Maybe.  Although I'm not really excited about having to spend money on a bunch of staples I don't have that are expensive all of a sudden.  I will probably wait until the format and the B&R list settle in a little bit.

i had to pick up 2x steamvents and some fetch lands i planned on aquireing eventually anyways. which i was ok with (mostly becuase i tend to play a steam vent or 2 in my home brews).
but i did take a beating on 4x grove of burning willow.
However, I do find the ability to play 4x gifts ungiven VERY apealing. I've always really liked playing the card.

Heya,

I've been picking up staples for Modern since '09.  I'm definately going to be playing it.  Pro Tour Philly will give us a good idea of the best decks right off the bat.  But I highly expect changes to the Banned list following September 20.  So, Modern is going to be wide open for a good while.  It's really exciting I think.

I might play if people will let me use real duals as proxies for the shocklands (which I am definitely not going to pick up beyond the singleton set I already have for EDH until they are reprinted and the price goes way down).  Wink

Of course, that assumes I can find an amusing deck to play. I was actually trying to brainstorm some deck ideas for Modern last week, but every time I came up with something it turned out that it probably needed some card or two that wasn't legal to work (either too old or banned), so I just gave up. I guess I'm familiar not enough with the newer cards to actually brew for the format, so I'll probably just wait until there is some established combo deck that I enjoy before diving in. Then they'll probably ban it.

In reality, I might play modern if there are actually people in my area that pick up the format also. It looks a little too creature oriented for my tastes, as I'm used to Vintage decks and non-aggro legacy decks.

I am mostly because its going to be similar to legacy once it settles and I have all of the cards for it since I picked them up from old extended seasons.

I have done a little bit of testing and the format seems like it is going to be Naya Zoo and things geared to beat Naya Zoo.

Nope.

I got into magic through Legacy ages ago…got out…got back in…got out again…trying to get back in.  I played Standard for exactly one season and didn't flip my cards fast enough before the bottom dropped out and my deck was worth 10% of it's original (not peak) value.  Never sleeved up an extended deck once.  If I spend money any time soon, it'll be for finishing playsets, duals, and power if I can find more than the occasional T1 tournament.

IMHO, Modern is just bad Legacy that's meant to be more affordable for people getting into it.  For me, the entire attraction to Legacy is getting to play with updates to the types of things I was playing in middle school (mostly decks with Force of Will, Hymn to Tourach, and/or duals) and the attraction to Vintage is finally being able to play with the cards I never could afford in middle school (though I really wish I'd bought into power when moxes were $120).

Modern fills none of those requirements.
