, be a good day for Vintage.

Some ideas include:
A $5 reduced fee for players who have not played in any of my events before.
The changing of the proxy limit from 15 to 20.
The loaning of decks that are proxied or budget to players without a deck.
A campaign at local stores the next few weeks to promote vintage.

So, in retrospect, I am only saddened by one thing: that I won't be able to see friends like Nick, Ralph, the ever-drunk James Hangley, etc. this April 9th

But, I guess the idea is, if the events go well, it will spurn more opportunities to see them in the future.

RIP Mogg Fanatic...at least you are still better than Fire Bowman!!!

I was once asked on MWS, what the highest I ever finished at a TMD Open was.  I replied, "I've never played in a Waterbury.  I was then called "A TOTAL NOOB!"

I'll be there.  I've been working on a deck that makes Terrible Stax seem like Wonderful Stax.  It should prove interesting.

Remember guys, please get there early and sign up.  These tournaments have been starting late recently, and it creates problems.  We'll be starting promptly at noon, with latecomers subject to a round 1 loss.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to fun someone to run my dealer table at the NJ PTQ today. As such, Mike Coyle agreed to work on his day off and run the tournament in my absence. I'm sure he'll do a great job, and don't worry, I'll be back on May 14th with two events on the same day!  Good luck to all of the attendees.
