This is about one hour closer than my drive to Westmont, and a $25 side event for a Mox seems very reasonable. I hope I can make this the first of the five Vintage events in the month of June that I'll be attending.

Hooray! I was worried that I would have to go three weeks without a vintage tournament.

Your noon start, is that Reg or the event? Are we doing a full on deck registration process or just flying by the seat of our pants?

To be fair your side events don't always require deck lists.

deck list will be written in crayon all my proxies will be poorly drawn images of what I believe the card should look like. Confirm me as being there and sign me up for a spot in the finals.

Top 4 Chopped. Rob Edwards beat me in the finals. I got to eat some crow as Forgemaster did its thing on my face. Rob did have some nutty hands and was always 1 sphere/turn ahead of me.

Top 4 chop = LameSauce...not too many players have balls nowadays to play things out with anything on the line.

Or a lot of players understand things like odds and implied odds, and want to maximize EV.

That must be it I can sometimes understand a finals split (even though I don't do that), but top 4 splits are lame. Unless there is a family emergency or something more pressing that someone has to leave right away I think top 4 splits are lame. Maybe I am in the minority on this topic, but to me that looks like nobody is confident enough to win the darn thing!

The way the split worked out yesterday, the only way to do better than the split was to win. It was definitely the right call as far as EV was concerned. As far as confidence, there is so much variance in this format and the power of being on the play is so large, that the only person who could be confident is the highest seed still standing. Even then, it is easy to get hit with a mulligan bug or to draw poorly. Splitting happens all the time on the PT and at GP's, it's just not covered because it's all done off camera/screen. Splitting isn't inherently due to a lack of confidence.

I totally agree with Tom here, which is one of the reasons I split.
Mr. Coss was nice enough to put all of the money taken in back into prize support (even though we only got 22 players to answer Chris' question). However, with only 22 people at $25 a piece, 2nd through 4th were less than the proposed split I believe. You don't need to fully understand the mathematical implications of expected value to know splitting was the right call (I certainly don't like math). In addition to that, I was paired against Shawn in top 4. Under no circumstances would I want to play it out to dream crush a good friend and teammate. Then in the finals in this scenario, since I expected Tom to win his semifinal match, I would have no reason to want to dream crush him either. At that point, Tom and I would have split in the finals anyway.
Yes, I was the top seed, higher seed was on the play throughout the top 8, and I was on a Workshop deck. Besides those facts, I was confident that I would win if we played it out. I beat Dave in Swiss, I beat Landstill twice that day, and I felt like my Shop build was superior to Shawn's monstrosity. Confidence had nothing to do with me wanting to split. If you don't have confidence to win, why play competitive Vintage at all? I play for fun and because I'm confident in my abilities.
EDIT: Mad props to Raf for the awesome deck list. I used his 75 from the last Grudge Match.

No split breakdown: Ruby to 1st, 100 credit to 2nd, 40 credit to 3rd and 4th.
Split was 125 to all.
In order to do better than the split, you'd have to win both rounds. Even the best players lose on occasion, and Rob and Shawn are both pretty darn good. Even if I was confident that I would take down my semi-finals, I'd have to play one of them in the end. Even if I had been on the play as should have been the case if there wasn't botched pairings in round 5 because of mixed up results from round 4, I still would have taken the split. The last thing anyone can say about me is that I lack confidence in myself.

Well being close friends and splitting makes sense. In all other cases I suppose I am the minority here. Congrats to the top anyhow!
